I bet that everybody of you have made a pickaxe of wood, just to mine 3 cobble so that you can make a stone one. Isnt it annoying that you have to use important resources just to use them for 5 seconds? Well at least i think that it is unnecessary. So i have thought about a block that could do something with this little, but annoying problem. It is only limited to string, stone and wood, because otherwise it would be too easy to exploit.
I call it "The Recycle Block"

- An explanation of how it works
- Different situations it can be useful
- A few design ideas
- Conclusion
An Explanation
So basically my idea was that if you craft a wooden pickaxe or shovel or any other tool, you could just place that tool in the recycle block. Then, you could be able to get the resources you used, back!
If the tool is over half in durability you get all of the resources back, but if it under half, you would just get some of the materials back. Also, if you get a bow or weapons from a mob, you could also be able to recycle them to get the original resources. As easy as that!
Different Situations
As the one i mentioned before, using up 2 sticks and 3 wood planks just to mine for 5 seconds, isnt really worth it. Same with all the other tools or weapons. Recycle it!
You could also use it on a fishing rod if you badly need the string to make wool or a bow.
Pretty much, you can kinda skip backwards, if you regret on your crafting or decision.
Design Ideas
My ideas arent really that great, but ive thought out 3 possibly usable designs.
The first idea is a workbench, just with a dark green cover and without the tools on the side. You can refer it to a small green dumpster with a crafting square on top.
The second idea is a black or dark grey box with some yellow stripes that goes sideways on the for sides. On top, there should be a little hole, and a red button on the side of it. The hole is for putting and receiving the materials or tools, and the button is basically to activate it.
My third idea is more naturalistic and looks more easy to build. It is a wooden brown block with a 2x2 route sheet on the left, and a 4x4 route sheet on the right. The 2x2 is for placing the tool or armor or anything you want to recycle. The 4x4 is for picking up the resources. It would also have some tools on the side.
Conclusion
Now for last im just going to go through the main aspects of this idea.
First, the idea is to get back some of the resources you have spent.
Only string, stone and wood, beause otherwise it would be to easy to exploit.
Second, you can use it to regret or step backwards on stupid decisions or wasting of resources.
And for last, there can be a lot of interesting designs of the block, and its only your imagination that places your limits!

I hope i get to be a finalist and i hope that you judges like it^^
