To make a basic survival hole dig about a 5 by 2 out of a hill 5 blocks long 2 blocks think then get about 5 blocks of wood. Make a crafting table. Then craft some tools. Here is a list of what I think would be good starter tools on a scale of 1 to 10.

Pickaxe-7

Spade-4

Hoe-6 (depends if you want to farm for food)

Axe-7

Sword-9

Once you dug out you hole go mine about 12 blocks of stone use 8 of the 12 for a furnace use the rest for tools.

When night comes close up your survival hole and wait for the night to end. I would suggest mining, crafting, and this is a great time to pause the game and go AFK (or Away From Keyboard)
