The emptiness of the void sent shivers through Jay's body every time he looked at it. The nebula, a storm in the darkness, the stars, torches in the sky. The perfect combination of beauty and danger, it could both scare him and excite simultaneously.
Snap out of it, he promptly snapped back into action. I can't drift off every time this damned thing needs a circuit replaced. He clutched a handle attached to the vessel through his leathery white gloves. It surprised him that such a simple concept was all that kept him from drifting into the void, that and the cable he had around his waist.
"All done? We need to get a move on if we don't want to resort to cannibalism". Jackson, Jay's commanding officer, was really only in space because his parents had pushed him towards success.
"Yeah, all clear. Can you have Beth heat somethin' up for me; I really need some grub after this."
"Sure, whatever, I'll see to it."
Jay grasped his tool-belt with one hand with careful precision, as to avoid puncturing his glove with one of the wire splitters. Nice and easy he screwed in the last bolt covering the external transmission relay. They had been in radio silence for nearly 6 hours, and it had been 2 hours since they realized the problem was mechanical. This unauthorized space walk was sure to piss off Houston.
The absence of the "clank" Jay remembered every time he took another step down the ladder disturbed him. In fact, this whole lack of external noise disturbed him. His own heavy breathing only frightened him, and he could here the sound of his rehyderated dinner digesting in his stomach.
He stepped in the external dock, relieved to have some sort of light besides that of the sun.Damn that's bright, was the first thing that Jay could remember from his first space voyage. This trip wasn't going to be sper exciting, just a moon walk, placing some equipment for some physicists, and of course playing around on the moon-buggy.

"Welcome back. Piss yourself this time?" Jay didn't hate Beth, but she could get on his nerves.
"One time, that was one time. When are you going to drop that?"
The same time I forget to lock my helmet to my suit. Here's some turkey, or whats left of it anyways." She handed Jay a platter of what looked like mashed potatoes and smelled like old mayonnaise. "Bon Apetite".
