Long ago, there lived a kind and gentle fisherman named Urashima Tarō. One day, while walking along the beach, he noticed a group of boys tormenting a small sea turtle. Urashima rushed over and saved the turtle, releasing it back into the sea.
The next day, while fishing, he saw an unusually large turtle approaching his boat. To his surprise, it spoke, saying it was the very turtle he had saved. As a reward, it invited him to the Dragon Palace (Ryūgū-jō), the underwater palace of the sea princess, Otohime.
Urashima rode the turtle deep into the ocean to the beautiful palace, where Princess Otohime greeted him with lavish feasts and festivities. Days turned into weeks, and Urashima lost track of time in this dreamlike world.
Eventually, he felt homesick and asked the princess to let him return home. She granted his wish but gave him a mysterious box, called a tamatebako, warning him to never open it.
When he returned to his village, everything was different. People looked at him with curiosity, and he didn’t recognize anyone. He soon discovered that hundreds of years had passed since he’d left. Overwhelmed, he opened the box—and with a flash, he aged into an old man, turning into dust and disappearing into the wind.
This story serves as a cautionary tale about the mysterious nature of time and fate and the consequences of curiosity and longing for what’s left behind.
