Hello Fellow Members of PMC! :)
Now, this topic has disturbed me for quite some time now, and seriously needs to be discussed. I am not going to be mentioning any servers that do this, as that would be severely rude of me. But if you do this on your server, please - don't. It will just completely ruin your server.
If you having some trouble figuring out what message I am trying to get across, then I recommend you read on.

Seriously? Donating To Become a Staff Member?

Okay, so recently on servers, I have looked at the store, just to see the perks, and prices of different donor ranks. Every now and then, I happen to stumble across a server, that allows you to become a STAFF MEMBER by donating. Just, no. Are you kidding me?
You know what is even worse? Mainly it is like 100 dollars.
You are probably thinking to your self - "100 dollars to become staff, seems fair to me."

Staff members are given OP. So that means that this donator can do what ever in the world he pleases. Whether it be "stopping the server, blowing up spawn, taking stuff from others chests even if its private." The list would go on for days, and they get the access to do ALL THAT by paying money?

The reason people make staff a donor rank, is so that people will want to buy it. Mainly putting it up for a lot of money, people will be intrigued to buy which, which means that the owner, is blowing up in cash.
But is that in all a good decision?
Well, now that they have given you 100 bucks and have the capability of doing anything they please, your server is screwed. They aren't gonna pay you that much many to be supportive (well, some may), people pay that much money to muck around on a popular server.
On those servers, I have never came across a good staff. All of them just mucking around, swearing and not helping whatsoever.
It is very kind of those people to pay you that much money, but don't give them OP for it! Perhaps give them many perks, and basically all commands, just not the ones that will ruin the server. So think twice before setting up donations for staff.

Selecting PROPER Staff Members:

On my server, staff is earned. Whether it is my best friend or not. Some of my closest friends don't even have a rank yet. I believe that staff should be earned, not demanded, or payed for.
These are the signs that a person deserves a staff rank:

-Kind and Respectful: They don't act like total morons, and actually are really nice, and are respectful to the server.
-Activity: They will be on A LOT. Most of there time. This means that they really enjoy the server.
-Positive Comments: They will never hate on the server, and mainly discuss the good things about it, and at times will give constructive criticism.
-Help Others: They will help and guide new joined players, or anyone in general. This means they want to be supportive.
-Welcome Others: Every time someone joins, they will give them a warm welcome, or a warm welcome back if they had previously joined the server.

So if someone hold many of these traits, I recommend you examine them for a bit, then consider whether or not they make a good staff member.

In conclusion, I believe that paying for staff is just the wrong thing to do, and isn't the way to go. Staff should be earned, and should be legitimate staff members. If people can donate for servers, they can do whatever they please, so find proper staff members. Not just the ones who donated.

MY GOD! I FINALLY FOUND ONE BLOG ABOUT THIS! I completely DESPISE the fact that you have to pay the amount of 5 widescreen televisions just to obtain more "cool" stuff on servers! There was one HORRID server which had a Cops and Robbers minigame, but you had to pay SO MUCH just to be a warden. It's NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE to get past them because they had diamond armor and a sword that can catch you on fire. You have to be a robber FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE ON THAT SERVER until you donated like $200 dollars to that AWFUL sever.

Man! How many blogs do you have that I agree with?! I've always HATED the fact that on most servers you have to pay to get a rank! I mean $100?! That's just... no. I have as well mostly thought about the fact that they can get these special commands and more advantages to the server. What if it's a griefer?! It's like what happened to ZexyZek on his server. Now I don't know if you know about him or not, but he's just one of the minecraft YouTubers that plays minecraft. His server got screwed up by a little kid that persuaded his parents to donate $100 to the server for a rank to destroy it.
Also, although I am a very big fan of deadlox, I personally don't like his server. I don't even know if he takes donations, I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF THIS IS EVEN IN THE TOPIC!
i have to stop doing stuff like that..
I've got to say, you are quite a person!
Again, for about the 3rd time, I really enjoy your stuff! You're probably now one of my favorite planet minecrafters!
Keep up the wonderful work!

People who donate are more able to become staff, though, as donating says you are committed to the server, etc.

But paying for staff is just wrong.

I agree, however one server I came upon (one of the first servers I went on) have staff donor ranks, but the staff were actually pretty nice over all, but then again I have seen many servers with staff ranks that can be purchased, and they are terrible.

Another pet peeve I'm sure isn't as common, is that I've seen people get staff ranks for just building something good. This guy I once knew made a giant house that was legit, and the owner just hands him over the first staff rank. Fast forward about a month later, he's now an owner of the server, just for the build.

I've seen this server, "Pay $100 for OP!" I use a hacked paypal to pay and it says "lol, you paid for nothing!" Good thing I didn't really pay.

Anyway, nice blog

Man that owner is terrible!!!!!! So if you didnt have the hacked paypal there goes $100 down the drain. what an utter and total scam

I've seen servers that allow you to apply if you donate (mainly the Minecade servers). This seems like an interesting idea, as it allows to see if people are worthy, while showing if someone is happy enough to pay. It creates this idea that you cannot just apply, but you don't have to donate to become staff, but an interesting inbetween... :)

Servers like this are only wanting money, they don't care about you the player. Don't play them.

i would never pay to get any perks unless the server is trusted and well-known. if i pay 20 dollars for a donator rank, the server could suddenly "shut down" and the owner gets away with the money.

Level 55 : Grandmaster Architect
If they were a good owner, they would restrict privileges such as server shutdown and other commands that make gameplay for others unfair.
This is a great way to make money.
But I don't support it.
I guess donators see this rank as a gamemode 1 and /give and uber rank, but then again, the owner could just implement a donor rank similar to this idea.

I think the only reason why people usually let people donate for staff is so they GET donations in an easier way, which to me seems Wrong....

I never had pay for staff, or OP, but i did have pay £15 for... Almost every command in the game. And it ruined the server a lot.
Yes, i have fixed that now, but im just saying it was a big problem.

I agree there isn't really a point in donation on servers to get only to a tiny amount of nothing and most of the people on the server don't have money to waste on something like that any money I get is not going to their Paypal account it will most likely go to something on steam or Mass Effect DLC(that's what I do with MY money)

Wow dude,

This is a great topic, when i play tf2 lots of groups are like "PAY 1 KEY TO GET MODERATOR" and im like, well that must be a great group, where they sell staff...

VIP should cost, but not moderator or admin or whatever rank!

The server I used to administrate:

-You needed to be in the server for at least 3 months so the rest of the staff can see who and how you interact with people along with your behavior.

-You can apply for moderator after that time but said application may not be approved even with the best sentences in the world.

-While Helper, you are a regular player who wants to help but don't want to have privileges. This rank is for those who are familiar with all the rules and how the server is runed and they can be chosen by a staff member to help around if new members struggle with something.

-While Moderator you can change game modes and only use creative for moderating. Want to play? Play in survival like everyone else. You have access to basic commands to keep the server under control and server log access.

-While Administrator, you get OP and can control the server through CP however you do not have permission for all commands.

-Owner, owns the place. The Boss basically.

-Donations were only from 5$ to 20$ to cover server costs and people were never forced to donate. They did it because they wanted to.

I agree with you 90%. Your right but some popular servers make you buy a rank before you become staff, this is a good reason because you paid and it's like saying, "Oh I bought this rank to be staff. I won't mess up or else it would have been a waste of money"

Most servers don't necessarily offer staff, more a V.I.P rank.

And the only reason they do this is because usually some servers just don't get donations, and everyone buys off hosts for servers now-a-days... So to get donations faster...

i think you should be able to donate but not for OP but the ranks are quite cheap i mean i was once on a server and just to get god mode was $10.00

A staff-selling server is a server that will soon fail, just like the first server I joined. It had over 200 people online on top days (it was towny) and it died completely. Good blog.

My old server:
$10 = Moderator
$15 = Administrator
$30 = Co-Owner

I went on a server once and looked at the donor perks.
$1 - Donator
$100 - Swag
$500 - Admin
And I'm like, wtf?!

This is the world we live in deal with it. Servers are hosted by a provider, they receive money so they are 100% fine with what you do on "your" server. The actual server donations are brought to the user though the website and is linked with someones bank account, paypal mostly. So the point here is that it is not wrong, it is a way for the server to make money back and keep their server running. If you don't agree then thats on you. Me personally I would not offer up owner positions for money. I would just offer a position for staff. Good blog though, keep up the hard work,

This is very simple, and what many servers do. They have a staff donation for a high amount. But they do backups. Someone buys "staff" and destroys the server? No problem! Back up is restored within 1-2 hours. Very simple, it is easy cash. Thats why people do it. Manual and system automated backups. Not backups that can be stopped/destroyed in game.
01/13/2014 10:25 pm
Level 18 : Journeyman Unicorn
its not simple... you cant "Backup" lost players that have been affected by a abusive staff member. No matter how hard you try.. some of them just wont come back.

It is not just the grief they cause, they can also treat default members poorly.

It's money for a server, they're not going to care how they treat members.

Exactly to a certain extent. It depends on the type of person that is running the server and the staff he chooses. I know many people who simply run a server to make a few extra bucks. But some people including myself actually enjoy it and do it for fun. With the people that do it for fun there is less likly chance of bad staff. With someone who just is doing it to make money, there not going to care about the users. They will treat the like dirt.
01/15/2014 6:08 am
Level 5 : Apprentice Artist
Depends on the people who are behind it really.

Talking for myself, in the server I used to administrate I did care about the members who visited the server to the point friendships were made along the almost two years I was there.

Our staff was not made of kids either so we always tried to know the age of each player so we know the best way to talk with them too. Mutual respect and understanding in a community is vital for it to grow and continue running.

Great point, people who have never hosted a server themselves have no idea about this stuff. It's. all. about. money.

Sometimes there are servers that will sell staff but not giving them all the commands to ruin the server. This is for the people who cannot get staff on a decent server even if they show those traits (I am one of them). I do believe it is retarded to give full on OP just for 100$, but I also think that you are hating too much on the ones who actually know what they are doing by selling staff. I for one would rather earn staff, and I am able to show those traits, but no one ever notices me on decent servers, and I never get to have the experience of being staff on a good server.

They're paying for the server, so you don't have to. Just be grateful you can play on it for free, when the owners are spending their money to host it, and people are donating to keep it running.
