So lately I've been speaking to a few people who are thinking of starting their own server and straight away I'm thinking "Do they know what they are getting into?"
Now speaking from past experiences being a server owner isn't all that it's cracked up too be, here's a few reasons why.....
1. You have to manually look after and make sure the servers running fine everyday and if any errors do decide to happen then you will have to shut down the server and then you get the wave of constant messages over Skype or post's on the server if its posted up on PMC about "Why is the server down?", "When will the server be back up?" Evan when you sent a message on the server that it's going to be down for a while.
2. Evan with Admin's and Moderators on the server, You will always end up getting constant in game messages of "Can you help me build this?", "Can you come have a look at this awesome thing I've built!", "I've been greifed come look, OMG, OMG,OMG!" and then more of a constant spam of messages.
3. You will always get that "One" player who will either be a fan-boy of the Owner hoping he will get a promotion or some special player treatment or you will get the player who is an asshole to everyone on the server but he only does it when you the Owner is offline.
Now if you end up running a popular server all the stuff I said just above will end up in you building up in alot of stress also you will start to become bored of your own server, This is what happened to me the constant spam of messages and server upkeep sent me into shutting down my server.
But I still want to run a server, what do you advise I do? Well first of all make sure you have 2-3 people who will support you and help keep the server up to date. Then I would move onto getting moderators for the server who will be the support and force of your serve, so your not the only one getting spammed with help messages. Final thing make sure you know what your doing with server plugins and what not, This will make your life so much easier.
To stop your own boredom of your server, maybe set up a separate world where you and your selected friends can go play and then going back to the normal world when it needs you.
All what I've said is to help future owners with what to expect when starting a new server.
Hope this helps a few of you guy's

it's not that fun, and getting players is super difficult...
