Gossamer dew and trees of old
Gaze upon a tragic wonder
The sun refused to shine its light
As land was torn asunder
At half-past nine the clouds rolled in
And blotted out the sky
The ground rumbled from the thunder
And the air began to cry
The entire world turned black as coal
As lightning lashed its light
It showed a fort against the sea
And two armies ready to fight
The fort in the rock was ages old
Carved masterfully into the tor
These men were equipped to fight
And were prepared to go to war
The men in the tor were ready
And the army they faced weren’t shaken
For if they were to rule this land
The fort in the rock must be taken
---------------------
The invaders rolled down the mountain
And the defenders sallied out the gates
To meet on the beaches between them
An invitation for death and the fates
--------------------
Hell and hail fell upon the sand
Soon to be swelled by the blood of the damned
Fate and fury meet in a fiery dance
And the clash of steel breaks their trance
Death and life laid bare on the field
Neither side prepared to yield
Sword met shield, arrow met neck
The dead await the carrion peck
Til the horns were called, both sides retreat
To lick their wounds, but neither beat
---------------------
The defenders went back to the tor
Their numbers still counted high
Their position of victory seemed secure
Oblivious to their death being nigh
---------------------
The enemy army had taken heavy losses
And threw their caution to the sky
In an act of barbary shameful to men
They just wanted their enemy to die
There was a lake high above the beach
Flushed high with the falling rain
They blew the dam to hell and back
And sent the water down on the plain
---------------------
The fort in the tor was ready for mammon
But instead came a roar like that of a cannon
From up the mountain flowed a deadly wave
Killing men in its frothy white rave
Sand was torn from out of the beach
Thrown back into the sea’s cold reach
The tor was torn from the ground asunder
And shifted with a sound like thunder
It was sent to the deeps, and there it lay
A testament to the horrors it saw that day
---------------------
The commander of the invaders stood
And surveyed the chaos down below
He turned to address his men
His voice cracked and slow
“We have defeated our enemy dishonorably
Now even the tor has fled
The rock has been reclaimed by the sea
May it sit to remember the dead”
---------------------
The seas claimed the fort
The shallows sink in rising tide
That never seems to go out
Fact becomes mystery, mystery becomes myth
And the years fly like days
Now, nothing remains of the land
But the sea has the tor
