Yours is not humanity's first or only advanced civilization, not even its most advanced. Thousands of years before your recorded history, there were other advanced civilizations, some of them even greater than your own. Many still exist in your history in the form of your legends. But just as Homer's Odyssey has proven to have some small grain of truth to it, so to do all of your ancient stories.

There were ancient civilizations in your jungles, vast, far larger in scope than you would ever suspect these "primitive" peoples to have been capable. There is the lost city of Atlantis, and there are other wonders buried under thousands of years of dirt, debris or water which you have yet to uncover.

I am The Witness. I was there when these Underwater Ruins were once a part of a vast and thriving ancient metropolis. Every piece of technology you now have has been rediscovered. Every piece of it has its roots in these previous civilizations. Everything you have now, we had then, and more. But the proof of this has been hidden away from you. Because as advanced as you are in your science and technology, you are still extremely primitive in your spirituality.

Come with me now, and experience what it was like back then. Bear witness with me of those final days when a king named Agearius ruled a vast city named Cireneus, and made a terrible mistake...

"Your highness, I do not recommend digging any deeper. All our data suggests that to do so would be to risk a global event."

King Agearius walked to a nearby window. Outside he could see Cireneus, his city, laid out before him, glowing gently in the sun. The king wore a white robe of a material that shimmered like gold and flowed around him. It was simple attire, but King Agearius was not taken to dressing up in finery like some of his subjects. His golden hair hung down to the middle of his back, a metallic looking band gathering it in place. As he turned around to address his head engineer, it revealed a rough but handsome face, surrounded by the same, carefully groomed, golden hair.

"Urika, the city is growing faster than any of us predicted. We need those materials. This island may be as big as a continent, but its foundations are weak. Would that our ancestors had discovered this before settling here. We either mine the materials we need to reinforce the base of the island, or we sink into the sea. We have no other options. We have been over this. We have taken every precaution. Unless you have some new ideas as to what we can do, I have no other choice but to proceed."

"I understand, your highness. My team and I have worked exceptionally hard to find another solution. Other than evacuating the city, which I recommend just in case this does not work, I know of nothing else we can do."

King Agearius tapped his chest and spoke. "Telimus, we will continue to mine for the materials we need. But I feel that Urika is correct, the people should be evacuated first. Begin immediately."

"Yes sir" came a quick and clipped reply.

The king turned to his head engineer. "Wait until the evacuation has completed, then proceed. Be sure you and your team have all the protections in place you need."

Urika tried to meet his king's gaze, but failed. "Yes sir."

Two days later the king stood with his people on a distant hill overlooking Cireneus. There was a rumble, a gentle shaking of the ground, then stillness. Minutes passed, then a scared voice broke through the King's com unit. "I am sorry, Your Highness. We... We have failed. We could not contain the gasses, the pressure is too high and building rapidly. Please mo..."

There was a tremendous shake, then the ground moved, as if something under it was trying to break out to the surface. The king gave the signal, and his people fled. He waited, alone on the mountain, watching as the ground surged, swelled, then seemed to withdraw into itself. The city tilted one way, then the other. Buildings cracked and began to fall. Then a huge boom, like the voice of God, echoed among the peaks, knocking the king to the ground.

On his knees he watched Cireneus disintegrating in a vast cloud of rubble and white hot flame. It was too much. Too bright to look at. It would kill him where he stood. Almost too late he activated his shields. The blast flattened the hills and threw the king ahead of it as if he were some ball a massive giant had thrown. Even with the dampers, the impact nearly knocked him out. Then, blessed darkness.

When King Agearius awoke he found himself slightly buried under a growing layer of ash and debris at the edge of a vast crater which extended all the way to the horizon. Looking down he could see ocean water already filling the bowl where once the city of Cireneus had stood. The king lay there on the broken ground and wept. Overhead the sun had vanished behind a thick cloud of ash and debris. It fell against his still functioning shields with a perversely gentle pitter-patter, like rain.

When the king finally regained his feet and climbed up the nearest hill, he could see no sign of his people. He tried his coms, but received no reply. Looking back just once, he watched as the broken remnants of his city were slowly submerged. Then King Agearius turned and began to walk away, heading for the last planned location of his people. They had to survive. They had to rebuild. But all the possible repercussions of his choices weighed heavily on the king's heart.

Take heed, all those who read these words. Humanity's reach has always been beyond its grasp. This is the terrible yet wonderful thing about your race. You are capable of attaining such great heights, yet can just as easily fall to such great depths. But you are growing. You are learning. The mistakes of your past have stayed with you. Another great civilization, as spiritually advanced as it is technologically, awaits in your near future. I, The Witness, have seen this.

Be encouraged, and know that I, and others like me, are watching.
