Easy peasy lemon squeezy shading

This is a super simple method but it can be very effective. The more you skin the more you'll adapt and shade in your own way, but I think this is a really good way to do it when you're just starting off because it's pretty damn fool proof.

This is done in MCskin3D, you can do it using other programs but it'll be way more of a hassle and you should just download MCskin3D because it is da best thing eva.

1) First of all make your basic skin. Here's one I prepared earlier:

undefined

Look at this chump! Blockiest, worst shaded guy in town! You don't want your skin to be the blockiest, worst shaded guy in town do you? No. No ya don't. ONWARDS!

2) Select this tool.

undefined

Make sure it's set on darken. Light is for people who go outside remember? I find 20 is a good average and can be used for most things, but feel free to play around and see what exposure fits you and your skin best.

3) Outline all of the blocks of colour with darken, like this!

undefined
Looking better already, nearly there!

4) Use darken again on all of the corners of the outlines you just made. Your simply shaded skin should look something like this:

undefined

And you're done! Congrats!

Looks way better than what we started out with right? This is the simplest, easiest to make skin in the world but that little bit of extra effort on shading makes it look a ton better. More complex skins can use this to full effect, for example:

undefined

As you can see not everything is outlined, and you'll learn what to leave and what to just lightly shade underneath through practice, but the main idea is the same. Happy skinning everyone, hope I've helped :)

NB: To anyone who says this shading is bad and nooby and I'm stupid and it's ugly and blah blah blah - I did not set out to create some mind blowing l33t shading guide, I set out to just give some tips that anyone can make use of. If you don't like that, you don't have to use it! I'm sure many of you are already good at shading and are advanced skinners, and in that case, this guide isn't for you. It says "For Beginners" in the goddarn title. Rude comments are not helpful nor are they appreciated, so please move on.

I had came across a tutorial very similar to this, but it also had details on making inner spaces darker and a more advanced way of making shades darker, but now I can't find it. Can you remember? Ever heard of it?

Not exactly good, but much better than no shading.

That's neat!  I have a similar tecnique, one that makes the skin appear bright and glossy.  It's good for video game characters.

I checked your skins, and you use noise, which is not a ''similar tecnique''

The skins I have now use noise, I was referring to skins I have made in the past.

Noise is worse than any kind of shading, turn back.

I agree. This is way better than noise. Even flat color with no shading is better than noise.
