The Do's and Don'ts of Running A Minecraft Server
[/b][/b]
Hello! My name is Pythagon, and I am fairly new to blogs on PMC. I never really posted much on my old account, so I decided to give it a shot here.
I wanted to talk about the Do's and Don'ts of running a Minecraft server- far too often I see servers that a ran by five year olds that know nothing about what they're doing; which brings me to my first do point-
Do:
1. Know what you're doing. Way too often we see servers that are ran by people with no experience in the field of servers. It's practically a waste of time if you are going to buy a server and then expect something magical to happen. What I'm saying is don't grab a bit of money, buy a server and then sit there expecting the players to come piling in. If you plan on buying a server, hop around a few popular ones with around 40-100 players online, and see what you like about each server, so you can compile ideas of things you like. Don't just jump straight in.
2. Work to produce a server people will like. Like I said above, if you buy a server and sit there waiting for players to come piling in, it won't happen. You need to do some work in order to get players to come on your server, and then keep them there. First of all you will need a nice spawn area- this is the first thing a user will see when logging on, and it will give them an overall impression of your server. You will need something that looks nice and will keep the user there looking at. A box made out of cobblestone floating in the air with a sign that says 'jump into the pool below!' will give a bad first impression. You want a spawn that looks nice and will draw the user in- keeping them looking at it. Also, don't have the spawnpoint infront of a ton of signs. If the user is bombarded with information the second they log on they will most likely just log off, or not bother reading it. By having one sign with a welcome message will encourage the user to stay. Choosing your server's features is a big step for the future of your server. It may be the reason you build up a playerbase or it may be the reason you are forever alone. Your server should be unique - there are so many factions servers out there that a normal one would just get lost in the background with only a few players. If you choose something unique for your server, such as custom mini-games that you have made yourself, there is a much bigger chance of people joining your server and staying. Advertisement is one of the most important things for all servers as it is what your playerbase depends on. If you advertise well, with a nice looking banner, and a clear but simple description that is the same across every server list you put your server on, there is a big chance your will get players. If you have a messy banner or no banner at all and a scruffy, badly-worded description that varies between server lists, your advert will put people off rather than draw them in.
3. Enguage with players. This is an important thing to do when running a server. If you do everything else well but then ignore questions new players have and don't enguage with new players, they will be put off your server. Enguaging with players can help you out massively - if you talk to them, help them out and get to know them, there is a bigger chance that they will stay. This can also help you when selecting staff for your server later on; the better you know people, the more you know how much trust you have in them.
Don't:
1. Act like a jerk. If you act like a jerk towards people, this will cause them to leave, or not come onto your server. If your server description on the server list looks something like 'JOIN MY SERVER NOW ITS THE BEST IN THE WORLD AND YOU SHOULD JOIN YOUL LIEK IT' then you, sir, are a jerk, and you will not get any players. Use descriptive language to tell the player about your server and why they should come on it - ask yourself; what makes my server appealing to people?
2. Ignore people. As I have said above, enguage with players. Ignoring people will put them off your server as it may make them think that you are ignorant, and no one likes an ignorant server owner. Also ignoring people may make then get annoyed as they are not getting an answer, or more importantly, any help.
3. Let other people do the work for you. No one likes it if you get your friends to make a server for you then take all of the credit - this shows incapability on your side, which can lead to making you look like a lazy owner that doesn't really care.
4. Force people to donate. Donations are donations - made at people's free will. They don't have to pay. A donation is something optional, and if they do donate it's usually a token of thanks or a kind gesture. Making people donate for things that you can get for free on any other server is pretty stupid - In the past I have seen many stupid things, such as having to donate to be able to ue diamond tools. It's pretty stupid, and people leave because they can get this perk anywhere else. Donations should add something to the game that the recepient will find useful and slightly overpowers normal players. For example, a nickname, special item or access to a plugin as a token of thanks for donating.
Thank you for taking time to read all of this - I wrote this blog as I have seen a few servers in the past that are ran by people that have no idea about what they are doing, so I wanted to put this blog out there to give people advice on running a successful server. I hope that these tips have helped you in some way or other, and I hope that you have enjoyed reading my blog and taken some ideas from it.

Overall, great blog keep up the good work.
