~ This will be written mostly from a story-telling perspective; for the most part, I'll try and keep it from being a factual listing of names and numbers; that's not nearly fitting of the illustrious series of tournaments and duels that is PBL.

PBL, better known as the Palette Battle League, is the site's longest standing non-official contest (as so wonderfully depicted by my thumbnail). Contrary to the open rules of the site contests, PBL gives a set of 32 contestants a limited group, or 'palette', of colors, which they then create a skin with to pit against their opponent in the bracket. It was created by the now-well-known forum moderator Hawkstormer, back on December 7th, 2013, nearly two years ago.

The monthly contest has grown to be a past-time of the skinning community, at times even a rite of passage, as younger skinners made a name for themselves as they climbed up the bracket ranks, jousting with the old-timers looking for a fresh spin on their skinning. PBL has seen its fair share of popular alumni, sporting members such as Kefka and DragonsDungeon on a regular basis. Amazingly enough, while the rest of the site seems to have slowed over the past months, PBL remains fully stocked every time a new season begins, something many contests/tournaments have trouble doing. This draw of the fantastic skinners of the site helps to keep the art alive, as we progress farther and farther along in our lives.

And now, a brief overview of each PBL season, with notes included inside the spoilers.

PBL Season 1: The Introduction of PBL, and the Beginning of PureNerd217
The first of many seasons to come, Season 1 brought the tournament into the public eye, and to controversy. The limited set of colors, while not unheard of, was not amazingly popular at the time; at least, not in the style presented. As the participants grew accustomed to the rigid and challenging colors, the project picked up steam, culminating at the end of the season in a victory by an upstart skinner titled PureNerd217; this would mark the beginning of his skinning career, that has grown so far since.

Funky Goblin VS. Chronicle1337
G4M3 4DDICT VS. Darkflame2050
aboveordinary VS. SpeedyCube
MusaTheLegend VS. PureNerd217
ThomasG VS. Ninniy
Alfy VS. TofuKnight
sualeos VS. TheSpaceToaster
Pig Republic VS. Ample12
Reerop VS. basicbrick
master_wolfe VS. -ATOM-
c_t_f VS. Elite_Ranger
oii57 VS. La_Pixel

Notable Events or Upsets:
- PureNerd's welcoming to the skinning community (generally).
- One of the first major appearances of IrishChaos (see thread page 10).
- The beginning of "drop syndrome", wherein a skinner does not make a skin for PBL in the first round, and drops out immediately. MusaTheLegend, and Chronicle1337, among others, were the pioneers of this sickness.

Grand Finals: Atom vs. PureNerd217 vs. Darkflame2050
PureNerd217 takes the victory, followed by Atom, and lastly DarkFlame.

PBL Season 2: The Short-lived Reign of basicbrick
One of the more uneventful seasons, even though it was only the second, Season 2 still held the smaller 24-participant bracket system that has since been replaced with a 32-user format. With Yuki and XDInsanity both dropping out the first round, Atom and SpeedyCube were left to wreak havoc among the more amateur participants in the contest. PureNerd was disqualified through the first round as well, amazingly enough, culminating in a victory by basicbrick.

~the bracket was messed up and put down wrong for this season~

Notable Events or Upsets:
- Atom is yet again defeated by the eventual winner of the contest, basicbrick taking him down in the Semifinals.

Grand Finals: basicbrick vs. TheTerraSnapper
basicbrick takes the win, with his Juggernaut entry.
PBL Season 3: The Rise of Knightsabers
*cough*mytimetoshine*cough*

The third season of PBL gave way to the career of one of the most successful skin duelists on the site; Knightsabers would reign supreme over the PBL battlefield for the next two seasons, and to this day, has never lost a PBL battle where he entered a skin. Appearing out of thin air, Knightsabers would go on to perform a string of upsets, resulting in the Season 3 and 4 crowns, being the only member to have ever won two full seasons, and consecutively as well. His factory-level efficiency for pumping out knights and robots would earn him his reputation and his signature style that he still carries today.

Notable Events and Upsets:
- Season 3 was one of the more popular seasons, attracting users such as peytonisgreat and uPro.
- Marked the first and only complete battle between PureNerd and Knightsabers, resulting in the victory of Knight.
- Contained one of the closest battles in PBL history between Knight and AquilaeVolanti, with the final tallies an extremely tight 43-41.
- The third consecutive season where Atom had been in battle with the eventual winner of the contest, attaining another second place in the three-way-finals.

Grand Finals: Knightsabers vs. Atom vs. uPro
Knightsabers takes the win, with a shiny Dragon piece.
PBL Season 4: The Plague of the Robots
As I've mentioned, Knightsabers went on to win a far more solid and affirmed victory in Season 4 of PBL, using a string of knight and robotic suit skins to bulldoze his way through the competition. Controversy rose around the popularity of robots and armor sets being strong in such 1 on 1 battles, leading to a group of users "imitating" the idea and creating a small flux of such skins. Leading the pack was SkittleZ, a relatively unknown skinner, who propelled himself using this tactic to the finals, where he eventually lost to Knight.

Notable Events and Upsets:
- The first and only time that a palette has been used twice; oddly enough, uPro made two bear skins from that palette.
- In a massive upset, Knightsabers turned Musa on his head, creating a marvelously generic robot skin to trump the simple design of Musa's, propelling him forward to the Finals later on.

Grand Finals: Knightsabers vs. SkittleZ
Knight defeats his imposter (all in good fun, hyuk) using a signature Knight skin.
smh I'm bored I'll update with the rest of this later

You should grab screenshots of each of the battle skins, PShop them together with names of skinners on the bottom and score on the top. You'll end up with 1 pic per Battle. Would be awesome to see the progress. Anyway. Back to lurking on the outskirts of PMC. Take my diamond.

A good majority of people in PBL actually delete their PBL skins, sadly. Even basicbrick deleted his season winner.

don't forget one of the biggest gaps between skins in history. PureNerd vs Pikamoar, 48-11 or something like that

That's not exactly a very flattering fact to have, so I didn't include it. There were a few other stomps that I omitted for that reason as well.

A nice read, it would also be nice to see a blog about the official PMC skin contests as well, though you might have a hard time getting info about the older ones.

That's an interesting idea, but it's like trying to take the meat off of dry bones; the site contests are based on votes and private judging, so there really isn't much "story" to be had. As in, each contest ends one way; there aren't any upsets beyond rankings, which themselves are very hard to call "upsets" (in some cases). Glad you found it a good read, though.
