Introduction
Did you ever get that random thought in your head; like you wanted to do more with the skin, but you were bound by the "canvas?" With this in mind, it is quite a frustrating thought not getting your ideas on the skin because a skinning program will not allow it. In light of this, you are possibly asking yourself "what is this guy talking about?" Well, the question I am asking is: can skins be of greater potential, or is that potential limited?

Origin of the Idea

The idea came to me when I was thinking about skins and my blog (Mineideas--Asymmetrical Skins and Skin Shaping) and then it clicked: "what if you could add emote, walk, or cosmetic animations to a skin to make it look or act better" for example: if you wanted to give the skin the ability to show emotion, like laughter or happiness, you would be able to create the animations for that respective skin and tie it into the skin to create a animated part or parts. With this in mind, it would be the same for a walk animation (but a bit trickier): you would try to give the walk a more smoother feel and look like he/she is actually walking. Finally, the cosmetic animations, the ones you add to give it the touch it needs, the thought of cosmetic animations came to me when I was thinking about the resource packs that were in Minecraft and I got to thinking "what if you could do the same thing you did in a resource pack (animation-wise) to a skin?"

Potential for Skins

The fact that Mojang or anyone in the modding community hasn't thought of this idea, or hasn't stepped up to claim it as a project (mod-wise), is a very frustrating thought to me when I realized that skins could have so much potential for an art. Because of this, the thought infuriates me when people do not seem to realize what potential they hold, whenever they pick up a mouse (or pen, whatever you use) to create a great skin worthy of sharing.

The Limits?

The imagination for skins is limitless, as long as imagination lives, the ability to create lives. However, the potential for skins, as it stands, is limited because of its confines and because of these confines, I believe that skinning will not be respected as an art form by some people. In other words, the world of skinning needs more than its given.

Conclusion

Skinning is an art form in itself, just like building (projects), blogs, and also texture packs. However, the world of skinning has a lot of potential in itself to become an art form, but it has a lot of limits on what it can do, like it can't give you a cool light animation on your skin even if you willed it. In conclusion, in the world of skinning, I must ask this question: can we only do so much about about the quality of skins?
