Prologue:

You have all heard the stories. A ghostly figure roaming the world, closely following your every move. A simple myth, or a puzzling truth? Thousands of theories have emerged from the minds of dedicated thinkers. Some depict this figure as the so-called Herobrine, an ancient entity that perhaps predates the vast Minecraft world itself. Others depict the figure as the ghost of the brother of the legendary warrior, Steve. Few go so far that they even depict the figure as the true legendary warrior, betrayed by this Steve we’ve been taught to love. And yet, none of these theories are true.

The truth can be found in an ancient story lost through the ages. As the story itself has been lost for longer than our people remember, the title of it has been lost as well. I like to refer to it as “The Story of the Spectator”. So then, as this story is being written in a book for the first time, you can refer to this book as “The Book of the Spectator”. Well now, I suppose it is time we stop the introduction and go straight to the story. For you to understand the true story of this ghostly figure, we must go back to the beginning. To those of you who are now asking themselves “The beginning of what?”, the answer is quite simple: the beginning of the world.

The Origin Tale:

The silence of the calm, lifeless void was all that existed. No movement, no sound and certainly no life. Until a particle effect appeared at an undefined point of the endless void. The particles danced creating movement and sang creating sound, but most importantly they seemed to be alive. In a moment, the first chunk was generated. It was a dense forest, with a small hill in the center and a small river on one side. This chunk would later be referred to as “The Origin Forest”.

Little by little more chunks began to generate around The Origin Forest. Some containing vast amounts of water, some containing lava pools and few that entirely consisted of sand. The chunks never stopped generating, and to this day no one knows if they have, although no one dares go so far as to try to locate the edge of the world. But as the chunks kept generating, something happened in The Origin Forest. From the void particles emerged the first four entities ever to exist:

The Warriors:
One male and one female. Although they had only just been created, they knew their purpose from the start. To vanquish evil, to build and to create.

The Keeper:
An unknown entity, whose purpose is to this day unknown to almost everyone but itself. Rumored to have later created the Nether realm.

The Spectator:
A male of the same race as The Warriors focused entirely on knowledge and understanding the world around. This is who we are interested in.

Knowledge and Power:

Although he was likely the most intelligent of the four, none of the other three entities knew of The Spectator’s existence, however he knew of them very well. One of his earliest studies was focused on the strengths, weaknesses and personality traits of The Warriors and The Keeper. He studied them over long periods of time, and despite of his studies he still found them all too dull.

The Spectator deduced from his studies that each of the other three entities roaming the world had an important purpose, though he was unsure of what purpose The Keeper had. Very early on in his studies he thought that the purpose of The Warriors would be to guard the world from whatever posed a threat to it, but more importantly they had the purpose to sustain life in this world through repopulation. Yet, The Keeper had a rather chaotic nature that suggested it was to be the contrast of the world, seeking to destroy rather to create. Shortly after he had finished his study, The Spectator decided that in order to maintain the balance in the world, The Keeper must never cease to exist.

Later on, The Spectator stumbled upon more relevant things in the world which he could research, such as the existence of worlds beyond his own. It was through days, months and perhaps even years of research that he had finally found the means to travel to one of these other worlds. And it wasn’t just any world he could travel to, it was the world where he could obtain infinite knowledge capable of finally satisfying his hunger. All that was left now was to get to his destination.

Through his research he found that by generating enough energy at a certain location, ideally at bedrock layer, it was possible to create a “hole” in the world leading to the void, temporarily of course. Once through, a person could theoretically fall or walk to another world, assuming they know where they’re going. However, the destination world would have to be generating a similar amount of energy to open a “hole” on that side as well. The Spectator did not think this was a problem, because he assumed that the world he was going to was constantly generating the needed amount of energy.

He did not need to go far to find an ideal spot to open the “hole”, the caves near his library all went down to bedrock level. Once he arrived there, he built a small but clever redstone contraption. Essentially, this contraption was supposed to create and detonate explosives at a very fast rate. To protect the contraption itself from the explosions, he covered it up with obsidian, a material with a very low chance of being destroyed in the blast. He took a deep breath and then he activated the machine.

He positioned himself as far away from the machine as possible without hindering the time frame he had to get through the “hole”. The effects of the machine were magnificent. Particles flew everywhere from the redstone and deafening explosions roared every heartbeat. In a matter of seconds, the “hole” had been created. The Spectator ran and jumped into it without a moment of hesitation and on the other side he saw the origin world: The Void.

Across The Worlds

The Void was unlike anything The Spectator had ever seen. Everything around him appeared to be still. He was not falling down, but he could move in any direction he desired. The only visible thing in this strange new realm was the three pale lights around him. One light was almost right next to him, possibly indicating that this is where he came from. This light shined white. To his left there was another light, not very far from him, that shined a bright red color. Lastly, on his right he saw a purple light in the distance. This was where he intended to go.

Once he came close enough to the light, he was not entirely sure what to do. He was hesitant to touch it because he did not know how it would react. After a bit of thought though, he realized that he had no other option, so he put his hand into the light. Then, he was not in The Void any more.

The world he stepped into had an atmosphere similar to that of The Void, but it was nowhere near as silent or as empty. This new world consisted of islands floating in mid air with strange tall pillars on them. The ground was made of a pale yellow material, unlike The Spectator had ever encountered. All around him he saw tall black creatures with dark purple eyes. Before he even had time to blink, they all suddenly teleported around him. It was clear that their intentions were not friendly, and The Spectator did not know how to get out of this situation because he had never encountered creatures like these. However, all of the creatures around him disappeared instantaneously as a fierce roar was heard from the distance.

The roar came from a large dragon that looked a lot like the purple eyed creatures. The Spectator had never seen a dragon before, but through research he had once discovered that there may be a red dragon roaming one of the many worlds. Of course, this dragon was not red, he assumed that there was more than one of these magnificent creatures. When the dragon approached The Spectator, it was not directly speaking to him, but he could still hear a powerful voice in his head, speaking in a language quite familiar to him:

I have been waiting, Spectator. Waiting for far too long. Welcome to Brine, or “End” as you would refer to it. I am sure you have many questions, and I can offer you the means of answering all of them. Are you interested, then?

The Spectator nodded, still in awe of all that was happening around him.

These pillars you see all around you have crystals on their tops. These crystals are the source of my power. Using them, you can transcend into a being of pure spirit, capable of walking through worlds at will and accessing whatever you desire. I will tell you how to do this, if you make me a promise to do one simple thing once you are in your new form. Let me start by telling you a story.

When the particles first created the worlds, there was a slight...mistake that occurred. These creatures from our realm, the Brinemen, they did not appear within your world, the Overworld and instead they were left here with me as their guardian. Once you transcend, I want you to use the dragon egg to allow them a safe passage to the Overworld. They do not mean harm unless provoked, so you will not be putting the lives of the Overworld beings into any direct danger. Promise me that you will do this and I will teach you how to absorb the energy of the crystals.

It all seemed just too fast for The Spectator. From travelling between worlds to being offered to transcend into a being of pure spirit. Yet, he knew he had to accept this offer. There was just too much knowledge in the world to pass, too much to see. When he knew he would accept, he did not need to speak, the dragon already knew what he wanted to say.

Very well. You must go to the highest of pillars, that is where the most powerful crystal stands. I will take you up there. Once there, you will have to touch the crystal. If your will is strong enough, your spirit will be free of your body and you will truly become the Spectator, if not, the crystal will explode and your spirit will be eternally trapped in the void.

The Spectator climbed onto the dragon and the dragon took him to the pillar. Once he saw how magnificent the crystal looked, he could not resist anymore. Quickly, he approached it and touched it. As he touched it, the dragon said in a powerful tone:

Don’t let them down.

The Spectator’s body began to fade. He could not feel any of his limbs, but he could tell when he was moving. Everything around him looked different. He could see the simple details in everything so easily, and he knew everything about an object just by looking at it. He could observe carefully and move through anything. His transcendance was complete, he was now the true Spectator.

Epilogue:

You must be filled with questions by now. Yes, he did fulfill his promise. This can be seen by simply spotting the entities we call endermen at night. It is rumored that their presence created a portal to the End realm for worthy explorers to discover.

As for the Spectator, he is now often referred to as The Hero of Brine, or Herobrine for those who do not know this story. It is said that he can still be seen sometimes, watching, studying, spectating. If you do see him, do not be afraid. His goal is to observe, not to alter. To study, not to destroy.

And you may ask how I know all this, and I may not tell you. I am, much like The Spectator someone who prefers to study things, not alter them. Unlike him though, I am willing to share all my knowledge in writing. You may believe my story, or you may not. It will not make a difference, because The Spectator still roams the worlds and you are still likely to see him studying and watching. Studying and watching...

was expecting an Adam and Eve type story honestly, with the Keeper being an analogue to the Devil and Alex and Steve being Adam and Eve
