Hi guys and I'm here to teach you how to get the most out of your money when it comes to paying for hosting a minecraft server, or if you even require purchasing one (meaning host your own off of your own PC)

  • Firstly, do you actually need to purchase one, this is the main question. Are you hosting a server for a forum or just for you and a few friends to mess around on every so often? If it's just for you and a few mates and it won't be used all that much, I wouldn't even buy a server. If you can find a company that does free 24 hour hosting, do that (the lag may be less than if you host your own) or just host a server off of your own computer. It's easy and free and you will have complete control with no worries about anyone else affecting the core server files.
  • Secondly, nut out the good deals from the bad. You don't want to rush out there and grab a super cheap server that can have up to 100 players online, because odds are, the machine specs that is hosting the server will be sub-standard and it will probably be an unreliable server. Look for a good deal. sure, but make sure the hosts are providing the basics for what your server will need. Do they provide Bukkit or Tekkit on top of Vanilla (plain minecraft) or do they charge extra? And if they do, is the server cheaper to buy than another one which includes Bukkit or Tekkit for free? Look at the machine and internet specs, the last thing you want for a server is to have a host which boasts high-speed internet but lacks the equipment to run the server without computer lag or the opposite, has an amazing host computer but terrible internet speeds. All these factors play a crucial part in hosting an effective and fun server.
  • Third, look at any extras they might charge for, you can easily find a host that provides MySQL (Data storage database needed for log-block and other certain plugins),and server support for free. If you find a host that has an expensive rate on RAM levels for servers and then charges extra for these you may want to really weigh up if their machine is that spectacular compared to a host providing every extra free for a slightly lower rate.
  • Then, look at how much traffic your server will get. If you run a forum or want to run a server in the name of a forum (get clearance from the forum owner first) post about the server, looking for interest (not so much for staff, but who will regularly join the server making it a worthwhile investment on your part). If you find only about 20 people will consistently go online, don't buy a server that can hold 200 players, you'll be paying a hugely excessive amount for a server that's only being used by 20 players. That said, don't go and buy a server that maxes out at 20 slots, if the server is full, it will lag (I learnt this the hard way). Instead get the next option up (it will only cost a little bit more, but the server will benefit from it). This will allow the server to run at a steady rate and allow for new players to join, potentially expanding your server.
  • Once you've got the costs sorted out, look at it they provide plugins for you, or if you have to upload them yourself (Yes, it's lazy, but most hosts will provide a list of plugins they recommend for a successful server meaning you can find effective plugins that may work better than the provided ones).
  • Lastly, are you able to support the server on top of everyday expenses? If you can't, maybe look at getting a few members to help with the costs by allowing them donor ranks and extras for lessening the burden of paying for the server. Otherwise, save up enough to run the server for a couple of months without straining yourself and get a donor program sorted out.

Hopefully this helps out potential server owners when it comes to deciding whether or not to buy or self host.

A helpful link for those who got this far, to compare server hosts. Watch out as the top one may not always be top ranked, they may have paid for top spot

What host do you recommend? I currently use daddycheese for my survival server, though I am looking for some better hosting when I open a new prison server.

Well currently my host is VMLweb, they have preset amounts of RAM available for purchase (as all hosts do) however they allow extra RAM to be purchased, you just have to get in contact with them. I asked them once what their upper limit was and it was something ridiculous, I've just forgotten the exact amount.

Would you recommend them for a large (potentially 100-200 player slots) server? Also, do they have preset slots?

Honestly, it depends how much you are willing to spend, to get a 200 players slot with them would cost a little over $120 USD
By preset slots I'm assuming you mean they set the slots by how much you purchase, in that case, yes they do. They go by 20 slots per 1GB of RAM. Which seems like overkill, but once you add your plugins into that, it's actually just about right.

That's true. And the way I set up my first server was hold LAN's with friends and we'd design the map as we went and then when we were ready, I purchased the server IP and just uploaded the world then. Most hosts give capability to do so :)
