THE FINAL CHAPTER

Chapter Five: Striking Back

Despite deciding to strike back, the Alliance did not know much about the Sypherians. They had never seen their homeland, and had only observed their battle tactics for a short amount of time during the very brief battle before the fall of Aldenthro. Using the Arkellian Empire's corvettes and Synestran scouts, they quietly observed the Sypherians' nearby base. The airships would fly far above the landscape, trying to make out the landscape. What they found was certainly an intimidating sight.

The Sypherians only seemed to have two major areas of interest; a massive, gold-adorned harbor with looming walls and huge trees. Houses, temples, and boats flooded the harbor, and the entire harbor was in a constant movement; troops were everywhere. At the rear of the harbor, a massive golden gate stood, protecting the entrance to the Sypherian Citadel. The Citadel was certainly a site to be seen. A massive spire stood in the center, surrounded by temples of various size, with two bridges spanning the valley between the colossus and the mountains around it. Decoration covered the building, and gold and glowstone shone around it, creating a golden glow that covered the citadel in an aura of beauty.

Needless to say, the scouts were intimidated. They reported back to Rapp and Rova with their findings, who exchanged grim glances. However, an attack was necessary after the Battle of Port Aldenthro, so Rapp and Rova devised a plan.

Other than a few guard towers, the rear of the Citadel was relatively unguarded. If the airships under the control of the Alliance could gain enough altitude to make it over the mountain, they could attack the citadel will little resistance, as the Sypherians had not yet developed airships.

The day of the invasion, the attack force was gathered at Aldenthro; it was certainly a site to be seen. Dozens of Synestran ships gathered outside the Aldenthro harbor, while their few airship counterparts docked at the aqueduct. The massive Arkellian armada gathered on the opposite side of the city; half a dozen of the massive Etherwind-class airships hovered in standstill, while dozens of corvettes buzzed around them like frantic bees. The last few details of the attack were worked out inside the central castle, and then the attack was launched.

The attack on the harbor was to happen first; the Synestran navy would attack the eastern side of the harbor, drawing the majority of Sypherian boats and troops to them. The majority of the Arkellian airships would then strike on the Western side, cornering the Sypherian force. While all the commotion was going on in the harbor, a few ground troops would quiety take out the guard towers to the rear of the citadel, allowing the entire Synestran airship force to attack the citadel with relative ease. The plan was flawless; or so it seemed.

And so the combined forces of Synestra and Arkellia set off for battle, the Synestran navy first to engage in battle. The ships managed to sneak up on the harbor until they were within 50 meters of the first wall. A warning cry went out among the Sypherians, and suddenly the harbor was in a frenzy. The Synestran navy opened fire, and the nearby houses, temples, and boats exploded in smoke. However, the attack did not go as expected; the Sypherians were ready for them. Blocks that had seemed decorative in the harbor walls suddenly slid aside and cannons appeared in their place. The Synestran navy was under heavy fire, and over half the group was lost in the first hour of battle. Frantically, the leaders called for assistance immediately. The Arkellians attacked as planned from the other side, but unexpectedly, many, including the etherwind-class battleships, could not make it over the tall harbor walls, and either were left or crashed. The few that did make it over were able to help some, but were not a complete savior to the bombarded Synestran navy. With the battle in the harbor going sour, it was up to the citadel group.

On the other side of the Sypherian landscape, troops silently slid from shadow to shadow, sneaking up on the guard towers. The troops inside the towers were used to an easy life; after all, no one ever attacked Sypheria, and were easily taken out by the Synestran guerrilla troops. The ships took their cue and rose up, but again many were left behind when they could not ascend high enough to rise over the mountain tops. The ships that did immediately opened fire on the citadel. The panicked Sypherians inside immediately called on the troops in the harbor, who then retreated to the citadel, leaving the harbor open to assault. With this new opening, the Alliance was easily able to take the harbor, and many ships docked, allowing their troops to reach the ground.

On the other side of the colossal gate, a single Synestran airship was all that was left attacking the citadel. Unexpected ballistas had appeared from the main spire of the citadel, and most of the ships had been destroyed. The captain of the ship, however, was a clever man, and he saw the masses of Alliance troops struggling to open the main gate. He then proceeded to bombard the gate with all the cannon fire he could muster from his small ship, and the gate was broken. The main access bridge to the citadel was quickly flooded with Alliance troops, and the Citadel was taken.

The great nation of Sypheria had fallen.

It's just the ending of the current series of Synestran lore. Soon I'll be writing some for the newly formed nation of Halcyon, as well as for some other nations and cities.
