Should Art Have it's Own Section?

Okay, so yes, I am going to make a suggestion about a new section that PMC should implement.  Many users here like to upload "Art Blogs", and I think that PMC should create an Art section to fully implement and embrace this art.

Why Can't They Just be Blogs?

The very first thing that many of you are going to say is "Why can't they remain in the blog section?"  Well it's simple: the blog section doesn't take full advantage of the artistic works, and can be a huge loophole for reulebreaking and quality lacking scribble.

Before I get into those, I want to talk about the quantity of the current "Art Blog".  I say about 35-50% of all blogs on the "What's Hot"/Pop Reel are artistic style blogs.  This doesn't awfully bother me, but it does mean that they hog the space for some of the quality written blogs.

Also, another thing about an Art Section is that images can be uploaded individually, instead of being forced into a single blog (as stated by the rules).  Users can receive credit and diamonds for individual images instead of one whole blog.

Another thing I mentioned earlier was the "loophole" for unquality and forbidden works.  Lots of Art Blogs do not contain many MC related arts, which strictly speaking, risk being removed.  If we have an art section, this art can be closely monitered, being removed as wished.  Also, diamonds and favourites can be given to individual works so that the necessary credit is awarded.  Any unrelated arts can be posted in the forums.

So What's in for the Art Section?

There are many things that will be implemented into the art section.  Things could include editors, montages, stories etc.

I will start with the Art Editor.  Maybe Paril can incorporate a basic drawing program that allows users to draw things on the spot for upload.  It will contain all the necessary colours, brushes etc.  Of course, users can upload files from their computer for the Art Section.

Montages are basically going to be collections consisting only of Artwork.  If this happens, you can download the art and view slideshows of them, and make them your desktop background.  Mainly this isn't a suggestion but maybe something the admin can do with the collections.

Last thing I will talk about today is the stories.  A lot of characters drawn contain there stories.  These can be put in the description but also can be shown alongside the art shall it make it onto the pop reel.  This will allow for more insight and creativity with the creative works.

Tell me what you think of the Art section.  Anything you want to suggest?  Any loopholes that the section will create?

I've always thought PMC should expand to other games and areas. They could buy a domain like gameplanet.com had have minecraft.gameplanet.com cod.gameplanet.com xbox.gameplanet.com ect...

I think this is something that could be done... but in no way should it be a priority, pmc is for minecraft, and art not related to it is something that should be considered a bonus.

I would just like to put my opinion across;

Firstly, there is the problem with the thousends of art blogs posted in the past. Will they be moved, how will they be moved and will people report them for being in the wrong section? This is also major work for the developers of the site. They will have to create an entire new system for the art area and create new rules, limits and hire new moderators.

Secondaly, blogs have had their rules slowly stripped away to create new oppertunitys. Because, of course, you can only write so much about minecraft before you want to shoot your self. This is why the blog section if often used as the 'Other' section to bring in new Ideas and keep planetminecraft fresh.

Lastly, PMC is still relatively new. They have work to do and as minecraft grows it needs to aswell. When you think about it minecraft is only in 1.8. This means there are thousends of updates to come. Also I feel that this is not on the top of the developers list of to-dos. They are still working on the responsive update and they are about to release the new profile update. Lets not even start on the new forums update they are working on.

Obviously this blog will make no effect on wether they will be an art section any time soon. As much as I like the idea of an art section and this blog it just wont happen.

Good points, but I don't think PMC will need to shift all Art Blogs to the new section though.  It is logical as though they haven't removed all previous rants and pixel arts.

I like the idea, mainly beacuse art uploads won`t be mixed together with good blogs.

I think that this is an amazing idea and I hope someone on staff sees this!

We are seeing an massive increase on artwork on PMC that are creative and impressive. We need to be able to give this work the attention that it deserves instead of muddling it in the blog section.

I agree, cause a blog is like a diary you share with other people. But where does the art part come in? I think this "Art blog" thing is just a solution not to create a new selection for the art. But I think an Art selection would be really great, and it would clean up the blog selection a bit

"Too many Art Blogs on the pop reel, so let's give them their own section" sounds like "too many teen skins on the pop reel, so let's give them their own section". I don't think that there are enough Art Blogs to need their own section and our community determines what gets on the Pop Reel.

Art blogs, or any other blog, are also not required to contain any content related to MC, so the statement you made about that is very inaccurate. Regarding Art Blogs only showcasing one image, report it and we'll remove it.

Not really, teen skins are still skins, while art blogs tend to rely on drawn elements than written ones.
I don't know whether I'd give them a new section, but I'd say they are pretty different to most blogs.

But wait, better solution, blogs are already organised into sub categories.... Why not retool the pop reel to pick a certain number of blogs from each sub category rather than just take a lump from the section as a whole? Or am I just spurting heresy here.

Then you would run into a problem similar to affirmative action.

You are a college and you can enroll 2 new students. There are 3 candidates. Candidates A and B are both white males with above average test scores who took extra curricular classes in order to be accepted. Candidate C is a Hispanic female with average test scores and who took no extra classes. You choose the highest scoring white male and Candidate C to be accepted to enroll because you want diversity rather than the most qualified students.

That's exactly how the pop reel works now. Only takes certain numbers of each submission type. And this sort of thing is already an issue.

For the home page pop reel, yes. Those submissions are the most popular of each major submission section. Doing that on the home page makes more sense to me than doing the same for submission subsections when viewing pop reels specific to a single submission section. The home page pop reel showcasing the most popular of each submission section regularly features high-quality and popular pieces, where limiting single-section reels to one or two items from each subcatagory has a higher chance of featuring sub-par content rather than only pulling the most popular blogs for that reel.

Personally I think there should be a vote up system that is hidden from all members. The content with the most votes in the last hour are displayed for 10 minuits, then the next popular and so on until the next hour.

Here's my problem with art blogs: the site is called Planet Minecraft for a reason. If I wanted to see someones art about something completely unrelated to Minecraft I would have gone elsewhere. (If your art blog contains minecraft related drawings I would have no problems with it)

Our rules used to reflect that same belief, however, it came to our attention as staff that our Blog section was beginning to lack fresh topics due to our "it must be Minecraft-related" rule. A lot of neat articles and stories had to be removed because of that rule and we felt it would be good for the Blogs section as a whole if we gave people a little more leeway as to what topics could be posted. Limiting Art to "Minecraft only" doesn't make sense given that we made the decision to allow topics outside of Minecraft to encourage fresh ideas.

I got you, it now makes more sense as to why you allow art blogs on the site, thanks for explaining it to me.

I agree the art blogs do take up a lot of space in this section but I fear if we remove of them, then the popular reel will just be replaced with short, unintelligent and lack luster blogs with the occasional gem.

Aahah yes I agree with you, too many art blogs taking up Pop Reel space even if the art is good or "bad"
