Hey-a guys, Frances here with the third blog of the "Many Masks of Minecraft" series. I don't have much to say in this prologue except for thank you for all the support on "Mask of Words", it shows me some people are willing to read my wordy blogs. This one is even longer than the last (Shoot me now!) although it does still cover some important stuff. Depending on who you are, you might only end up reading half of it.

Please do note that while I say o guyo , it can apply to either male or female genders.

The Mask by Anonymous

The [Mask] is but an illusion,
A Name for something not quite true.
A symbol, perhaps, or a hidden collusion;
wrapping itself around your mind, easing you.

So as once more thee wear your [Mask],
and stand at the emperor's side,
take a moment to ponder and ask,
'Why do I obey you, and with your laws, abide?'

There are two main sections to this blog. One is for owners, the other is if you are, or wish to be staff on a server.

Owners

This bit is for all the server owners out there. One of the most confusing parts of making a server is getting the ranks balanced and worked out. A server should have, in my opinion, only four (4) staff ranks (aside from owner).

Developer

The developer is the back-end guy who handles everything plugin related. This is the only person beside the owner who should have console access. This is, more or less an unofficial co-owner. They do anything from installing a plugin to writing one themselves. This person should be someone you trust, but that doesno t mean it should be a friend of yours, nor does it mean it shouldno t be. Make sure they know how to use the plugins and set them up. If youo re trying to figure out what permission node to give them, just give them the ultimate node
  • .

  • Administrator

Administrator seems to be the most misunderstood concept throughout the entire Minecraft community. A lot of people view administrator as o ultimate modo , which really isno t true. You shouldno t get admin ONLY because youo ve been a moderator for a while. Administrators would be the people who hire a majority of the staff, releasing you, the owner, from having to do so. They should handle the highest important in-game things, not necessarily being a chat hawk. While they are very trusted people, they really have no reason to have console access, but should also be given the
  • permission node.

  • Moderator

These folks are the main force of any staffing program. They are the ones who usually handle chat and would be the people who review any of the o majoro issues before talking to an admin to deal with them. If someone complains about a PvP camper, or someone who bypassed Towny protection and stole something, this group of people would be a preliminary observer, to see if it requires more attention. They need commands to do their job, but not much else. The ability to kick, mute, temp-ban, jail (if you use it), warn (if you use SimpleWarnings, which you should) as well as vanish and fakequit would be best for their job basics.

    Helper/MiniMod

If you think of staff like the military, these are the privates. They wono t have much in the way of commands, but it is a sort-of training period for the further moderators to be sure that they know what they are doing. They will be more or less confined to watching the chat and handling questions to prove themselves. Not the most responsibility, but certainly one that shouldno t be overlooked. They should be allowed to use mute, warn, and potentially jail. It may seem like you areno t giving them enough, but this rank should be really barebones.

    Friends as Staff

This practice is generally frowned upon due to the fact that friends might feel they get special treatment, and some owners give them it. They can break rules and use fake excuses to get out of it, all because theyo ve known someone for a while. Io m not saying you cano t have friends at staff, but be sure they understand they wono t get special treatment, and stick by it.

    A Side Note

Now, this is just with the plugins I could think of from the top of my head. You should, if you are going to borrow any of my concepts at all, take them and modify them to fit into your scenario as to best suit YOUR server. Dono t copy this word for word as, chances are, this wono t work exactly well for you if you dono t try to make it fit your situation. Also, after initial staffing is handled, you probably dono t want to do too much in the way of applications. Just have your administrators and such keep an eye on the people in-game for the best qualified folk. I might have missed things, oh well; I apologize in advance if I did.

This section is for all you moderators and staff out there who dono t have a job similar to an owner. You are the few who hold down the fort in server generally in game. This doesno t mean it cano t help an owner or an admin, it will just be aimed more towards chat mods and in-game related jobs. As staff-new or old-there are a few tips and tricks Io ve learned that you might not know. Granted, some of these are just plain common sense but will be stated anyways.

    As staff:

    1. Use your self-judgment! As important as the rules are, common sense is usually better.
    2. Respect all other staff. As obvious as this might seem, I see so many people who ignore it.
    3. Respect the players! Again, this is obvious to some, but not quite to others. Your job as staff is to ultimately serve the owner and keep the players happy! It just wono t do to strut around like youo re better than them. You want to be respected, not feared.
    4. Be fair and just. Always think things through before you do them and make sure your punishments are thought out before just passing them around.
    5. Look from all the camera angles. Not quite literally meant so much as figuratively meant. Be sure you think of a situation from all the sides as to follow guideline 3.
    6. Always fall true. Be sure when you deal punishments and rewards ito s always in the same guidelines.
    7. NEVER give donators or veterans the ability to bend the rules to their will. ALWAYS do the same as if they were a brand new player.
    8. Know the tool called a o verbal warningo . This may differ based on servers, but my guideline is two verbal warnings per player, then act. Granted, this can change based on what it is.
    9. Spamming is never an accident. Always ban spammers right away, ito s not an accident, they dono t deserve a warning.
    10. Dono t try to handle something you cano t. If you need a higher rank or even the owner to assist with something, for all things holy, ASK.
    11. Being staff should be because you want to help the server, not just because you want the power.
    12. Know the rules back and forth. If you dono t know them you cano t enforce them.
    13. Stick up for what you believe. If your owner is doing something that you dono t like, approach them in private to get them to fix it.

Alright, well thato s all I got. If Io m missing anything, just be sure to pitch in in the comments below! I love to hear your feedback. I really will try to make my next posts shorter, it isno t like I try to make them a thousand+ words long on purpose!

The purpose of a blog is to provide information.

    More information is generally better.

The more information, the more words. The more words, the less likely people are going to be to read it. I prefer a good ratio of words to information, so even if it isn't maximum, more people get the information.

Hm. I suppose that's true, for better or for worse.
