The Blogs Section: What Can Be Done?

Hi guys, Greytopher here with a blog. This time I'll be talking about how the blog section has drastically changed over the past year or so, and how 'writing' blogs has changed definition since the time I started writing them last summer. Hopefully you'll all understand where I come from on this topic, and hopefully turn some heads in the right direction for writing blogs in the future.

What It Was Before...

Back when the blogs section started to get noticeable, there was actually some decent content that was on the reel. It made me somewhat happy and content to see a section properly used (mostly). There were the famous rants that were mostly written, actual blogs that were informational, and more.

MLP was still big so there were a lot of references to it, and to my knowlege, there wasn't any form of art, as (I think) people didn't post it because it wasn't really considered a blog. I was inspired to write on this website by the people who posted great content. I feel as though the purpose of the site is to post things to share with others, while at the same time to inspire others to show off their work.

I was inspired by mostly the start of OliverFrenchie's blogging career, as well as two others who prominently wrote rant blogs. They wrote about very great topics, stayed on topic, and had lovely content to read. It's changed today, and not for the better. So what can be done to change the blogs section into something more respectable?

What Is Seen Today in the Blogs Section...

Today, it's changed a whole lot; and not particularly for the better. Now a days, I don't really see too much in the blogs section that I consider a good 'article'. What I see now, is advertisements for servers, bad art (not all of it is bad, mind you), 'looking for team' posts, and more and more to come.

If you look currently on our popular reel, it's most likely filled with art, maybe a server review/promotion, art, or something that ISN'T PMC or MC related. Then, occasionally you'll have your tutorial or article, but not as frequent as one would like. The whole purpose of the blog section was to share written content about PMC/MC to the Minecraft community. So what happened to what we had?

What Can Be Done To Change?

I can't be the first one to say this, but the quality that's degrading the most in posts has to be the blogs section. This is mostly due, I would think, to the excess of new users joining the site. Now I'm not saying to shun the new users or to look down upon them, but with new users brings new ideas, and without knowing what everything was meant for, they post things that are mostly frowned upon.

Now this is where people such as yourself come into play. If you're a blogger and you want to see improvement in the blogs section, you'll have to do two major things. The first thing would be to keep on posting original content, and interesting content. Mostly things that will have to do with Articles, Tutorials, Opinionated blogs (appropriately), Reviews, etc.

The second thing that can be done is to report the submissions that should belong on the forums. There are a lot of site moderators that I know, and that I've witnessed, saying that they don't see a lot of reports coming out of the blogs section. If something is reported, then it'll be removed if seen fit. If you want to see change happen in the blogs section specifically, you have to act on it, like I'm trying to do right now.

Fortunately, some change should be in PMC quite soon. We can only hope for the better as time progresses. Hopefully change can be brought into the community, and the quality of posts will go up as these rules are implemented, or as this little reminder has said.

I guess the main purpose of why I made this is to revive the original, written content that used to be posted here so frequently. It's sad to see how the blog section has turned out, while the other sections (minus the mods section...) still has some great content being submitted.

Oh, well what I meant was that along with the blogs section, the mods section is also failing with original content being created, all I see anymore are more tools mods, to be honest. I totally agree with you; it may of been a confusing sentence!

Grey, I can relate to what you're talking about here. Truthfully, I agree that the blogging section does need work. I sometimes wonder if PMC should have a section for art and cinematics. Nonetheless, this was a good blog. Keep up the good work. -Skullduggerycain

Making it so a blog needs to have a greater amounts of words before it can be published might filter out some of the crappy blogs.

Of course, that may simply encourage users to fill aforementioned crappy blogs with more crap.. :P

Anyways, as a blogger myself I very much agree with you. Diamond and favorite.

I'd have to say, I never really thought I'd be starting a blog on what I'm covering now, as the subject is quite technical (yet I've been asked numerous times to do) yet, I'm doing it as there is no quality material out there that people can find on the subject for beginners. Most of it is poorly written, or is in YouTube videos by 15 year olds that don't know how to use proper syntax and formatting, or is just plain old out-dated. Together we can turn out content that we can be proud of.

I agree. Something must be done. Everything's in the wrong place, there are request/help blogs flooding the place, and the forums aren't used for the things they were intended for. Diamond and favourite.

I would think that it would also be the cause of our forums not being the best; people don't really pay attention to it (I would say) because it doesn't give them any EXP.

It's quite sad that this blog is needed. In just about any other forum, when a post is placed in the wrong area (even if the content of the post is remarkable), a more senior community member will step in and, gently and firmly, inform the newer member that the post needs to be moved to the appropriate (often listed) section. After this, the amazing part starts. The new community member ACTUALLY MOVES THEIR CONTENT. Imagine that. It's an easy piece of housekeeping that new members are expected to do until they learn the full layout of the forum. I think that sort of thing should be expected on PMC. There are far more lighthearted forum sites out there that are FAR more strict about outright deleting misfiled posts than this. Anyway, that's just my $0.02.

I do agree, I didn't want to make this blog, but something has to be done. There are too many crap things that should belong on the forums, and there aren't enough moderators to sit in the blogs section and do everything there. Thankfully with the new rules, things will be a lot more clear; hopefully, people will understand to report things in the blogs section more often.

What needs to be done:

  • Specify whether or not blogs must be directly related to Minecraft or PMC. There have been too many issues in the past with people posting completely off topic blogs that have just as much relevance on any site.
  • Increase the character limit to at least 1500. Half the blogs are extremely short and able to be read in the blink of an eye. If you don't actually have anything to say, don't say anything at all, or just post your insignificant tweets on the forums where it more than likely should have gone in the first place.
  • Prohibit the blog subjects that cause the most spam: interviews, subscriber celebrations, discussions of real-world events, etc. These all do little more than cash in on a certain user's popularity or a recent tragedy, while creating little to no applicable content.

The only upcoming rule change I disagree with is the prohibition of videos, as many users like to post quality Let's Plays, mod or texture reviews, vlogs, and tutorials. If possible, the submission system should be coded so that including a video automatically counts as a certain amount of characters, so you can still say something in the description section without having to copy and paste your entire transcript. Inevitably this would lead to people posting videos that aren't even theirs, but that already happens a bit and would be the lesser of two evils compared to removing videos altogether.

I completely agree with all of your changes; and I do think that these changes will be implemented when the new rules come out. I think that videos should stay, but the main problem with it was the amount of characters put in for video blogs, which is why they're banning them. I would personally not mind Let's Plays, and all that stuff as long as it has some kind of lengthy description, because now a days people only get around the limit by spamming.
