Steve and Awesome were mining again. They didn't really need to, because they were rich, and could buy anything they needed. They were just bored. They didn't talk much as they dug their tunnel. Maybe, if they had been in deep conversation, Steve would have noticed when Awesome vanished. As it was, he didn't notice for a full half hour. He ran back to where he had last seen Awesome. He was nowhere to be found. Steve was distraught. Awesome was basically his soulmate, and they shared everything! For him to just disappear was heart-wrenching. Steve called for Awesome, but got no response, as he expected. He decided to go up to his house and think what might have happened. He reached the entrance of the tunnel, but... the entrance was gone. It was solid stone all around him! Steve started to feel the room spin, only to realize it was an illusion of his distressed mind. He didn't know what to do. He sat down, and stared glumly at the sign on the wall next to him. The sign... on the wall... next to him... Why would there be a sign there? The realization hit him like a blow to the head! Someone was stalking him! He read the sign.

"Awesome's story has come to The End"

Steve was mortified! They had killed Awesome! Again, Steve felt the room spinning, and collapsed as he felt the floor drop out beneath him. He lay motionless on the cave floor, unconscious from loss and misery. His mind writhed at any thought that came to it, lashing them away.

Steve finally woke up. He wasn't in the cave. His vision was still blurry, but he saw many tall people around him. He must have died as well! He rubbed his eyes and sat up, feeling the sandy texture of the ground beneath him. It was night, he could tell by the stars, but the stars looked very strange, and there was no moon. He saw one of the tall men look at him out of the corner of his eye. The man's eyes were purple! Steve blinked, and the man was gone, leaving only a purple haze behind. Steve fully woke up at that, realizing the man was one of the rare endermen. Only, all the others were too. They were too rare to all be here like this! What was going on?! Steve remembered the sign. Why had it said "The End" instead of "An End"? Could Awesome still be alive?!

He remembered hearing an old story of a dimension worse than death itself, with creatures that would kill you in a second everywhere. Could it be? Was the legend true? He looked around for Awesome. He saw a man far away, and started sprinting to him. He stopped short, and looked down into a black abyss that seemed as infinite as time, or even the lack thereof! He looked for a way around the abyss. He still had many blocks from mining, so he started to build a crude but effective bridge. As he was walking bravely across, he chanced a look behind him. The blocks he had placed were gone! What was going on?

Steve jumped for the edge of the island just in time, as the stone disappeared beneath his toes! He just made it, gasping for breath. He stood, breathing heavy, for about 30 seconds. He then remembered the man he had seen. Steve looked around for him again, and saw him just as he disappeared behind a strange column. Steve started after him.

The man was Awesome! But when he saw Steve, he just cowered and ran away. Steve chased after him. "Awesome, come back! Ito s me, Steve!" Awesome had a confused look on his face. "S- S- Steve? Who's Steve? I d- don't know any Steve!" Steve was horrified. Awesome didn't recognize him! Steve felt crushed, as badly as a bag of kittens being smashed into a brick wall by a dump truck. Awesome gaped at Steve's head. Steve walked around Awesome, noticing a gash on the back of his head. That must be why... Steve thought. Then he realized Awesome was still watching where Steve's head had been. Steve looked back, and followed Awesome's gaze. He saw a huge flying behemoth. "What is that?!", screamed Steve. Awesome returned, "The Ender Dragon." Steve asked how Awesome knew. Awesome didn't remember. He seemed to have very little recollection of anything. Then, suddenly, the dragon turned and faced them both. He started rushing them. Steve Yelped in fear.

The Ender Dragon was coming! That thing must be able to do countless damage! thought Steve. He grabbed Awesome by the collar, and dashed behind the obelisk. A stream of light started coming from the strange tower to the Dragon. Steve wondered what was happening. He remembered the legend he had heard about the end. It had included a phrase which Steve had never understood.

When the great behemoth comes,
And the beam closes the gap,
The best you can do is run,
For the horror has just begun.

You must shoot the beacon of death,
Or will never be able to rest,
As the great dragon won't be killed,
By even the best of skills.

Shatter the beacon's face,
And watch as it spreads the flame,
For you are close to leaving this place,
And seeing The End of the game.

Steve shivered, as everything clicked into place. He had to smash the beacons! He whipped out his bow, and nocked an arrow. He asked Awesome if he had one, and Awesome said yes. Steve yelled, "SHOOT THE BEACONS", and ran off, pulling back the bowstring. He aimed, and fired. The arrow hit its mark, and Steve was knocked off his feet by the ensuing explosion. The beam between the dragon and the beacon disappeared. Steve felt triumphant. He pulled back, shot and fired again. Another explosion. He heard one explode from Awesome's shooting. He grinned. The world once again became a blur, draw shoot, nock an arrow, draw shoot, nock an arrow.

Awesome ran out of Arrows. Steve had 4 left, and there were only four pillars left. He could win! He fired 3 times, hitting 3 of the pillars. He aimed at the last pillar, knowing he would be out of this dreadful place soon. He pulled back, steadied his aim, and...

An Enderman knocked Steve to the ground. The arrow wizzed uselessly into the void. Steve was dismayed. He attacked the Enderman in rage, splitting it in two. Steve didn't know what to do. He watched the Ender Dragon, and realized it wasn't destroying the island. He starting digging up the ground, and realized it was called Endstone. The legend was true, then. He started to build a tower up the final obelisk. After what seemed like hours, he reached the top. He got ready, knowing what would happen, bracing himself. He raised his sword, and brought it down as hard as he could.

Nothing happened. Awesome had stopped him, by pushing him to the side. "I don't know who you are", said Awesome, "But you saved me from this place, and protected me, helped me survive! I have to return the favor! You and I both know whoever breaks this will be killed, whether it be from the explosion or the fall. You risked your life for me, so I will for you!" Steve protested as Awesome dragged him down the stair case around the tower. He stopped at half way, roughly throwing Steve down. He ran back up to the top before Steve could get up. "Goodbye, Steve!" Awesome brought down his fist.

Steve couldn't watch. He heard the explosion, and hurled himself from the tower with rage. He hit something, and stopped falling. Steve was riding the Ender Dragon! He couldn't believe it. He gouged his sword into the dragon's neck, twisting it. The Dragon lost half of its life. It also veered to the right. Steve could steer! He could catch Awesome!

He twisted the sword again, and drove the dragon towards Awesome. He watched as Awesome grabbed the tail of the dragon! The dragon whipped his tail, and Awesome started to slip. Steve could only watch in horror. The dragon lashed with its tail again, and Awesome fell. After all that, Steve thought, Awesome would still die! It wasn't fair! Steve gouged the dragon again with his sword, killing it. A lone tear fled from his glistening eyes down his face. The dragon started to glow, but Steve didn't care.

Awesome would die. The dragon started to disintegrate, and Steve fell, his eyes dull. It didn't matter what happened anymore. Part of his soul was dying. He waited to hit the ground, and closed his eyes, memories flashing before him. He remembered meeting Awesome, and had a flashback-ception, as he remembered having flashbacks when Awesome had "betrayed him". Steve managed a fleeting smile for a half-second. Steve opened his eyes and saw the ground. He closed them again. He hit the ground.

He didn't hit the ground hard, though. And he landed on his feet. He blinked his eyes at the harsh light. He thought he must be in the afterlife. He looked to his left and saw Awesome, confirming the thought. Suddenly, though, words started flashing across his screen.

-I see the players you mean.
-Steve and Awesome?...

Steve thought the whole conversation was rather philosophical. It ended with:

-You are the players.
-Wake up.

Steve blinked, and realized he was in his mansion! Awesome was lying unconscious on the floor next to him. Steve gasped, amazed that they were alive. He rushed Awesome to the hospital. He knew he would be alright. He knew they both would. Steve grinned at the sign on the wall next to him. It read:

o I see you have survived. A shame really. This won't be the last time you see me!

Steve groaned and collapsed on the hospital bed next to Awesome's.
