In this tutorial, we will learn how to create Alpine terrain with glaciers. This is the first tutorial in a much larger series, so stay tuned for more! Please note: This map is not a complete step by step map. This is because we want to encourage you add your own elements. A basic knowledge of WorldMachine and WorldPainter is required.

Prerequisites

Instructions

1. Open WorldMachine. The default template world should load up. It should look like this:
undefined

2. Now delete all the devices and groups except for Advanced Perlin. We will add Terrace and Height Output later.
undefined
3. Now create a new Radial Grad  and change the settings so that it is a cone and the raidus is grater than 9km. This will be the shape of our mountain.
undefined
4. Connect the Radial Grad to the Advanced Perlin. The Advanced Perlin will shape the cone so that it looks natural and believeable.
undefined
5.The cone still looks a little plain, so lets edit the Advanced Perlin to make the terrain slightly rougher and ridged.
undefined
6.Now the cone looks more like a mountain, but it still looks artificial. We can make it look more natural with one of WorldMachine's most powerful feature: Erosion. Go to the natural tab and create two erosion devices. One device will erode the terrain to be smooth while the other will erode with terrain to be rough. Set the preset of the smooth erosion device to be the preset "Classic WM + Power" and the rough erosion device to be "Good with terrances"
undefined
7. The terrain is looking slightly more natural now. Lets combine these two erosion devices together so we can get it somewhere in the middle.
undefined
8.For some of you, the terrain may be a little low. We can make it steeper and higher by clamping it. Go to Filters > Clamp and select the option "expand". Then click the button that says "Find extents" . This is especially useful for those of you who have little or no experience with WorldMachine.
undefined
9.Lets terrance the terrain to stimulate the effect of weathering. Go to Filters > Terrance and select the preset "Glacically Scraped".
undefined
10. Your WorldMachine project should look like this:
undefined
11: Lets create some beaches. Beaches are created in WorldMachine using Coast Erosion. Go to Natural > Coast Erosion and select the preset to "Cliffs and Beaches", then check off "Use Global Water Level".
undefined
12. You are almost done! Create a new erosion device and connect it to the rest. Make sure you use the preset "Classic WM + Power"
undefined
13. Because we are creating an snowy terrain, we need to stimulate the erosion and weathering caused by snow. Select Natural > Snow and set it to the properties below.
undefined
14. We are finished the terrain! Now we have to export it as a heightmap, a black and white image that represents the height of the terrain. You do this by going to Export > Height Output and setting the export format as .png and choosing the export location.
undefined
15. Your project should look like this now:
undefined
16. Go to the menubar (World Commands >> Project World Parameteres) and set the world resolution to 1024. So now the world will export as a 1024 x 1024 image.
undefined
undefined
17. Click on the Height Output device and click write output to disk. The world should start building. After the build is over, there should be a note telling you that your output has been written. Navigate to where you wanted the output. There should be a heightmap there.
undefined
Well done! You have successfully shaped and manupulated your terrain! But we are not finished yet- we have to use WorldPainter to import it into Minecraft.

Having trouble right now? Feeling lazy? Have the heightmap I created, it is most likely different from yours, but it will do.
undefined

Part 2: WorldPainter

1. Open WorldPainter. The Icon should be a shovel.

2. Import the height map using File >> Import >> Heighmap. Select the heightmap and edit it to these settings:
undefined
3. Now paint the world to whatever you want. We reccomend that you use custom worldpainter brushes to make it look as natural as possible. The cracks brush can produce beautiful effects.
undefined
4. Now it is time for the glaciers. Create a ground cover layer and use these settings.
undefined
5. Use the flatten tool to create a flat area for your glacier and paint the custom ground cover layer onto it. Now export your world.
undefined

Now Enjoy Your Map!

Very insightful and well-thought out tutorial. Shows that you spent a lot of time on it and it is very contributing. Good job!

I myself don't terraform but this is a great tutorial for someone looking for some help in this area.
