How to Spruce up a Server
As the co-owner of a fairly big server, I know what it’s like to have dull moments on a server. It’s something that I’ve just come to expect after a while. Not all servers can have 50 people on it 24/7. There are also bursts of activity- generally on weekends, holidays, and evenings. To help improve the level of activity on a server, here are some suggestions I have come up with to attract new players and give the loyal server community something fun to do.
PvP Tournament
This is a really simple event you can run on any servers, though it works better on survival and community servers. Whether it’s held in an arena, staged in one-versus-one matches, or just a total free-for-all, PvP can be a fun time for everybody.
To hold a successful PvP event, I suggest having some sort of arena. It doesn’t have to be a fancy architectural wonder. It should just have some sort of arena boundaries and starting locations for all contestants.
Building Competition
Building contests are great events to host, too. Our usual build contest lasts usually 1-2 weeks, but attracts players to come on, and keep coming back. We have a nice flat-map, set up in creative mode. Through GriefPrevention it is set up that players cannot build unless they claim land first, and land claims are disabled for non-ops. This prevents them from flying off and doing whatever. All of the different sizes of contest plots are admin claimed through GriefPrevention, and subdivided through /subdivideclaims. For the build contest, we pick a theme and we announce the contest's start, trust players to their plots, and let them build. It tends to draw in a lot of players.
PvE Event
A PvE event is a good way to bring everybody in the server together to work as a whole for a bigger cause. On our server, we have done a crusade to the End in a team. We have also done some mob hunts in groups. If you have MultiVerse (or a similar plugin) pull up a new map and let everybody work together in a limited map space until they find the Stronghold and quest for the End.
Minigames
Minigames are a fun thing to do on a server. If you want to get everybody playing together for a night, try to play some minigames. Spleef is always a good and simple game to set up. Thread the Needle is also a good one to play, as well as combat minigames like Lava Wall, Defend the Villagers, Capture the Flag, and the like. It’s best if you can set it up on your server, with plugins or command blocks, to have the minigames be self-running and not require staff’s assistance. That way, players can play at any time and not need to bother staff to help them.
Hunger Games
Hunger Games maps are a long-standing trend in the world of Minecraft servers, but they are quite popular. If you are a server with MultiVerse, it works very well to either download or make your own Survival Games map, and run Hunger Games as a special event on your server.
These events may not work for everybody. If your server is already really large, it might be too hectic to try to host events. Maybe you already offer many of these things 24/7. This is just a list of suggestions on how to spruce up a server that seems to be in a dull point. This is exactly what we did, and now we’re busier than we have ever been.
I wish you all the best of luck in your server endeavors, and hope that you never have a dull moment!
