How Important is Sleep?

I consider sleep is a very important balance to have in your life. You see it keeps our bodies and minds recharged. It is a graceful time to relax in your comfy bed at the end of a long day. It is often said that the needed amount of regular sleep is 7 to 8 hours. Some may have a little more or less than that. Sleep makes us feel great the next day and makes us be able to focus, paying attention and think clearly. It keeps you healthy and lowers your stress levels. Sleep affects the quality of life you have, be sure to not sleep too much or too less. Too much sleep can be bad as too little sleep, you need to find a balance. I believe adquate sleep is one key to a good life.

But sometimes we don't want to or aren't able to get the amount of sleep we need. This could be more a number of reasons.
  • Doing Work/School Work
  • Insomnia
  • Thinking too much
  • Uncomfortable bed
  • Too much Noise/Light
  • Talking/Hanging out with friends
  • It's too hot/ It's too cold
  • Have to get up early for school/work
  • Being hungry
  • Someone bothering you
  • Too much energy
  • Staying in bed too long
  • Addiction
  • and the list goes on and on.

Manage your Sleep

If you set up a schedule to sleep at a particular time each day, your body will get used to it and fall asleep much quicker. Although it can be hard to do this everyday, you should try to do it and not stay up too late. After messing up your rhythm, it can be hard to get back into. Try to make the conditions for your sleep appropriate, I know for a fact I can't sleep with light or noise, so I turn off all of the lights and close the windows and blinds. I once had a lucid dream, but there was an annoying ringing sound so I was forced to wake up to close the window which was left open, allowing for outside noise.

Make sure your schedule matches up with what time you need to wake up the next day. If you have to wake up at 5 AM ,go to bed earlier so you won't be as tired. If you have too much energy, you should be active during the day or two hours before bed, so when it's time for bed you'll fall asleep like (snap*)that. If someone is making too much noise, tell them that you are trying to sleep and they are too loud. If you are usually hungry when you are falling asleep, you should eat a little snack to satisfy you an hour or more beforehand. Whatever your problems are, you should find a way to fix it.

The only time that you shouldn't sleep is for special occasions or you MUST complete an assignment. If you are doing something unproductive and staying up late at night for no good reason, just do yourself a favor and sleep for a new day.

Survey Statistics

I took these statistics from members of Planet Minecraft from the forums or in chat a couple days ago. These are just for fun and I even did include the two entries which says they sleep for 2 hours(I'm pretty sure thats a lie, but oh well.)
undefined

It looks like most people are being healthy in their sleep, though some are sleeping in too much.

undefined
According to the survey results, most of you guys feel tired and want to go back to sleep when you wake up. This is not surprising and perhaps they do need more or less sleep to avoid this.
undefined

Slightly more than half of the people surveyed indicated that they are fine with the amount of sleep they have. Still a significant amount of people did wish they had more sleep.

I struggle with sleep, always have. Guess thats what I get with Autism. But I really do think it is important. I understand every word that you have said and hopefully, it may help a little knowing what more I have to do to control my awful sleep patterns.

I don't sleep, I only take long blinks. :P

I really don't get much sleep since I'm very busy and beginning to be used to not having much sleep which leads to me just becoming an insomniac.

Since that I'm 18 y/o, getting not enough sleep is normal to me. Normally, the reasons I don't get much sleep is busyness, crappy sleep schedule and uncomfortableness.

i'm the same age as you and you've got to get it together man. I hope whatever you do that makes your busy is worth no sleep because if it's not you are just wasting your time. Make yourself a good sleep habit and get a 100% feathered velvet quilted blanket, a nice pillow and totally silence in darkness and you will be comfortable.

hang on sleep health is variable by age in that first pie chart
e.g for teenagers 8-10 is healthy (which is the primary demographic of pmc) it's only in adulthood that 6-7 becomes the norm

Interesting random piece of trivia: those with Bipolar disorder have brains that do not regulate sleep the same way as "normal" brains do. Personally it is very easy for me to operate 2-3 days (or more) without sleep before even realizing it. However with that said it comes with a price - in spades. Even though my brain doesn't recognize the need, my body still does. Quality of sleep has been linked to heart health, blood pressure, the quality of your immune system, obesity, and cognitive function of the brain. On that last note, it's critical for those with Bipolar disorder to get good sleep to minimize episodes. Some of us require an incredibly strict sleep schedule because of this - as in even so much as one hour late to bed is enough to trigger an manic episode. *sigh* lol Don't get me wrong, there are times when excessive sleep occurs as well, but I don't personally experience it that often. Anyway sorry for the wall of text. I just found your blog interesting since my son and I recently covered the topic for our health subject last quarter.

When you say Bipolar Disorder most people think "mood swings" when in reality it's more complex than that. Mood dysregulation is only one small part of the disorder. There is also sleep disruption, flight of ideas, pressured speech, disorganized thought, changes in energy levels - the list goes on. These symptoms come in go much like the way migraines or seizures do: in episodes. Each episode consists of 3 phases: pre-phase, attack-phase, post-phase. This means sometimes an individual has warning signs of when an "attack" is coming. For instance I know when a migraine attack is coming because of the rings in my vision that I get beforehand. I haven't quite learned yet what exactly my signs are for my Bipolar Disorder, but I'm sure they exist. What makes Bipolar Disorder unique compared to Migraine Disorder is that there are two types of episodes. With Migraines you either have an attack or you don't. With Bipolar Disorder you either have a depressive episode or a hypomanic/manic episode. Either type of episode can severely mess up sleep patterns but it's usually the manic side that creates sleeplessness.

it sounds awful, but you didnt have to explain it in full. i decided to google it a minute later and i forgot to delete the comment XD

but it does seem awful to go through, how the heck can you live with it? i dont mean to bring in any thoughts of suicide, in case you are in your manic phase thingie.

Well it's something you are born with. The "breaking point" that moment when you become dysfunctional enough to be diagnosed is different for everyone. For me it wasn't until about my mid-30s. My oldest son it wasn't until his early teens, but my youngest is 6 and has it too.

I don't know what it's like to be "normal" and I would be lying if I said I never had a suicidal thought, but I will say I have never tried. I have been very fortunate to have a very supportive and understanding social network in my family life. In fact I had reached such a dysfunctional low at one point after my youngest was born, my family - my parents and my baby sister - sat down with me and had a meeting. It was that meeting that led to me getting my diagnosis of Bipolar Type 2. It was a turning point for me and I am grateful for it and I only wish that more people out there could be so lucky to have such insightful people in their lives.

As far as living with it goes, I think of it as it's a lot like living with diabetes. You learn as much as you can about it and then you manage it the best you can. It requires having a good care team at a good med clinic. It requires finding a good therapist you click with to learn about the coping skills that work best for you. For me it's mostly mindfulness. Basically it's simply just taking care of yourself the way you should. If not sleeping to a strict routine triggers manic episodes for you, then it's in your best interest to start following that routine.

OH AHAHAHA this explains a lot!! i got diagnosed recently (though i've known for like forever)
i'm on the same boat in terms of operating without sleep, but recently episodes haven't been triggered by sleep schedule errors, although there are plenty of variables that could also explain it

Yea there are three of us in my family with Bipolar and so the lights are always on at night in our home. -_-

The Bipolar episodes themselves can mess up sleep too, so for us things are pretty complicated when it comes to sleep.

I don't think I am one that is triggered by late nights, but my 6 year old son is. I'm thinking that may be more due to his age though and his body just being over tired even though he doesn't think he is. That boy ran on average 2 hours of sleep per day before he was diagnosed and given his meds - not sleep meds mind you, but the mood stablizers. He gets about 6-8 hours per day now, but hey that's better than before and he's more stable. My 14 year old son is more like me in regards to sleep patterns. We will do really good for awhile and then suddenly have a sleepless run, then crash, and then go back to being good again. lol

Hmm that's cool to know, I don't know too much about bipolar and this was enlightening. Several times I tried to stay awake for 2 days straight just as a challenge and by the 2nd day I can see that it's not worth it and it's quite difficult to not dose off.

It's not something I recommend. ^_^; After awhile the brain will start to play games with you. I kind of think of it as dreaming while still being awake, but in truth it's called hallucinating. :P I do know that by the second day or so when I'm talking to people I get this look from them that tells me I'm not always making sense - which is aggravating because that's usually when I feel the most brilliant. lol For some reason I have the best ideas during those moments and my communication skills just go down the drain and wouldn't you know it, I always forget those ideas after I have gone to sleep. So I'm just left with the feeling of having been cool and here's everyone calling me an idiot. lol So the magic question is did I really have an awesome idea or did I just imagine I had an awesome idea? I will never know unless I can master communication while half awake I guess. :P

Moral of this story: don't be a toad, get your sleep, and make sense when you speak! :P
