The Duties of a Gentleman.

In this day and age, while it’s not nearly so common for the noblefolk of the
world to have influence with the world’s affairs so firmly as they once did,
there is still a need for the services of a gentleman, and there will always be
those who aspire to act in a truly gentlemanly way, as well, if only to suit
their own desires. Being one to value honor and manners above most anything
else, I am here to help those of you aspiring to be a gentleman to do so. Now,
to begin, I feel it urgent to make it clear that the most prudent skill for a
true Gentleman is to know when, who and why to follow and lead individuals as
needed. Lacking this ability will, in almost every case, make you far less of a
gentleman and either little more than fodder, or worse, a tyrant who has
forgotten their place in the world.

You see, for every Gentleman, there needs be a Master, someone that you will
act to serve the interests of at all junctures, even at your own expense, but
this Master need not be just anyone. The ideal master is someone worth
following, someone who not only values you as a Gentleman, but values all of
their associates, and looks out for them, though the quality of masters can
differ greatly between individuals.

The Relationship of a Master and their Gentleman is a complex one, in it’s
ideal being one of trust and understanding, with the Gentleman being prepared
for any circumstance that may arise while in the service of their master, from
being prepared to feed and water their master to defending the master as the
situation demands. Being prepared for these scenarios is of course, one of the
gentleman’s most important skills, and is one that will often be improved upon
as one finds a new master each time, differing with their respective needs.
Where one master may need potions of healing frequently, another may require
redstone instead on many occaisions, though there’re always a few constants
that a wise Gentleman always has on hand.

Now, that being said, I feel I should move on to the actual duties of a
Gentleman in detail, covering at a minimum the most common duties, though it’s
important to note that these may differ depending on the scenario.

First and foremost, a Gentleman’s duty is to obey their master. If your Master
tells you to jump, you will jump without question, and should be reasonably
expected to know how high, far, and fast you should jump to suit your master.
This is, however, a skill that takes time to master, but is indisputably the
most important for a gentleman. A Gentleman will often be tasked with things
such as fetching items and materials for their master, or with conveying a
message or even simply feeding their master, or slaking their thirst. Be
prepared to obey your master at every turn, lest you fail as a Gentleman.

Second, and nearly as important, a proper Gentleman need be prepared for many
scenarios, and in order to do so, it is advised a Gentleman be educated in as
many areas as possible. A master Gentleman can complete any request made of
them by their master, no matter what. To easy matters, however, I’m providing a
short list of common situations and how to be prepared for them.

Common Scenarios for a Gentleman.

It Is important, of course, to note that not only should a Gentleman always be
ready to react to their Master’s needs, it’s also extremely important that a
Gentleman be prepared to act in every situation, and not be out of their master’s
reach when needed. In many situations, this means being where your master will
need you before your master even knows they need you. To this end, many
Gentlemen opt to train themselves in parkour or, when possible, teleportation
magics to aid in improving their mobility before other options. For thaumcraft,
this would be any number of spells, items, or other methods of opening passages
in walls, or teleporting through them. In Ars Magica, this would be a short
range blink spell, or even in vanilla, it would be having a collection of
enderpearls on hand at all times to be one step ahead of your master.

The final vital skill for a Gentleman is to know when and how to speak and act
in every situation. One must always present one’s self as nothing but the
perfect gentleman to anyone but enemies, for your words and actions no longer
represent just one’s self, but also your Master as well, and to lower one’s
self in the eyes of others is to lower your Master’s own reputation among
others. It is recommended that a Gentleman be as literate as possible, but
should take care not to be overly verbose, lest you appear to be some manner of
chatterbox to others, which can be nearly as bad for one’s reputation as being
illiterate outright. Spelling and Punctuation, as well, is important to a
Gentleman, and should never be taken for granted.

With these things being said, of course, There is still a single topic needing
covered in the making of a Gentleman, and that is one’s appearance. As
mentioned previously, one’s reputation reflects not just on themselves, but
also on their Master, and this also applies to physical appearance. A Gentleman
should always be immaculately dressed, ideally in a suit, though other styles
may apply as well in a given setting, and is in the end at the Gentleman’s
discretion. That said, some obvious things to avoid are things such as
presenting one’s self as a cookie monster, sentient waffle, robed ruffian, or
other such ridiculous skins, even should one’s Master choose to do so, unless
it is an immaculately dressed Sentient Waffle with their similarly baked
Master.

With the subject of appearance covered, most of the
important points for a Gentleman are officially covered, though it is worth
noting that these do not constitute all of them, and it is up to a Gentleman in
training to learn to cover the rest through experience. However, there are a
few ways to make a Gentleman’s live easier. First and foremost is being
properly equipped as a Gentleman, prepared to cover as many scenarios as
possible, and the second being skills to learn and improve one’s self in. The
list of each will be provided at the end of the guide.

Hopefully, we can return some class to the worlds of Minecraft starting here,
and anyone seeking further advice on a situation to handle in as Gentlemanly a
way as possible may ask me for it freely. A Gentleman does not refuse to aid
those who can use it without good reason.

And finally, worth noting, is that as of the time of this being written, I am
seeking a new Master to server, but be aware this is no idle thing. Those who
would seek a Gentleman’s services need remember, after all, that the
relationship between Master and Gentleman is one of mutual respect, and to
abuse it will lead to great regret.

The List of items a Gentleman is advised to carry with them at all times is as
follows:

In Vanilla:

List of Vanilla items.

In Modded:

Any teleportation items available, for similar reasons to enderpearls. Can
replace enderpearls in many situations. Of Particular importance are “Blink”
Items, effectively anything letting one pass through walls into the space
beyond.

Fall damage removal items, and bags, both for helping one’s Master carry things
but also to carry items you would normally as a Gentleman.

Anything beyond this is dependent heavily on the mods available. In situations
where Tinker’s Construct is available, do note that many Gentlemen use
Longswords and Rapiers to the point of ignoring all other weapon types when it
comes to melee.

Beyond these, it is at a Gentleman’s discretion what to improve when, though it
is recommended that these be learned first, as they all aid in a Gentleman’s
duties.
