Ah, the great game of Minecraft, Spleef. This strangely-named game has been around for quite some time, and a lot of us take it for granted. Being one of the few Minecraft-specific minigames (games that were invented IN and are kept IN Minecraft alone), just about every person who plays the game knows about it, and how to play it. But, very few of us seem to know where it started, what its original rules were, or even if those rules are still in place for the "official" spleef game.

Well, I hope to change that for any and all who read this blog!

The Beginning

Well, the first thing to address about the great game is its name, don't you think? Spleef... where would something get that name? At first thought it really doesn't seem to make much sense, and that it's only a made-up silly name for a new game type. Actually, it's not! The name is a play on the word "Grief", as that is the basic idea behind the game. Think about it, griefing and spleefing are very close in their ideas, aren't they?

The creators must have been geniuses! I mean, this game is incredibly fun, and almost every user loves it! SO many people look to spleef for spiritual enlightenment and soul-searching peace that it must have taken years to develop and get a test game going, right? Well, I may be exaggerating a lot, but it was quite some time ago that the original idea came out, as I say in the next line.

Direct from the Minecraft Wiki: "Spleef was started on a server before June 23, 2009. According to the first wiki entry, the rules and name were created by Greenslimy, Pentaclam and Maulrus."

The Rules

Spleef has rules! Amazing, isn't it? Even though the rules are vastly different from server to server, plugin to plugin, mod to mod. the basic idea of the game is the same.
  • Creating blocks between the game's start and end is forbidden. (Depending on the plugin/server)

  • Creating or destroying blocks after you have lost the round is not allowed. (Depending on the plugin/server)

  • The losers must replace the blocks that were deleted during the game after the round is over. (Optional, occasionally a script is used instead)
  • If players have entered a stalemate and are all on separate "islands," and unable to access each other to continue play, either the person with the most space wins, or the arena is reset to continue play. Usually, the latter will only happen in arenas who use a script to reset the play field.
  • Hitting players is against the rules.(Depending on the plugin/server)

Nice rules, eh? Bet you didn't know those were the actual rules behind a game you most likely love, eh? But, you're probably also noticing that this doesn't cover the millions of variations there are for spleef. Well, have no fear, those are only a few lines under this one.

Spleef Variations

Whoa, there are a LOT of these. I mean a LOT. So many that I think it could have its own blog for it. I'll cover what I know, and list the few I don't.

Multi-Layer Spleef: This is basically normal spleef, but you don't have only one floor. You can have 2, 3, or 100 floors if you want. It can make a player really irritated when they think someone's been beaten, just to see there are more floors!

Burning Spleef: Using wood, wool, or other things that burn, you light the place on fire and watch as the players all run like chickens with their heads cut off. Last one standing wins.

Bomberman: Set it up so players will be able to place TNT that ignites immediately. If you don't know the rules of Bomberman, basically all they do is try to blow the other players asses off. It's really fun, and involves lots of exploding.

Reverse Spleef: Everyone runs on the floor while someone under the floor breaks it. The person under the floor is the only one allowed to break blocks, and you had better not catch anyone else trying to!

Maze Spleef: Basically Spleef in a maze. If you don't know what a maze is, google it.

Snowball Spleef: Use of snow blocks will give players snowballs to throw at other players, which will make it easier (in theory) to knock them out of play. This one is also very fun.

Lava Spleef: A lava pit, some players, and ice and/or snowballs make a very dangerous combination of spleef elements. Basically, knock whoever you can into the pit of burning death.

Whew, so much info on spleef! If you found this interesting, please give it a DIAMOND! Pretty please? It only takes a second, and is on click.

If you REALLY liked it, and would like to see more, subscribe to me, and favorite it, as I will be adding more info as I find out more.
