Hey guys.
I join many vanilla servers, and when I view the online players, all they have is white names. How can we tell who is staff and who's not? Who is the owner?
It can cause confusion amongst players, so thats why I am giving you a tutorial on how to set up ranks on your vanilla server using the scoreboard system!
Note: This may seem a complicated, but when you get the hang of it, it is so easy and very helpful!
Let's get started!
Before you get started on actually setting up the ranks, you are going to need to know what ranks you are going to have set up, what colour each rank is going to represented as, and which players are going to be in the rank.
Here I will list some recommended ranks:
Owner (Very obvious)
Admin
Moderator
VIP
Member
Okay, now lets figure out which colour goes with each rank. Make sure no two ranks have the same colour, as it may cause confusion. So just a precaution. For owner, I always love the look of dark red, and red for admin. Purple suits moderator, and either blue or green suits VIP. I also think member should be yellow.
Remember, it's completely up to you! I am just giving my opinion.
Now we need to figure out who goes in which group. Just write down a short list on a notepad listing the staff members, and their groups.
Okay, now lets get making the groups!
First thing you need to do before ANYTHING, is simply, make the groups, using this command:
/scoreboard teams add (group name)
After making all the groups, you need to add the players to the group via this command:
/scoreboard teams join (group name) (player name)
It may take some time to add all the players to their separate groups, but hopefully you have not that many staff and VIP's.
Now, you still have a white name....
Probably because we need to...
Set the groups colours!
This is done via this command:
/scoreboard teams option (group name) color (color).
Here is a list of all the colours:
black, dark_blue, dark_aqua, dark_red, dark_purple, gold, gray, dark_gray, blue, green, aqua, red,
light_purple, yellow, white
Set it to any colour you like :D
remember, they have to be spelt and written in that exact format, but don't worry, if you muck it up it will give you a list.
People may not know which colour represents, so it is recommended at spawn you have a message board explaining the rank colours, and the staff players.
Thank you for reading, as you may now set up a rank system on a vanilla server, or singleplayer...?
If I missed out on anything, or need help, PLEASE post a comment. After hosting a vanilla server for a few months, I basically know how to do anything in vanilla!
Including shops! I may post that next if my friend doesn't beat me to it >.< (animate555, my server co-owner/developer)

Any tips?
I do this for the colors:
"/scoreboard teams option Owner color yellow"
And in response i get this:
"Set option color for team Owner to yellow"
Then I talk, (i am part of the team) and i talk in plain white???
I tried again and the same thing happens.

Administrator: Light Red - Would show up as [A]playername
Moderator: Cyan - Would show up as [Mod]playername
Helper: Dark Green - Would show up as [H]playername
Sponsor: Yellow - Would show up as [S]playername
Resident: Gray - Would show up as [R)playername
Guest: White - Would show up as [G]playername
Since we were a small staff team, that was really well picked by it's server owner, he himself had set it up brilliantly and the server was pretty much self-sustainable, with a huge panoply of plugins that could pretty much take care of everything for us. We also never had big problems to take care of besides drama between players.
Cheaters kept being caught, thanks to the tools we had to catch them. Our plugins gave us a record of basically every move they've made from the day they got in till the last. Most of the cheaters were caught in the act of cheat thanks to our tools as well.
I'm really proud of the "house" I administrated and I miss it terribly. Sadly the Owner decided it was time to shut it down after almost 3 years of being up.
