THE PATIENT FILES

Attention players who enjoy writing and RP,

I am introducing a fun writing challenge. With the Abandonment Project underway - I am looking for players to write their own lore-based pieces to be displayed within books located all around Hollow Hill Psychiatric Hospital and the neighboring town, Graystone, for all explorers to read.

There is some lore established in this project that sets the baseline for writing a Patient File. All details about the lore can be found below.

All credit to submissions will be shown in the in-game book and on this post. The submission will also be posted on our server forums here with the proper credit.

The Patient Files

The Prompts:

1A doctor of the hospital, writing notes about a patient (habits, personality changes, experiments, etc.)
2A patient's (in)coherent journals about life at the hospital or after their visit to the hospital.
3A resident of the Abandonment Project discussing strange events in the town, gossipping about neighbors or commenting on the effect of the hospital on the town.
4Custom Prompt (Please provide the context in your submission before the piece itself.)

* Please submit your pieces as a reply -OR- to TheAbandonmentProject@Gmail.com -OR- on Our Server's forum for Patient Files!

Established Lore:

Hollow Hill Psychiatric Hospital:

Completed on August 11th, 1938 - Hollow Hill Psychiatric Hospital became the beating heart of the town of Graystone. In its prime, the facility provided hundreds of jobs for the surrounding residents. Due to its sheer scale and a wide variety of practices, it also employed dozens of specialized doctors and researchers from around the world who had eventually settled in Graystone permanently. The opportunity was wide open for residents to take up work in nursing and assistant positions, as well as grounds keeping, maintenance, and other various labor jobs.

The hospital stood out against other asylums due to its proprietary research and drug trials in its early stages. While providing the most cutting-edge services and procedures, it also conducted experimental drug trials that were relatively successful. This carried on into the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Hollow Hill's patient roster grew so vast during its outpatient operation that it simply could not keep up with the demand, and ended its outpatient care operations per Director Aldrich's orders. Former outpatients went without care as current inpatients seemingly became imprisoned in the facility. The hospital doubled down on research and experimentation.

After some time and much criticism about the lack of transparency, Hollow Hill closed its doors to the public. The hospital focused entirely on research and development, presumably using the remaining patients as subjects. It is unknown what was actually developed in the hospital's late years, and the pressure from the public and various government and health agencies was building.

Rumors spread amongst residents of Graystone about the practices at Hollow Hill. Its public image had begun to degrade rapidly.

To break the silence in 1989, the hospital announced the suicide of Director Aldrich, among many other members of the hospital staff. All the horror and tragedy that took place in the hospital has driven residents out of the area with no intention of turning back. Occupants fled to neighboring towns and cities to start life anew. Once town officials began to head for the hills, Graystone had no government to interfere with its downfall.

Dear Mr. Barnaby,

As you know recently Doctor Collins has announced his resignation. However we are both aware of the problems that will arise if he makes it out. I promised to call him a taxi to take him to London at 9:00 AM. Do not let him leave the vicinity of the hospital. Mr. Barnaby do what you need to do, and keep Dr. Collins contained. When you are done bring him to quarantine. I will send Dr. Mills around with the serum. Afterwards I task you with keeping restrained until side effects wear off. The vacancies in room 39 or 40 will do nicely. Have another member of your security force guard him, though i doubt he will be petulant.

Director Aldrich

Dear Mr. Director,

I regret to inform you that I shall be stepping down from my position in your practice. I have found that it is in my best interest to move on from the practice of psychiatric medicine. I have been offered a spot at Berkshire and am obliged to take it. I thank you for the past months that I have worked here. I do hope that your work will continue to prosper. I will have left everything in good condition on the day of my departure.

Regards,
Dr. Alexander Collins

My dearest, Angelica,

Work at the hospital is most hectic. Just yesterday we had an all staff meeting in the auditorium. Taking note of my exceptional writing skills, the director had me take notes on the proceedings of the meeting. As of now, a few hours afterwards, I sit in my office writing idly to you, my wife. As much as I wish to retire to my bed, I have the first watch of the night and shall soon have to go. I have so much work to do.

Ever yours, Alexander

Doctor's notes:
April 3, 1937

Today was my first day on the job. Let me give you background info. I come from a rich American family of doctors. My parents wanted to send me to a nice medical school in London, and I was off. I was always a good student. The director recommended me to work in a psychiatric hospital as that was apparently the new thing. So I ended up here.
I was good at working with drugs, and being the most educated there, they put me in charge of the insulin manufacturing ward. We work hard and fast to keep up. It's quiet here. We work in silence with the occasional orderly coming in to get more syringes. You could hear the humm of the machinery. At the end of the day I walk out to my car and get in. I nod as the other doctors walk by. Its cold and the air smells of leaves. I start my car with a rumble and head out toward the bridge that will bring me to my apartment north of the hospital. I begin to think.

How did I end up here again? Well, I applied to a big hospital in London but they said they did not need more doctors, but they would need a replacement for a doctor in a few months. So I came here to work, keep myself active and earn some money. Heck, I don't need money. My parents have me covered.
I focus once again as my car pulls up to the big apartment my parents got me.

Letter of Termination
Dear Mrs. Vauller,

This letter is being written on behalf of the Hollow Hills Board of Directors. It is the formal notification that your suspension has been made indefinite.

You made it known in your last meet with Human Resources that you were aware of company policy. If there are three write ups in a one-year period, your performance would be carefully reviewed and termination was a possibility.

You have demonstrated an unfortunate lack of restraint in the duties of your position. Your manager has received multiple complaints from other employers who are uncomfortable working with you. You have shown a complete disregard for Hollow Hill's reputation, it's patients and your coworkers. Creating an extremely hostile environment, This is unacceptable.

Your last pay check will be sent to you by the end of the business day.

Best Regards,

Alfred Ziegel

Patient 0624 - Harold "The King" Johnson

The following documents tell the unfortunate story of Mr. Harold Edward Johnson, a poor schizophrenic man who was transferred to Hollow Hill Psychiatric Hospital in the year 1952. He was initially being treated in London, but an influx of patients meant that he had to be transferred. Mr. Johnson's delusions led him to believe that he was the first and only son of King George VI and that his true name was Edward, after the Kings brother. The following are the notes of Dr. Joseph Ferguson who was treating Mr. Johnson.

PATIENT ID: 0642
NAME: Johnson, Harold E.
DATE: 16-01-1952 10:46 AM
PHYSICIAN: Dr. Joseph Ferguson

The patient arrived today and thus far has been far less troublesome than our contemporaries in London reported. He has made threats of arrest and execution and only responds to "Prince" or "Prince Edward", but has otherwise not acted up. After consulting with Mr. Aldrich I've determined that electroshock therapy is the best possible way to treat these strange symptoms. I have hopes that by combining this with some reeducation we will be able to put an end to his illness.

ADDITION - 2:37 PM: After lunging at a nurse who refused to call him Prince, Mr. Johnson has been restrained with a straitjacket until further notice.

PATIENT ID: 0642
NAME: Johnson, Harold E.
DATE: 28-01-1952 07:12 AM
PHYSICIAN: Dr. Joseph Ferguson

The electroshock therapy appears to be working to some extent; Mr. Johnson has significantly cut down on his delusional statements although he has become increasingly violent. Luckily, our restraints have kept him under control. His struggling and attempts to break himself free have unfortunately led him to physically harm himself in some ways. Nothing major, just some cuts and bruises, surely nothing a few stitches and the passing of time can't fix. I'm hopeful for him and if we find a way to end his violent outbursts he could possibly return to some semblance of a normal life.

After a discussion with some of the night staff, it appears that Mr. Johnson has been acting up in the evening. According to them, he's been screaming about assassins and the likes. It's surely nothing, just delusions in the dark. I've asked for them to ensure his lights stay on in the night; he may lose some sleep, but at least he won't be screaming at the top of his lungs.

PATIENT ID: 0642
NAME: Johnson, Harold E.
DATE: 09-02-1952 02:15 PM
PHYSICIAN: Dr. Joseph Ferguson

Harold relapsed today upon hearing the news of the King's death. I did my best to keep lips shut around him, but with all of England in mourning it was only a matter of time. He has been hysteric all day, shouting about how it's his "time to ascend" and demanding we release him so that he may be coronated. Some imbecile told him Elizabeth is to become Queen and he has now begun screaming about how he'll have her killed. Unfortunately, his newfound violent tendencies were the one thing that stuck through his relapse. He escaped his restraints and stabbed an assistant in the eye with a nearby scalpel during his electroshock therapy. Instead of responding to Prince he now seems to prefer to be called King. This has become a right bloody mess, Mr. Aldrich believes we should pursue a lobotomy and I'm inclined to agree. We'll see if he calms down in the coming days but either way it's clear that a more extreme form of treatment is necessary.

PATIENT ID: 0642
NAME: Johnson, Harold E.
DATE: 13-02-1952 11:26 AM
PHYSICIAN: Dr. Joseph Ferguson

Mr. Johnson has not gotten any better within the last few days. He attempted to post a letter to the Queen herself, apparently laced with some dangerous drug he managed to steal from R&D. This final outburst has made it clear that a lobotomy is undoubtedly the best form of treatment for Mr. Johnson. It'll be performed as soon as possible to avoid any further incidents. Until then he's being guarded 24/7, we've essentially turned his room into a makeshift prison. I hate to have to keep a patient under such intense restraints but it's for his own good. His voice is horse from all the screaming but that hasn't stopped him from voicing his displeasure with his new living arrangements. "I'm the KING!", "I'll have your HEAD FOR THIS", etc. for hours on end. It's becoming bloody annoying. I know it's unprofessional for me to say this but... this lobotomy can't come soon enough.

PATIENT ID: 0642
NAME: Johnson, Harold E.
DATE: 15-02-1952 12:32 PM
PHYSICIAN: Dr. Joseph Ferguson

The lobotomy was only somewhat successful. Mr. Johnson is no longer rambling on about being King, but that's because he can barely form sentences. Similarly, he has stopped having violent outbursts but that's because he seems to have forgotten how to walk and function altogether.

Despite his body being in complete disrepair he still seems to believe he's the King. The only word he's been able to produce since the procedure is "King" and he's been saying it like a damn broken record. Besides that, the only other sound he's made is an off-pitch humming rendition of "Rule Britannia" which has terrified most of the nurses and assistants.

In his current state, I'm not quite sure what we can do with Mr. Johnson. I'll continue treatment as it was until we can come up with a plan that might be able to end with him returning to society.

Among the official notes there is a small piece of paper, seemingly misplaced. It reads the following...

Alice,

Harold has become a lost cause. Today for his electroshock therapy take him to room 12, the machine there has been malfunctioning so you can just turn it all the way up and put all the blame on it. Do it or I'll have your job. I don't want to do this any more than you do, but Harold has become too much of a burden.

Also, ensure he's comfortable. Give him the nice chair. Afterall... a King needs his throne.- Joseph

PATIENT ID: 0642
NAME: Johnson, Harold E.
DATE: 20-02-1952 05:30 PM
PHYSICIAN: Dr. Joseph Ferguson

An unfortunate incident occurred today. While Mr. Johnson was receiving his electroshock therapy the machine malfunctioned and he passed away as a result. Little is known about his lineage and as a result, we have nobody to inform of his death. By my request, he will be cremated and have his ashes spread outside Windsor Castle. I feel it's what he would've wanted. I can't help but feel remorse as I truly felt we were on the edge of a breakthrough with Mr. Johnson. It's so so sad. May his highness rest in peace.

Dear Mr. Aldrich;

The Commission has done an investigation to determine whether the proposed acquisition by Hollow Hills Healthcare Inc of Bowman Polio Disease Control Center may violate Section 7 of the Clayton Act or Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act.

Upon further review of this matter, it now appears that no further action is warranted by the Commission at this time. Accordingly, the investigation has been closed. This action is not to be constructed as a determination that a violation may not have occurred, just as a pendency of an investigation should not be constructed as a determination that a violation has occurred.

The Diary of Mrs. Susan G. Wilkerson

The following entries are the contents of a leather-bound diary found within a small house in Graystone. No remains were found of Mrs. Wilkerson and she is considered to be among the many who went missing due to the horrid events that occurred at the Hollow Hills Psychiatric Hospital.

August 3rd, 1938
Dear Diary,

It looks like they're almost done with that great big hospital just down the road. Oh man is it a sight to see, a great big beautiful building; if I didn't know any better I might think we have some old money millionaires moving into town... They say once it's open it'll provide all sorts of jobs... I hope dear old Georgie can find a job there, he so dearly needs it. Providing for the boys on one income is becoming a struggle, and if he doesn't find somewhere to work soon I'm afraid I'll have to take on a second job next to the flower shop. It's terrible, I mean I hear the neighbors gossip everyday about how George Wilkerson needs his wife to provide for him. They call him a drunk, a waste, a poor father. I just hope that this hospital might turn things around for us...

August 25th, 1938
Dear Diary,

Today I got the most amazing news! Georgie nailed the job as a janitor down at Hollow Hills. He starts now while they're setting up, but he'll only be working once a month. They say he'll be working more once some of the real work begins in December. I'm so excited, especially with our boy Tom going into his senior year we'll need to save up some money for college. It seems as though things are finally falling into place for us here in the Wilkerson household! There's a bake sale down out the elementary school later this week and I just can't wait to show off my new brownie recipe. Georgie says he just can't get enough of it, and I know that prude Emily will be in envy when I'm the one bringing in the cash this year. Oh, I'm just so excited for the future!

There are many pages missing from the book here, bits of paper can be seen along the seam as though they were ripped out. Perhaps because the entries harbored fond memories, or perhaps because the memories were too horrid to bear. The truth may never be known.

October 15th, 1940
Dear Diary,

I'm starting to worry about how late they work Georgie over at the hospital. Sure, it pays the bills, but it's a terrible thing to only share a bed with your husband on the weekends. I know the night shift is needed and all, and the work they are doing over there is supposed to be so amazing! Ugh, I sound selfish don't I? I should be happy for Georgie, finally holding down a job! I mean it's been over a year, the last time he had a job for this long was before we even moved! Oh... I just miss him I suppose. The family had benefitted from the job though, Tom has enough saved for college, and he's been busy applying to so many schools! Billy has all sorts of new outfits for school, geez I feel like he just grows out of them so fast these days... I can't help but worry about Tom though, he signed up for some draft. Something about the war, the politicians are worried that we might get dragged in. I know he'll be fine and there's no way we're going to war anytime soon... I just worry for my sweet sweet boy.

January 21st, 1941Dear Diary,

I still worry for Georgie. I don't know if it's the long hours that I need to worry about though. It's not that he's tired or anything, but he's been just acting so strange and the way he describes the hospital... Oh it's just so terrible! I talked to him about it the other night when he told me he couldn't sleep and he just described such horrid things... bloody screams in the black of night, people begging for help, and worst of all the fact that he just has to ignore it! I know they're crazy, that's why they're there, but I just can't help and worry about the toll that this is all taking on my poor Georgie. He seems as though he isn't the same man he used to be... I don't mean the drunkard or the man people gossiped about, but the man I married! The old happiness I used to see in him seems to be just slowly drifting away... Then again, maybe it's just the stories of war we've been hearing from Europe. It's so terrible the things they say are happening over there; I couldn't imagine what I would do if Tom were to be called over. But I know they're already beginning to call boys from the draft, it's scary knowing your son could be called to serve. Things seemed so happy just a few short months ago... yet here I am, filled with worry once more. Then again, Papa always said I was a worrier. I know things will be alright... they always are... aren't they?

Another section of the diary appears to be missing here. Marks of all sorts of wear can be seen on half ripped and water-damaged pages. There is a strong, musty smell in the diary that one might associate with spilled beer and it's clear from the messy writing on the following pages that Mrs. Wilkerson has entered a more panicked state and possibly a darker period of her life.

TOM!tOMtom
They STOLE my BABY! Those bastards they say he's going to SERVE HIS COUNTRY!! They ought to call it what it is: A DEATH SENTENCE! They're just gonna let him be executed by a GERMAN or some JAPENESE sonofabitch!!

I don't know what I'll do without Tom, Billy has been sobbing for hours. Georgie barely reacted to the news! I talked to the director of the hospital, Mr. Aldrich, he said that it sounds like George might have picked something up from one of the patients and they'd be willing to treat him for free. I know Georgie would hate it, but it might be for the best. He describes things as though they're getting worse and worse there... I don't know what's real and what might just be his imagination. The other day he said he saw someone screaming as they had a needle pushed through their eye! And last month he said he saw a patient slamming his head into the wall until he bled! It sounds so terrible, almost too terrible to be true... He barely sleeps anymore too... and the fact that he barely reacted to the fact that his eldest son is being sent off TO WAR?!? It's just not him anymore... I just don't know how I'll let him know. What can I do? Just tell him over dinner that I'm having him committed?!? Oh and what will the neighbors say! Then again they might not notice with all the horror that's been happening lately... sometimes I wonder why this all happens to us. What did I ever do to deserve having my son shipped across the sea? To deserve having to watch my huband go insane?!? Life is so unfair...

Silly me, I forgot to date my entry.- February 2nd, 1942 -

April 4th, 1942Dear Diary,

I told Georgie... He went berserk. He started screaming about how he won't go and how he's seen what they do to people there. The old man really has gone insane... I just hope they're able to help him. He stormed off, probably headed to waste the last of what we saved up for Tom at the bar. Mr. Aldrich seems to really want the best for us... he's such a kind man in such a cruel world. Of course, Georgie doesn't agree... whenever I bring him up he says I'm the president of "that man's" fan club and that he's a terrible and cruel person. He seemed to be getting so much better just for this place to ruin him. I don't know what to think of that hospital anymore... is Georgie really insane? I know he's a drunk but my husband has never been one to fabricate stories... I just wish I could see things through his eyes.

No... He's insane, I know this. Bernard said so and he runs the place! I don't know what I'm thinking doubting myself. Georgie will get better there, I know it.

Tom has been sending letters. It makes the fact that he was ripped from us hurt just a little less. He hasn't actually had to go out and fight yet, but apparently the training has been tough on him. I'm still so worried, so angry, I don't know what I'll do if I lose him. Georgie is essentially gone, he isn't himself anymore... I don't know if I could bear losing Tom as well. Poor Billy has had to watch this all. I just hope that with all this struggle he might become stronger. Maybe, just maybe, it'll benefit him later in life.

The following page has small spots of water damage, it's clear that Mrs. Wilkerson must have been sobbing as she wrote this entry. The entry is updated, but the contents make it clear it was soon after the previous one.

GEORGIE! MY GEORGIE IS GONE!
Thəy found him iη the generator room... I knew it was bad when he didn't come back from the bar but I never could've imagined this... MY GEORGIE! It's all my fault! I never should've gone with this... I shouldn't have told him like that... I did so many things wrong! And now I have to tell Billy and Tom! OH GOD Tom will have to find out his father went and KILLED HIMSELF through a letter! What kind of mother... what kind of wife have I become?!? WIll Billy blame me? He wouldn't be wrong if he did...

NO NO no nO This wasn't MY fault... This is because of that DAMN hospital. They did this to Georgie. They DID it wasn't me NO it wasn't me...

This just doesn't feel real... my sweet, sweet Georgie please come back

please

Many following pages are illegible and were clearly written in a drunken stupor. The final entry of the diary sticks out as it is marked by a small letter. The contents of both the letter as well as the final entry are as follows.

WASHINGTON DC 234 PM 10-10-1942
SUSAN G. WILKERSON

THE SECRETARY OF WAR DESIRES ME TO EXPRESS HIS DEEPEST REGRET THAT YOUR SON PVT TOM B. WILKERSON WAS KILLED IN ACTION ON THE EIGHTH OF NOVEMBER IN CASABLANCA. IF FURTHER INFORMATION IS FOUND YOU WILL BE INFORMED. PLEASE DO NOT TELL OTHERS OF HIS WHEREABOUTS TO PREVENT POSSIBLE AID TO OUR ENEMIES.H.A. ULIOTHE ADJUTANT GENERAL
November 10th, 1942Dear God,

My husband and my eldest son now join you in your heavenly kingdom. And soon we will too. I know all things happen for a reason, you took them for a reason. I know that the only way Billy will be safe is if he comes with me and is cradled in the arms of God. We are coming, oh sweet Lord. Let Georgie and sweet Tom know that we are coming! We will be there soon, I swear my love! I can't wait to feel your warm embrace, oh sweet Lord. I know I have sinned... I know that I have done terrible, lustful things with Mr. Aldrich but deep down I know you will forgive me for I am now a loyal servant of you, my Lord! I will see you so soon... so so soon.

This final entry was written a day before the disappearance of Susan and Billy Wilkerson. They were never found.

To the Householders,
Government Evacuation Order
Under the above Order the Council will be responsible for the reception of a number of persons from the evacuation areas. For this purpose they will have the necessary powers under the 'Civil Defense Act' and the 'Emergency Powers Regulations' for billeting these persons on the Householders in the district who will be required under penalties to receive them.

It must, however be made clear that, whilst the Council will do their best to avoid hardship to householders they will be bound to fulfill the obligations which a nation-wide emergency of the nature contemplated would involve, and the fact that a householder may be unwilling to receive persons under the Government Scheme, or may not have made arrangements for using his house in other ways, cannot be accepted as a valid reason for declining to take a fair share of the obligations arising under an emergency of this nature.

The Council may find it necessary to take over vacant properties and also properties where the Occupier has vacated but left furnished.

DATE: 4/03/38
Letter of Reprimand
This is an official written reprimand for your failure to perform the functions of your position appropriately to safeguard the confidential knowledge you have acquired regarding the incident on March 27th, 1938, Revealing confidential information that was shared to you is a violation of the Confidentiality rights towards the Patient(s) and Staff alike.

It is also a breach of your expected and entrusted security role. In fact, even if the employee(s) have not specified that the information regarding the incident was not confidential, discussing employee business with an outside influence, under any circumstances, is a failure on your part to perform your expected role. The severity of your actions justifies the disciplinary action that could lead to employment termination.

Further diligence in carrying out your responsibilities is required for the future. Another breach of our confidence in your ability to carry out any of your expected roles will result in additional disciplinary action up to and including the possibility of employment termination.

My Response:

From: ADMINISTRATION
Priority: Critical
To: Alfred Ziegel
CC: Director Bernard Aldrich
Re: Dr. Anna Vauller Failure to Uphold Non-Disclosure & Patient Confidentiality Agreements

Alfred,
I regret to inform you that I will have no choice but to overstep your authority and enforce a mandatory termination of Dr. Anna Vauller, as she has recklessly breached the facility's ZERO-TOLERANCE policy against the sharing of potentially compromising information. As you know, the Hollow Hill Research Facility is in its infancy and our benefactors will tolerate absolutely NO insubordinate behavior by any staff members.

You should also be made aware of our legal department's intentions to pursue practical and legal recourse against Dr. Anna Vauller to remedy this situation. The leaking of this information could potentially be detrimental to the integrity of our work here. The Board of Psychiatry & Psychiatric Medicine will be submitting an official affidavit regarding the incident, and will also advocate for the removal of Dr. Vauller's license to practice.

Unfortunately, we do not believe that this alone will prevent further unwanted transparency. The board will also be pursuing criminal repercussions against Dr. Vauller and will recommend a 2-year inpatient monitoring program where the facility will retain the ability to protect vital information and evaluate Dr. Vauller's credibility.

Mr. Ziegel, if you have any concerns regarding the board or facility's response, please do not hesitate to reach out to your appointed board representative.

Best regards,
ADMINISTRATOR #3

(the following is an inspection report filed a few months before the opening of the asylum)

05/14/37

Dear Mr. Richardson

After a long and thorough inspection of Hollow Hills Hospital by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on behalf of the department of health and human services, I am pleased to announce that your facility has met and exceeded expectations on all fronts.

I am impressed by the role both you and your staff have exercised taken in successfully raising your ward's ambition in improving the lives of your patients, as well as the extensive measurements you personally have taken in securing the best possibility for recovering said patients, these steps taken include the following:

  • New forms of neurological shock therapy used to help minimize lost senses related to nerve damage.

  • An extensive vetting process to find only the most medically ambitious promising doctors and nurses across the Country.

  • The astonishing attention to detail put into the facility (both inside and out) to suit the needs of staff and patients alike.

I am therefore proud to announce that Hollow Hills has hereby passed it's final inspection and is ready to be open to the public and is permitted to be used as a mental facility of at least 120 occupants as well as up to 30 staff members upon the first of November, 1937. The number of patients, however, can change depending on the circumstances that some unmarked rooms may be used to accommodate more patients.

With Best Regards;

Inspector Treblinka
