This is a short story I completely made up and is no way intended to 'mock' the victims of the crash of The Smiler rollercoaster at Alton Towers.
-
"Man, this queue is takin' years! I'll be an old man by the time we get inside," Daniel moaned loudly, his expression darkened with impatience. His three friends merely smirked at him, the only girl there opening her mouth.
"You already are an old man, mate." The blonde flipped some of her hair over her shoulder as she surveyed the others, her gaze occasionally flickering towards the entrance of the theme park. She couldn't help mask her own annoyance at the amount of time they'd wasted simply waiting to get in.

The youngest of them all - a sometimes irritating boy of 12 years old - Kieran, rolled his eyes and shoved Beth forwards as the queue dwindled slowly. "Stop whining and get a move on, I wanna go on The Smiler as soon as possible! I've been waitin' all year for this, I ain't gonna waste anymore time listenin' to you all being moody." He spoke rather commonly, which caused their quiet Dutch friend, Mitch, to become confused by the slang. However, he'd gotten used to Kieran's favour of words and now ignored most of what he said. Meanwhile, Mitch himself led the party of the queue, already at the tickets. He beckoned them over with an expressionless face; his void of emotion usually caused many girls to fall at his feet. He'd been through so many that his friends began to stop commenting everytime he brought a random female to their house. If that was how Mitch prefered to live, then so be it.

Primarily, Daniel snatched at the tickets and grabbed hold of the nearest arm available - unfortunately for Beth, she fell of victim to this. He yanked her inside and with Kieran skipping ahead, they made a beeline to where the towering Smiler stood. The rollercoaster looped around elegantly through the summer sky, carriages soaring down the tracks. Distant screams that no one was sure whether they were of terror or amusement surrounded its atmosphere. Mitch (unsurprisingly) was the first to reach the line and the others followed. Kieran bounced around with excitement, nonsense foaming from his mouth as his beaming face got on his friends' nerves. Eventually - after enduring around half an hour of Kieran being a nuisance - the four friends all clambered into a carriage and prepared for what they hoped would be a memorable time of their lives.

It had initially gone so smoothly.

The carriage struggled its way upwards a number of slopes whilst everyone dangled their hands in the air, their mouths formed a shape of the letter 'O'. Even Mitch appeared positive, whilst the other three were a bag of jittery nerves. Their screams deafened the area, the watching queue below laughing along with them. They didn't realise that the happy screams from Beth soon became a burbling pitch of terror. She attempted to slap Daniel round the face to catch his attention - luckily, he did. He met her dark gaze, horror swarming in its depths. She then managed to protrude her finger through the air, right to where an empty carriage lay, waiting for its next victims and her friend spotted it immediately - his own scream echoing hers. But it wasn't just because of the collision that they'd be facing in seconds -

It was the person inside it.

A pale corpse lay flopped in the centre of the carriage, its greasy black hair matted over its diseased face. Its mouth was gaping, a trickle of blood streaming steadily down its chin; and the dark bleak eyes were zeroed straight on the four friends. A liquid of crimson surrounded it, the black seats of the carriage stained with drying scarlet. But as they all met its eyes, a vision of their lives flashed before them - all the mistakes they'd made... all the people they'd let die away. And then it seemed as if the lifeless body was transforming into all of the people they loved, a sudden twisted grin perking up its features as their carriage drew closer.

Beth managed to grasp hold of Daniel's hand, whilst Kieran and Mitch also held on tight. They were all going to be descended to hell, dying one of the most common deaths. As the final hill of their lives gave way beneath their carriage, they all prepared for the painful impact with the dead body.

There had never been anyone inside.
