We all have that one person in our lives, normally a grandma, who makes us feel so good, buys us random little presents and always feeds us too much when we go to their house. For me this was my cousin Elizabeth, or as everyone called her, Auntie Bess.

I never had a grandma growing up because both my parent’s parents died before i was born or shortly after, before i could get to know them, so for me, Auntie Bess was the best thing. She was caring, always remembered my birthday and would always send mail to us with little trinkets and random things just because she loved us. I wasn’t her only “niece”, she had a lot of cousins that looked at her in this way.

She had always had a bad back and knee and had to walk with a cane ever since i could remember. One day she took a bad fall off her bed and ended up in the hospital. After much care she was put into an old people home so that she could get around the clock help. This didn’t stop her from sending us things and always being there for us.

Like every teen does as they are growing up, i started to stop visiting her and started to kinda forget about everything she had done for me. After 2 years of being in the care place, she took another fall and was placed in the hospital for good. This was when i really started to feel about about not visiting her.

I went to visit her as soon as she got to the hospital, gave her love, and we had fun despite the fact that she was lying in a hospital bed. After that, i didn’t go visit her. My mom told me i should really go and see her because her health was really going down, but i still decided to hang with my friends and screw around on the internet instead.

One day after much consideration, i decided id go see her the next day. My mom had been telling me how she isn't going to be there for that much longer and that i should really go see her, so i decided i would. My mom had been going every single day so she knew everything that was happened so i figured if she says that, i should really go.

That night when my mom came home she called me into her room and gave me the news. Auntie Bess has passed that night while she was there. I instantly broke down and my mom was kinda confused as to why i was that upset. I explained to her that i was planning on going tomorrow to see her before it was too late, but it seems, that it was too late.

The moral of this long and sad story is to cherish the people you have around you that make you feel good about yourself and make you feel happy because you don’t know what could happen between today and tomorrow.
