Server Staff Positions - Are they really what they're treated as?

You notice on your favorite (or least favorite, depending on your point of view) server, the new staff member in creative, building his low-quality structures around spawn, and you think to yourself, "Wow, wouldn't that be fun, being staff, and getting all those commands to (ab)use?". But is that really what a staff position is supposed to be?

Commands. Are they given to use or abuse?
When you earn that snazzy title of [Mod], [Admin], etc., it's not given to you so you can enjoy the commands and perks it possesses. You're granted that position and its perks so you can help make the community better and safer. You really think that the owner would give you a rank with banning/kicking abilities so that you can mess around in creative while the advertisers, griefers, and spammers do their work? There's VIP ranks for that.

Just because you have a higher rank doesn't necessarily make you superior.
Okay, so perhaps you have a staff rank. You probably think that makes you all high and mighty, more powerful than the donators themselves, right? Wrong. Just because you get that Trial Mod or Moderator tag in your name, doesn't make you a superior being who rules over all other players. You're still one of them, but just with a few extra powers. The donators still probably have more powers than you.

Spawning stuff for friends and getting payback. Why?
Survival servers are called survival servers for a reason, you know. Just because you're staff doesn't give you the right to spawn all these diamonds, and sell them on the economy for a fortune. That just plain defeats the purpose of there BEING an economy on the server. And spawning stuff to give to your buttbuddies has the same effect, as well. Oh, and that guy that killed you over and over in the PVP arena? You still don't have the right to abuse him and blow up his house and steal his items. That's plain childish, and worthy of a demotion.

So... What does it really mean if I'm staff, then?
A staff member's job is not to abuse their archenemy, feed their friends a billion diamonds and armor, marry a 5 year old acting as a girl, or have fun in creative. Their real job is to be sure the server remains intact, meaning making sure it's not griefed, and if it is, it's taken care of. Or if there's a spammer in chat, they're muted, or when those creepy pill ads pop up on the forums, then the thread is deleted and then advertiser is banned. Your job is to be sure the server is safe, rather than being sure you have fun trolling the owner's hard-earned players.

TL;DR: Staff positions aren't about creative and marrying 5 year olds.

Worst ways to get staff:
Only choosing friends, giving out ranks by donations

Choosing Friends:
Its probably going to be alright if you've known them for a long time and they haven't turn into a jerk [don't be afraid to deny your friends if they are like this, you can find bettter friends], but if they are your new friend, don't automatically OP them... Your asking to get your server screwed.

Ranks by donations:
Anyone can pay that fine amount of money. Then they get jr mod. But, oh no, none of your staff, or even you, are paying attention to that person... You decide to rank him up because the players said he was fine, when really in their head, and in reality, they are being threatoned by the jr mod that they are going to be banned if they say a peep wrong...
You get the picture.

People who give ranks to friends disgust me, just as well as those who sell staff ranks. Either way, it's asking for a ruined server, really quick.

Yeah. If they are willing to do that, their fault if their server goes havac. And they can't blame the players who are innocent, only themselves.

And what's worse is when their friends FORCE them to give them OP, or "they won't play on your server".

You can really find at least one abuse staff member in just about any community, no matter how hard they try to conceal it.
Personally, I think that when (if) you're given staff, first off it should not be through a web application, that you should be a low level with only commands like kick, and mute, maybe even temp ban and if you seem to be trust worthy you might get a little extra and get promoted not based on how much time you spend playing or how much of a kiss up you are but based on how good of a staff you are!

On 'my' server (I'm Mod there) we just use the applications to see who is interested in being Mod/Admin. If we need a new staff member all the staff just gets together and suggests players. Then we take a look on the forums to see if these players actually want a staff position. We have had some people denying the staff position (Yes!), because it ruins the fun of minecraft survival on the server (I agree, I never play survival anymore...).

Then for the first month or so the new staff member is in his/her trial-stage, what means he/she can do everything someone with his rank can, but we keep a close eye on him/her.

My advise: Don't recruit staff from Sites/Forums, staff members need to know the server and its community if they want to be a good Mod/Admin.

In my community, we do go by applications, and if they are accepted, they're placed at the Junior Mod rank for quite a while, which has very basic commands, until they can prove to us well enough that they're ready to become a fully-fledged Moderator, and from there, they can work their way up to a higher rank, also with proof that they're ready. Then, on top of that, we have limited slots on each rank, so we don't have 5 different Senior Moderators, Admins, etc.
"Staff positions aren't about creative and marrying 5 year olds." well said, well said

The Minecraft community is inevitably filled with children, and some of them would rather have fun with their powers, than do what they're supposed to.

I must say this is definitely an agreeable point of view on the matter, as a staff member for a large creative server myself, we [the staff] are all required to do our jobs adherant to these sort of rules. A staff position is not there for people to abuse for themselves it is there for you to work, to keep the server running smoothly as it should be. Yes you can have fun when you have the time but not at the expense of other players and not when you have a job to do. If you're not beneficial to the running of the server there is no point for you to be staff. Thanks for the blog, it's a really good guide for those who are staff members or are looking to become so on any server.

Thanks. These days, it's hard to find good staff that actually understand what the rank means.
I hadn't read your blogs until now. I seriously think I've experienced magic in it's purest form.

I used to read a bunch of blogs of people complaining about staff abusing their power and I never had it happen to me so I could never relate. But I did end up on a server with my buddies (and it was the first time I managed to get them to come back to minecraft in about a year) and after hours of playing some staff member was flying around invisible and placing lava everywhere, firing arrows and just ruining our experience. Then after that they gave up and didn't bother with Minecraft again :/
Do you mind if I put this on my server's forums giving you credit? You can see it here.

Also, I made a minor mistake in one of the last sentences. "...then the thread is deleted and then advertiser if banned" should have the "if" replaced with "is".

Seen this so many times. been staff on servers where the other staff just dont care. its really saddening since i know so many people who left a server for bad staff. on the server im helping with now, i make sure that any staff who abuse in anyway or cause any problems are demoted promptly.

Yes, good and mature staff will not abuse. If someone abuses once, they probably aren't fit to be staff. It's good to weed out the bad players as soon as possible to attract better players.

Exactly. Even with weeding out the bad players, The most i ever give a new staff member is mod, and then they have to be consistently doing good work for them to even think of reaching admin. Its insane how someone could just give Admin/OP to some random person who says they are good staff on a forum -_-

Yeah, staff applications aren't really the best way to choose staff.

Yeah very sad indeed :(

Indeed! People need to understand that you can enjoy the perks it comes with, but that doesn't call for complete neglegation of their job.
Nobody understands what being an administrator means anymore. Instead of having fun banning people and muting people who killed you, you do all the hard work, and you must make sure the server does not fail. Administrators set everything up, make announcements, organize everything, and make sure the server is unique and fun. Administrators usually have other jobs as well, such as being a forum administrator, creating/managing the website, etc.

Exactly. People just assume that since they are staff, it means they were granted creative for their own needs, when really, it's to help the players by keeping the server safe and intact.
