Hello PMC. This has been a topic I've been thinking about for a while, and figured this would be a good time to write about it. Why? It's my one-year anniversary since I started skinning! I can barely believe it's been this long. Looking back at my oldest skins, I realize how far I've come and I feel grateful for the recognition I've got here at PMC.
Unfortunately, it seems there are many people here at PMC who do not feel the same way. I've seen more than a few disparaging comments made towards 'high level' or 'well-known' skinners (or textures, builders, etc) at PMC. Frustrated at their own lack of success, sometimes people will try to place the blame on people who have achieved success. Jealousy, if you will. My response to this is, and always has been, 'we all started out as noobs'. Leostereo didn't just fall out the heavens with a great gift for skinning and texturing. I didn't just start up MCSkin3D one day and crank out an amazing skin. It's taken me a year and over a hundred skins to get to where I am now, and I still have big room for improvements.
Don't believe me? Well, in honor of my anniversary, I remade one of my very first skins. This is a skin for my bf, a rugged adventurer. When remaking it, I tried to keep the details the same (minus the sweater) while still updating the shading and coloring.
What a difference, huh? So, to everyone who feels discouraged looking at a skin from me or any other 'well-known' skinner, take a good look! I was right there with you. I used noise and had no idea how to shade. My colors looked ugly. I used very simple faces. But, I practiced. I can't guarantee you'll be the next Leostereo. Hell, I can't even guarantee you'll ever get more than a few diamonds on a skin. But I can guarantee that if you practice, you will improve. And, at the end of the day, that should be your ultimate goal.
I hope with this blog I can inspire you to revisit some of your old works and see how much you've improved! Always work towards learning new skills, and don't worry if there are people who are better than you. In real life there will always be someone who is better than you, but that doesn't mean you should ever feel discouraged.
