Theres been alot of misconception behind the DMCA on craftbukkit, so I'm here to tell you the latest up-to-date correct news about it.
First off, Mojang owning craftbukkit has to do with this! So heres some background info you'll need to know before I tell ya the good stuff. Warren A.K.A EvilSeph was the head developer of craftbukkit before he handed it over to Mojang. Wesley Wolfe, A.K.A. Wolverness also worked on craftbukkit. Now, lets start our story at the release of 1.8. So, only a few hours after craftbukkit for 1.8 was released, the craftbukkit download page turned into:
The link linked to a text page that said the following text:
TL;DR, Wesley Wolfe, one of the people who worked on craftbukkit, just filed a copyright claim on craftbukkit and he succeced on taking it down.
Mojang, the current owner of craftbukkit and the creator of minecraft, will probably not talk about this until their lawyers are ready.
Breaking news! I found something from a spigot forum that explains alot!

Chief Operating Officer, Vu Bui, responded with the clear text:
Mojang has not authorized the inclusion of any of its proprietary
Minecraft software (including its Minecraft Server software) within the
Bukkit project to be included in or made subject to any GPL or LGPL
license, or indeed any other open source license
As the Minecraft Server software is included in CraftBukkit, and the
original code has not been provided or its use authorized, this is a
violation of my copyright. I have a good faith belief the distribution of
CraftBukkit includes content of which the distribution is not authorized by
the copyright owner, it's agent, or the law.

With the facts that we have available, it seems that Wolverness and any of the Craftbukkit developers not hired by Mojang deserve to seek damages from Mojang.
