Here are some summer themed poems I wrote recently. Enjoy!

  The first one is similar to a sonnet in most ways. Meaning that it has fourteen lines and uses basic rhyme schemes. It contains two stanzas.


Sitting outside on a summer night.

The moon is up and shining bright,

Reflecting the sun’s shimmering light.

With fewer lights it’s such a sight.

Shooting stars light up the skies.

The blinking lights of the fireflies

Glimmer bright compared to the bug’s size.

The cold creeps as the darkness lies.



Bats flap past as they hunt for a meal.

The coyote’s howl makes you jump with fear.

In the country, there’s no sound of a wheel.

The Owl’s hoot comes with cheer,

As the night comes, it’s cold you feel.

As you enter your house that you hold dear.





  The second one is a Haiku suite.



The sun shines brightly.

Warming the earth’s great surface.

It’s getting too hot.



Swimming will cool me.

The lake’s refreshing water.

I don’t want to leave.



The night is longer.

The sunset is colorful.

I am peaceful here.





  The third is a free verse poem, meaning it had no rhyme or rhythm pattern.





You wake up to the chirping birds.

You’re glad that it’s summer.

A time for vacations in the sun.

A time for days at the beach.

Roasting marshmallows on the fire,

And enjoying the chocolaty s'mores.

Fishing at the beach.

Swimming in the lake.

It is great to be there,

Enjoying the summer fun.

Hiking mountains to their summits.

Gazing for miles around.

The possibilities for summer are endless.

  And finally, a poem for all of you who may be on the southern hemisphere, where it is winter right now. This is also another free verse poem.

What’s Christmas when it’s summer?

Or what’s winter in July?

Feeling left out because others
Are living in a different place.

Just be glad you have the seasons,

Because those at the equator do not.

And if you’re at the equator,

Enjoy the year-round heat.
