Hello, my name is Ideal_Logic. And this is my story of the server, ForgottenRealms.
This is a true story, from long long ago, before endermen, before creative mode, even before pistons. It dates back in the early days of the Minecraft beta. This is a story of the perfect server.
Before we move on to this, I want to ask a favor for all those who read this. If you find any value in this story, please share it with your friend, comment on it, and please, do diamond. I want this story to be known. I want this to be a reference for people wanting to start, or improve a server. This can't be done if it doesn't get help being noticed.
That being said, let us move on with the story.
This was a few years back, and Minecraft was still in its early beta. I had just picked up the game, and I wanted to play online with my good friend, headcrabninja, who is my best friend, regardless whether or not I've met him in real life yet. I scouted out what type of servers there were, and to see what we wanted, and we decided to pick a new server that's simply vanilla with little to no people. We found one here on Planet Minecraft, called ForgottenRealms.
We joined and we spawned on top of tree tops on top of a tall mountain. We ended up having to jump down to a lake to start. We met other players and we worked together. I ended up building a hotel, constantly asking my friends to supply me with coal, wood, and stone. Eventually, I was granted permission of admin, and was pretty stoked at the time. I started building the second level to my hotel.
Unfortunately, I had to get off at that point, leaving the second level unlit, and when I came back, headcrabninja explained to me that it had to be condemned and tore down due to a large number of mobs spawning inside. So I started building a new home, which would end up being the home I build for every world from then on forth, even to today.
We recruited two new admins, a man named Thomas, and my own friend headcrabninja. And I even met two friends that I still love today, KarmaBear and MrMoodles. The server started to grow it's own community, having an average of 20 players online. Keep in mind, we didn't have all the plugins and precautions for server management and rule enforcement we do today. Chests couldn't be locked, and griefing wasn't easy to rollback, area protection was new, buggy, and hard to use. If there was an issue about anything, an admin was needed.
Since I was an admin, and was on quite often, I was turned to the most, and I had to make many choices. I loved my job though. I was praised, by everyone in the community we had. I was even given co-ownership of the server as a status by the owner, dcapatos. I started managing what plugins we used, and how to set up groups and permissions. Everyone knew me, and always asked for me. Anyways, the reason I believe I was praised so much for is because I actively played with the community, help them progress, opened a trade store for them, and always compensated them for any losses from unfortunate circumstances. If a griefer stole their belongings, and destroyed their house, I would do my best to get it back, punish those who caused the grief, and help them rebuild by hand.
We may have been small, but the server was easy for new players to join, good for consistent members, and had a great staff. It was a server I could actually call home. Met great friends I still play with today.
But you know what they say... "All good things must come to an end....."
The server never ran on a dedicated server, and never asked for donations, or had a system of actually economic income. It was being run on dcapatos's personal computer. He eventually gave up on maintaining the server. ...And I had lost my home.....
Over a year later, I got a message here on PMC, from a user, PinoyDevil. PinoyDevil was one of the members of the community of ForgottenRealms. He asked me what happened to the server. ...I cried..... To think that a game could build such a strong sub-community in it's beta, even for how small it was... It was unfathomable for me..... All the memories rushed back into me mind, and craved for the feelings and sense of community ever since.
Do this day, I wander from server to server in my free time... Looking for the server that will replace ForgottenRealms... A new place I can call home within the Minecraft community. But everywhere I go, I either see a server, that will not last, is two bloated with a large player base, is too obsessed with mini-games and plugins, or is just some person's source of income through donations and limitations.....
I have yet find one server that is anywhere near as joyous as ForgottenRealms..... And I have come to the resolve that I may never find it..... No one has had a server, that I have seen, with such a strong community, and with as friendly staff, and offered all of it at no cost. ForgottenRealms had so few griefers, and didn't need any plugins or mini games to entice the users to come. We never even needed any anti-grief systems. One admin was enough to deal with all of the server's affairs.
ForgottenRealms may have been the best server to ever exist within the Minecraft community...
That is my story.
If you have found a server to call home, then I am truly happy for you. And for all you other admins, and server owners, take this as a challenge. A challenge to build your own sub-community as strong as ForgottenRealms.
I want to ask that no one advertise a server in the comments, and that if you wish to share the server you can call home, I'll allow it. There is a difference between advertising and sharing. Advertising is to entice players for benefit, while sharing is to simply offer it for others, with no intentions for anything but to bring the same feelings it brought you to others.
I just noticed this blog made it on the header feed. I feel good knowing it's a well done blog, even without fancy BB code or images. And I want to encourage you all more to comment and diamond. It helps this story get around to other people a lot. And the more positive feedback I get, the more things I might share from projects, to skins, to more blogs. Again, thank you all. The attention this story has been receiving has truly lifted my spirits.

Anyway, here's a diamond for your tragic tale of a server lost to the world.......
Anyways, that's how I would go around it.
Anyways, cutting this string of replies off. Getting too long for my tastes.
But after about 7 months of losing money and players, I revamped and started afresh. I now own an awesome grief-free server with a great community! :D (Factions is not the way to go >.<). Its almost exactly like the one that you called home.. Heck.. One of my players is so dedicated.. He has spent 5 days on the server in the last 1 1/2 weeks… o.o I even have some really nice staff! :D I won't advertise or anything here. Just saying that there are many of these little servers out there, and all you have to do is look hard enough. ;)
