There is only one more week in 2015. Everything has been winding down to this, and with only one week left to review, we can only wonder what will win it all. But, in the meantime, let's get started with the penultimate week of 2015.
Warning! The best structure of the week may appear to be terraforming. But, upon closer inspection, you might very well be surprised. And that’s because the best structure of the week is Mornegivre - City of Night, created by LanguageCraft.
This is a simple city-BUT WAIT; THERE’S A TWIST! Mornegivre is elegantly concealed amidst a vast tundra mountain range, covered in towering evergreens. The architecture is jagged, layered, and covered in a sprinkling of snow. The effect of which, renders the entire city camouflaged.
And it is this seamless transition, from rock to residence, that makes Mornegivre so special. The structures perfectly compliment the terraforming, and vice versa. It’s a complete idea that makes maximal use of both categories, and juxtaposes them in a unique and thought provoking way.
And, as if the surface wasn’t impressive enough, LanguageCraft also put a lot of effort into the decor and smaller details within the city. The texture pack suits this build well, and the range of materials is quite impressive, especially for a project of this scale.
It’s easy to get lost in the finer details here, but it’s when you step back and look at the project as a whole that it becomes more than just a collection of houses. In fact, it’s a stunning display of colors and textures that take rustic architecture to a whole new level.
And just as this week’s structure bore a semblance to terraforming, this week’s terraforming bore a semblance to organic work. I know, it’s confusing, but bear with me. The best terraforming of the week is Roselia Sanctuary, created by Destiny Gene.
At first glance, you might think that this project is a rose. But, in fact, this is actually a swirling maelstrom of desert rock, and grassland hills. It’s relatively simple terraforming, but it’s used in a clever and inspiring way.
Much like Mornegivre, Roselia Sanctuary is something that you have to view from a distance to really appreciate it. The red, winding mountain ranges are positioned in such a way that they evoke a perception of depth and layering. It’s a pretty cool illusion that turns a relatively normal biome into something more.
And, similarly, the grassland at the bottom of the map takes on a spongy, wrinkled texture, due to the positioning of the peaks and crevices. This, combined with the upper portion, creates the uncanny appearance of a fresh-picked rose, gloriously realized through the power of terraforming.
It’s landscaping like this that really pushes the boundaries of what programs like WorldPainter and World Machine can be used to achieve. Sometimes terraforming can be more than just an environment. With proper vision and skill, it can be used as a means to create illustrations and forms of all kinds.
The best organic work of the week, on the other hand, is not of an illusory nature. It’s a pure, simple, and (most importantly) epic piece of 3D art called Organic Dragon - Lost in the Frost, by IceRock_.
What we have here is a rather large dragon, trotting along beside a castle and sporting an array of vast sails mounted on its back. Why does this dragon have sails, you ask? Does it provide increased aerodynamic qualities? Or did some malevolent god staple them to the dragon’s back as some kind of cruel joke or punishment? Who cares; it looks epic as hell.
Whether or not there’s some kind of prevailing theme or metaphor here remains to be seen. I don’t know what this build means, but I do know that it’s a spectacular organic figure if I’ve ever seen one. The dragon sports some vibrant color patterns, masterfully crafted appendages, and an impressive wingspan.
And, as well, the structures are a great counterpoint to the organic work, and create a very unique and intriguing scene to be puzzled over. What I do know for sure is that this build is very captivating. It may be a little bit crazy, but hey, sometimes you have to forgo sanity to capture the community’s attention.
Thank you for reading! Hope you guys enjoyed this week, and I look forward to bringing you the final review of the year, followed by the first ever episode of Year in Review! See you guys then.
