THE PATIENT FILES

Attention players who enjoy writing and RP,

I am introducing a fun writing challenge. With the Abandonment Project underway - I am looking for players to write their own lore-based pieces to be displayed within books located all around Hollow Hill Psychiatric Hospital and the neighboring town, Graystone, for all explorers to read.

There is some lore established in this project that sets the baseline for writing a Patient File. All details about the lore can be found below.

All credit to submissions will be shown in the in-game book and on this post. The submission will also be posted on our server forums here with the proper credit.

The Patient Files

The Prompts:

1A doctor of the hospital, writing notes about a patient (habits, personality changes, experiments, etc.)
2A patient's (in)coherent journals about life at the hospital or after their visit to the hospital.
3A resident of the Abandonment Project discussing strange events in the town, gossipping about neighbors or commenting on the effect of the hospital on the town.
4Custom Prompt (Please provide the context in your submission before the piece itself.)

* Please submit your pieces as a reply -OR- to TheAbandonmentProject@Gmail.com -OR- on Our Server's forum for Patient Files!

Established Lore:

Hollow Hill Psychiatric Hospital:

Completed on August 11th, 1938 - Hollow Hill Psychiatric Hospital became the beating heart of the town of Graystone. In its prime, the facility provided hundreds of jobs for the surrounding residents. Due to its sheer scale and a wide variety of practices, it also employed dozens of specialized doctors and researchers from around the world who had eventually settled in Graystone permanently. The opportunity was wide open for residents to take up work in nursing and assistant positions, as well as grounds keeping, maintenance, and other various labor jobs.

The hospital stood out against other asylums due to its proprietary research and drug trials in its early stages. While providing the most cutting-edge services and procedures, it also conducted experimental drug trials that were relatively successful. This carried on into the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Hollow Hill's patient roster grew so vast during its outpatient operation that it simply could not keep up with the demand, and ended its outpatient care operations per Director Aldrich's orders. Former outpatients went without care as current inpatients seemingly became imprisoned in the facility. The hospital doubled down on research and experimentation.

After some time and much criticism about the lack of transparency, Hollow Hill closed its doors to the public. The hospital focused entirely on research and development, presumably using the remaining patients as subjects. It is unknown what was actually developed in the hospital's late years, and the pressure from the public and various government and health agencies was building.

Rumors spread amongst residents of Graystone about the practices at Hollow Hill. Its public image had begun to degrade rapidly.

To break the silence in 1989, the hospital announced the suicide of Director Aldrich, among many other members of the hospital staff. All the horror and tragedy that took place in the hospital has driven residents out of the area with no intention of turning back. Occupants fled to neighboring towns and cities to start life anew. Once town officials began to head for the hills, Graystone had no government to interfere with its downfall.

Dear Mr. Barnaby,

As you know recently Doctor Collins has announced his resignation. However we are both aware of the problems that will arise if he makes it out. I promised to call him a taxi to take him to London at 9:00 AM. Do not let him leave the vicinity of the hospital. Mr. Barnaby do what you need to do, and keep Dr. Collins contained. When you are done bring him to quarantine. I will send Dr. Mills around with the serum. Afterwards I task you with keeping restrained until side effects wear off. The vacancies in room 39 or 40 will do nicely. Have another member of your security force guard him, though i doubt he will be petulant.

Director Aldrich

Dear Mr. Director,

I regret to inform you that I shall be stepping down from my position in your practice. I have found that it is in my best interest to move on from the practice of psychiatric medicine. I have been offered a spot at Berkshire and am obliged to take it. I thank you for the past months that I have worked here. I do hope that your work will continue to prosper. I will have left everything in good condition on the day of my departure.

Regards,
Dr. Alexander Collins

My dearest, Angelica,

Work at the hospital is most hectic. Just yesterday we had an all staff meeting in the auditorium. Taking note of my exceptional writing skills, the director had me take notes on the proceedings of the meeting. As of now, a few hours afterwards, I sit in my office writing idly to you, my wife. As much as I wish to retire to my bed, I have the first watch of the night and shall soon have to go. I have so much work to do.

Ever yours, Alexander

Doctor's notes:
April 3, 1937

Today was my first day on the job. Let me give you background info. I come from a rich American family of doctors. My parents wanted to send me to a nice medical school in London, and I was off. I was always a good student. The director recommended me to work in a psychiatric hospital as that was apparently the new thing. So I ended up here.
I was good at working with drugs, and being the most educated there, they put me in charge of the insulin manufacturing ward. We work hard and fast to keep up. It's quiet here. We work in silence with the occasional orderly coming in to get more syringes. You could hear the humm of the machinery. At the end of the day I walk out to my car and get in. I nod as the other doctors walk by. Its cold and the air smells of leaves. I start my car with a rumble and head out toward the bridge that will bring me to my apartment north of the hospital. I begin to think.

How did I end up here again? Well, I applied to a big hospital in London but they said they did not need more doctors, but they would need a replacement for a doctor in a few months. So I came here to work, keep myself active and earn some money. Heck, I don't need money. My parents have me covered.
I focus once again as my car pulls up to the big apartment my parents got me.

TO: Anna Vauller

FROM: Alfred Ziegel

DATE: 4/04/38
Letter of Termination
Dear Mrs. Vauller,

This letter is being written on behalf of the Hollow Hills Board of Directors. It is the formal notification that your suspension has been made indefinite.

You made it known in your last meet with Human Resources that you were aware of company policy. If there are three write ups in a one-year period, your performance would be carefully reviewed and termination was a possibility.

You have demonstrated an unfortunate lack of restraint in the duties of your position. Your manager has received multiple complaints from other employers who are uncomfortable working with you. You have shown a complete disregard for Hollow Hill's reputation, it's patients and your coworkers. Creating an extremely hostile environment, This is unacceptable.

Your last pay check will be sent to you by the end of the business day.

Best Regards,

Alfred Ziegel

Patient 0624 - Harold "The King" Johnson

The following documents tell the unfortunate story of Mr. Harold Edward Johnson, a poor schizophrenic man who was transferred to Hollow Hill Psychiatric Hospital in the year 1952. He was initially being treated in London, but an influx of patients meant that he had to be transferred. Mr. Johnson's delusions led him to believe that he was the first and only son of King George VI and that his true name was Edward, after the Kings brother. The following are the notes of Dr. Joseph Ferguson who was treating Mr. Johnson.

PATIENT ID: 0642
NAME: Johnson, Harold E.
DATE: 16-01-1952 10:46 AM
PHYSICIAN: Dr. Joseph Ferguson

The patient arrived today and thus far has been far less troublesome than our contemporaries in London reported. He has made threats of arrest and execution and only responds to "Prince" or "Prince Edward", but has otherwise not acted up. After consulting with Mr. Aldrich I've determined that electroshock therapy is the best possible way to treat these strange symptoms. I have hopes that by combining this with some reeducation we will be able to put an end to his illness.

ADDITION - 2:37 PM: After lunging at a nurse who refused to call him Prince, Mr. Johnson has been restrained with a straitjacket until further notice.

PATIENT ID: 0642
NAME: Johnson, Harold E.
DATE: 28-01-1952 07:12 AM
PHYSICIAN: Dr. Joseph Ferguson

The electroshock therapy appears to be working to some extent; Mr. Johnson has significantly cut down on his delusional statements although he has become increasingly violent. Luckily, our restraints have kept him under control. His struggling and attempts to break himself free have unfortunately led him to physically harm himself in some ways. Nothing major, just some cuts and bruises, surely nothing a few stitches and the passing of time can't fix. I'm hopeful for him and if we find a way to end his violent outbursts he could possibly return to some semblance of a normal life.

After a discussion with some of the night staff, it appears that Mr. Johnson has been acting up in the evening. According to them, he's been screaming about assassins and the likes. It's surely nothing, just delusions in the dark. I've asked for them to ensure his lights stay on in the night; he may lose some sleep, but at least he won't be screaming at the top of his lungs.

NAME: Johnson, Harold E.
DATE: 09-02-1952 02:15 PM
PHYSICIAN: Dr. Joseph Ferguson

Harold relapsed today upon hearing the news of the King's death. I did my best to keep lips shut around him, but with all of England in mourning it was only a matter of time. He has been hysteric all day, shouting about how it's his "time to ascend" and demanding we release him so that he may be coronated. Some imbecile told him Elizabeth is to become Queen and he has now begun screaming about how he'll have her killed. Unfortunately, his newfound violent tendencies were the one thing that stuck through his relapse. He escaped his restraints and stabbed an assistant in the eye with a nearby scalpel during his electroshock therapy. Instead of responding to Prince he now seems to prefer to be called King. This has become a right bloody mess, Mr. Aldrich believes we should pursue a lobotomy and I'm inclined to agree. We'll see if he calms down in the coming days but either way it's clear that a more extreme form of treatment is necessary.

PATIENT ID: 0642
NAME: Johnson, Harold E.
DATE: 13-02-1952 11:26 AM
PHYSICIAN: Dr. Joseph Ferguson

Mr. Johnson has not gotten any better within the last few days. He attempted to post a letter to the Queen herself, apparently laced with some dangerous drug he managed to steal from R&D. This final outburst has made it clear that a lobotomy is undoubtedly the best form of treatment for Mr. Johnson. It'll be performed as soon as possible to avoid any further incidents. Until then he's being guarded 24/7, we've essentially turned his room into a makeshift prison. I hate to have to keep a patient under such intense restraints but it's for his own good. His voice is horse from all the screaming but that hasn't stopped him from voicing his displeasure with his new living arrangements. "I'm the KING!", "I'll have your HEAD FOR THIS", etc. for hours on end. It's becoming bloody annoying. I know it's unprofessional for me to say this but... this lobotomy can't come soon enough.

PATIENT ID: 0642
NAME: Johnson, Harold E.
DATE: 15-02-1952 12:32 PM
PHYSICIAN: Dr. Joseph Ferguson

The lobotomy was only somewhat successful. Mr. Johnson is no longer rambling on about being King, but that's because he can barely form sentences. Similarly, he has stopped having violent outbursts but that's because he seems to have forgotten how to walk and function altogether.

Despite his body being in complete disrepair he still seems to believe he's the King. The only word he's been able to produce since the procedure is "King" and he's been saying it like a damn broken record. Besides that, the only other sound he's made is an off-pitch humming rendition of "Rule Britannia" which has terrified most of the nurses and assistants.

In his current state, I'm not quite sure what we can do with Mr. Johnson. I'll continue treatment as it was until we can come up with a plan that might be able to end with him returning to society.

Among the official notes there is a small piece of paper, seemingly misplaced. It reads the following...

Alice,

Harold has become a lost cause. Today for his electroshock therapy take him to room 12, the machine there has been malfunctioning so you can just turn it all the way up and put all the blame on it. Do it or I'll have your job. I don't want to do this any more than you do, but Harold has become too much of a burden.

Also, ensure he's comfortable. Give him the nice chair. Afterall... a King needs his throne.- Joseph

PATIENT ID: 0642
NAME: Johnson, Harold E.
DATE: 20-02-1952 05:30 PM
PHYSICIAN: Dr. Joseph Ferguson

An unfortunate incident occurred today. While Mr. Johnson was receiving his electroshock therapy the machine malfunctioned and he passed away as a result. Little is known about his lineage and as a result, we have nobody to inform of his death. By my request, he will be cremated and have his ashes spread outside Windsor Castle. I feel it's what he would've wanted. I can't help but feel remorse as I truly felt we were on the edge of a breakthrough with Mr. Johnson. It's so so sad. May his highness rest in peace.
