I look back to my times on PMC last year, and they were good times. Times were a majority of the projects, skins and other submissions were top quality. Times when chat was a fun place to be. Times when there were genuinely interesting topics on the forums. Alas how times have changed.

It seems like almost every day now that a high profile member leaves PMC. And you know what, I don't blame them. PMC has sunk into a sorry state. And thato s what this blog is about. You see I was one of the people who left too, and then the other day i thought to myself, "No, why should I stand by as one of my favourite websites sinks into a pit of ruin" So here I am, Io m back, to try and save PMC. Maybe I alone cannot do a thing. Maybe Io m just peeing against the wind here, but hell, at least I can say I tried. And Io m not alone. I write to you today representing a group of small, but high profile members who want to save PMC, who want the glory days of PMC back. When there wasn't an argument in chat every 5 minutes, when the submissions weren't overflowed with junk, when the community felt more whole. And most importantly of all, a time when the site was a fun place to be.

One of the major problems (at least what we see as a problem) is the chat. Chat used to be a fun place to hang about, have a chat, and just generally have a laugh. No more. A quick excursion into chat nowadays shows people having secluded conversations, icon spam, people advertising servers, people advertising over and over again, arguments breaking out everywhere, and mod suckups. These are some of the worst characters in chat. Kissing mods ass, desperately attention seeking. And you know what the worst part is; the mods give it to them. Not all of them, Io ll admit, but quite a few do. And they end up getting power and influence, lording it over other members that they are more important, which is far from the truth. But one of, if not, the worst part of chat is when mods abuse their power. Several mods (no names) i know to have abused their power. And before you accuse me of having a baseless claim, i have evidence. The problem with mods abusing their power is that when someone mentions it, the mod threatens that person with a ban, and when asked why, the mods use the excuse of Rule 0: The moderators ruling is final. This gives the mods breathing space to abuse their power and get away with it. I've heard of this happening several times, and people shouldn't stand for it. What is the point of instating mods if they just abuse their power. Isnt one of the points of being a mod to set an example for others. Yeah, great example, swear, abuse, and just generally break the rules, and then get away scot free.

This leads me nicely onto my next topic, the general lack of mods and chat mods. Some members feel forced into basically modding the chat themselves, to prevent arguments from breaking out left right and centre. This is not how it should be. Rumours have circulated for a long time about new chat mods being added, yet no new ones ever seem to be added. There are 3 chat mods that I know of. With the exception of Draco Dragon, I have only seen the other 2 twice apiece. I know that forum and site mods can also moderate the chat, but they also have the duty of safeguarding the forums and checking reports. I can see no good reason as to why there are no new mods, so why haven't we got them?

The last part of the rant is on the forums. A random look in the most recent posts on the forum used to show all sorts of interesting topics. Serious questions, general but fun discussion, people seriously discussing stuff. Nowadays 9 times out of 10 it will show over half of the top 20 being server staff applications, the rest being rp threads, faction applications, and other boring topics. Occasionally a gem of a topic will pop up that will genuinely interest me, but only rarely, maybe only once every few days. When did the forums get so boring? There seems to be a genuine lack of intelligent conversation nowadays, the forums used to be my favourite part of the site, now i find it drab and boring. Well, anyway, thats my rant over, i know that people will probably pass this by and not care, but hopefully a few people will actually care enough to pay attention

-Rage

On a final note, i know that im almost certainly gonna get flamed. Any inflammatory comments WILL be deleted without warning, regardless of status.

Ok, well for some reason it looks like half of my comments are gone, and its gonna take ages to redo them, so ill assure you all ive taken all your points in. :)

(Apart from the one troll comment, just an FYI to the person who wrote that, if i do a blog about the sliding standards of PMC's community, telling me to shut up and get off the site probably isnt the best way to prove me wrong.)

Saw this post when it came out, made me laugh. Just saw it again, still makes me laugh :D you legend
I am relativity new to PMC, but I can tell it used to be better. The loads of crappy skins I see whenever I look at them infuriates me. Half the time, these shitty skins then get on the feed. Minecraft has a younger playerbase than most other games, but still. I see things like this:
http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/honeydew-in-heaven/

That's not even a project. Oh wait! Isn't that the stolen Honeydew skin you referred to in another one of rants?!? This was obviously made by a child that doesn't know what they're doing. Things like THAT are the reason the site has spiraled downward.

I'm forced to moderate the chat room to stop complete anarchy from breaking out half of the time when I'm actually in there because there are either no mods, or they are AFK.

I agree, I mostly go on chat now to make sure nobody fights, I hate fighting, and I hate people that cause fights.

I'll not stand by and let pmc sink into a hole of 8 year old skinners, bloggers, and modders!
(I don't have a problem with young kids, just the fact they post crap...MOST of the time, there are a few good ones.)

PMC will never go down, members like us will not let it! The chunk of the community responsible for much of the trash and spam will disappear soon enough, but we have to come together to make that happen.

As a long serving member of the PMC community I agree. I used to post things on PMC without the worry of being spammed with comments arguing with me when I had not actually said anything. I miss when moderators would listen. I have a server and someone stole the IP and re posted it rendering me unable to update my server post. It has been about 3 weeks now of constant messaging and flagging but this duplicate is still up and taunting me. Keep p the blogs. Glad to see someone recognizes these issues with PMC.

You can just look at the date they were posted. His facts are all wrong. His post still says the server is Bukkit when it is tekkit. This is causing me great anger because the site has yet to take it down. People get confused and it is messing up the server. I need it taken down now.

I think Zaphod is trying to point something out to you.
I understand that but why should I be forced to prove something when it is obviously true. Its like saying whats 2+2 and me saying 4 but getting asked but how do you know. How do we know your not lying.

Your example is terrible, since it is already defined that the value of '2' is '2' less than the value of '4'. It is indisputable that 2 + 2 is in fact 4. Here's an example that will illustrate why you should listen to Zaphod:

A person has committed suicide. You are an investigator that doubts this theory due to various clues against it. The only thing going for the suicide theory is the electrician's testimony talking about how the man seemed depressed and ready to give up. However, you do know that the man's friends found him happy, and in fact, the man was partying at midnight, with no reason to die.

Should we trust the electrician, or should we need further proof?

Should we trust you as the owner, or should we need further proof?
There was plenty of proof. That is why I said that.

I always hear about things about the "older members" saying how great PMC was. I wouldnt have a clue how great it was because i have only been here for just 4 months. I love this site though i find it better than facebook. I always enjoy being in chat, anything can happen. Sure we get people who spam and flame others but if there is a mod on it quickly gets dealt with. Now a moderator isnt always on in chat and those are times when the worst in some people come out. We are basically forced to "mini moderate" to try to keep some respect and put people in line. If we had more moderators then less problems would occur. I love this site but i feel that if people who make this site better or friendlier leave due to them not liking the community then this place could eventually go down into the dumps. This place could go into change. The exp system could be changed. I know `that a small amount of this community wish that the exp system was removed but that will cause more problems than solve. If we get a new and way better exp system then this place could be improved and stop spammers and also the lower level people wont get "hate" for simply being a low level.

Some info:
The recent event in chat has been dealt with. Any further abuses, and you should PM a site mod with proof and we will deal with it. I take that sort of thing very seriously.

The forums I find bounce between pointless junk and interesting stuff. How to keep it more interesting? I don't really know how. Any suggestions?

There will be some more moderators promoted soon(ish).

There will be a new system to reduce LQ and stolen submissions implemented soon(ish).

Ahh, keep it really simple and only have a couple broad areas to reduce posting in the wrong place?

Would be good, but that might make everything disappear in the first page of the forums like MCF. Maybe that isn't what you meant >.<

Now I'm sad. Rps aren't boring D:

All joking aside, you are right and wrong. The only way to make this site truly wonderful again, would be to make it un-popular again. Then no trolls would come. That is an impossible task. If we have more mods it won't help. Sure, maybe the forums would be a little better and chat would have spam cleaned up quicker but over all you'd still get the same annoying &^*#. I holed myself up in Rp land because then all the trolls can only make apps. I can read most of the posts. Most people are friendly. Sadly of course Rps have started to follow in PMC's tracks. They are going down hill as well. But, there's nothing we can do about it. We can't ban them for bad grammar. And that's the truth. There is no redemption for this site. All we can do is try to have as much fun as we can.

I have to agree with black on this one. PMC is community based, take out everything you want taken out, and it destroys the nature of the website. You can't help that kids, or *Asskissers* (don't think I don't know) are on a popular website, times change, and things change with it. I'm sure if Cyprezz wanted it another way, he would make it so, but he has it like it is, because thats what he thinks is best for the community. And rule 0 is a perfectly good excuse, also, the lack of mods may be because there are no other #good# alternatives, If someone deserved mod and there was need for them, they would get it.

I agree, and I think the sheer number of rant blogs, and the sheer number of rant blogs that make pop reel, is testimony of the state of PMC. I've posted my own - different angle from yours, mine is about texture packs rather than chat/forums - but it's the same deal. People ruining the experience for others. Something needs to change.

Yeah, I really miss the old times too. I assume that the reason for the more common flames and such now a days is because PMC has grown a whole lot this past year. I believe that PMC didn't nearly have as much members about a year ago. Anyways, I agree with your whole blog. The forums today are spammed with all of these mod apps and such. I rarely ever go on there now. I now spend most of the time on chat, fighting back trolls. That was a nice blog though. :)

You may say that PMC is broken, ruined or defunct. But I disagree, I think PMC is fine: it's by far the most adaquete minecraft community website. And compared to other communicative media sites like facebook...PMC is utopia compared to them.

If you don't like the topics on the forums, if they bore you; well, that's your problem; some else might find them interesting or it might help them.

I admit, PMC has become very commercialised in a sense. But that happens with everything over time when there's a product involved; and in this case, it's project uploads. But you can't blame users for advertising their projects.

I think people just have to learn to deal with it. You have to remember that this site is made of and run by REAL PEOPLE; and that means it is not going to be perfect.

If you don't like it, then leave.

I honestly think making more mods, who are truly good nice people, would be good. Think about it, the mods always say the amount of work they have and they can't do it all. If there were 150 moderators the site would be incredibly better, we just have to make sure they are all good people.
