What Grinds My Gears; Minecraft Roleplaying (A RANT)

Usually everyday I got to ItsJerryAndHarry's server and play on their creative. I see a lot of "TPA FOR A HIGHSCHOOL ROLEPLAY!, "TPA FOR A FOXS VS. WOLFS RP! NEED BOYS!" and various other similar stuff. Now, I've been open-minded to roleplaying, and I decided to try one. Now, when you have been roleplaying for about 5 years now, you get used to a certain set of rules. But Minecraft roleplays blow them completely out of the water. There's a lot of things that bothers me, and I want to get it off my chest here.

1. Power-playing

Power playing is when you type up the actions of another character. Let's take a look at an example.

RPer 1:

(Shadow) *growls at approaching wolf*

RPer 2:

(Light) Hello there! *shadow howls a hello*

It's pretty clear that RPer1 didn't intend for Shadow to be friendly with Light. But RPer2 has taken complete control of Shadow's actions. In this example Shadow is acting completely out of character, but let's take a look at another possible response by RPer2 that is also an example of power playing.

RPer 2:
(Light) Hello there! *shadow attacks light* What the heck?

Again, RPer2 has taken complete control. Is this what Shadow would have done in the situation? It certainly seems more in character than the first example. But itdoesn'tmatter if this is accurate to how Shadow would react or not. The problem in both examples is that RPer2 has taken all options away from RPer1 as to how their character will respond.
2. God-modding

As it sounds, god modding is when your character becomes all powerful or all knowing.
RPer 1:
(Shadow) *sees a bear coming to attack him*

RPer 2:
(Light) Shadow! *attacks and kills bear* You alright?

RPer2 seems to have had good intentions (wanting to save Shadow), but Light's actions make very little sense. A single wolf is unlikely to be able to take down a bear, and would certainly not be able to do so easily and without injury. By coming in and suddenly making everything better all of the drama was taken out of the situation.

Your character should not be able to deflect every blow in battle (unless there is some massive difference in the two character's experience and strength). This is especially true if nothing in your bio in the beginning has indicated that your character is a skilled fighter. After a severe wound your character should not be instantly better and full of energy.

God modding doesn't just apply to physical actions. It can apply to knowledge as well. Here's another example;

RPer1:
(Shadow) Leave me alone.

RPer2:
(Light) *laughs because she always knows what to say* No you don't!

As this seems to be the first time these characters have met, there is really no way that Light should be aware of Shadow's deep personal feelings or his seemingly complicated past. All she should know is that he seems guarded and wants to be alone. Keep in mind that while you, the player, may know a lot about other characters on the site, that knowledge does not transfer to your characters. You can read a character's bio and get insight into their thoughts and feelings. Your character's knowledge is limited to their interactions with the other character.

Your character should not be able to see through every lie they are told or instantly know when others are in trouble. Keep in mind the strengths and weaknesses of your character, as well as those of other characters. If a character you meet has a talent of being a good liar, then it's less likely that your character will pick up on it. If your character is too trusting they might believe lies that aren't even very convincing. Allowing your characters to make mistakes or be mislead can add a lot of interesting drama and makes your character more interesting and relatable.

3. Mary-sues and Gary-stus
Usually more seen in females, but mary-sues and gary-stus are when the character is perfect, they cannot do anything wrong, etc.
Though I actually haven't seen this much in chat when other people are roleplaying, but there was one roleplay I attempted to join that had this. "Leela" was the character of the owner of the plot. Reading under her info it said, "hot, beautiful, funny, kind, smart, perfect". I brushed it off as just some inexperienced roleplaying. At this time, I have already picked my character and noticed she had a crush. Naturally, I made my way to the boys side to see who was playing her crush. But there was one thing that caught my eye. Four out of the six guys had their crush labeled "Leela". This made me angry, and I left the RP faster than Usain Bolt running the 100-meter dash.

That's all I can think off the top of my head right now, but that's the basic of what annoys me about roleplaying in Minecraft.

To be honest I don't like rps where its people create your  personality/name/crush, I think it'd be better if you had complete control of your character, and it'd seem less like you're trying to control the others. Of course, you also have rps based off of shows, like Frozen rps or FNAF rps are a  common sight now, that makes sense, but if you add like more characters at least let the players choose their personalities and such..

Can we please
Have good rps
please

It changes. I mainly play on 2, but I have plots on both 1 and 3. (My plot on 3 is pretty close to spawn too. owo-b )
But I haven't played on it in forever.

Ahh right :)
I only ever go on creative 1, as that was the original creative server. I used to have a huge head shop there, but now I'm moving it.

Aaaaand that's why I don't roleplay. I used to, but I got so much BS like this that I stopped. Besides, Minecraft wasn't made for roleplays, go on some roleplay forum and have your fun there. Great blog, you earned a diamond, and a subscriber :)

I used to be a big roleplaying fanatic on an old website called Chickensmoothie (it's a pet adoptable site), but I haven't roleplayed on any kind of forums in over a year. CX But thanks! :)

the worst, lauren121902: *throws hard punch at hanna* (person playing hanna): *dodge*
Like every time I do a harmful action I have to say *throws hard punch at hanna no dodge or miss*
It is the WORST THING EVER.

The crush thing is bad too. I remember there were these two people who were doing a thing where they were sort of  dating in a role play and I was supposed to have a crush on the guy, I was eaves dropping and the girl was like "Lauren stop" I was like GRR

OMG I relate to this so much! I mean I've been on creative servers with people so desperate to role play they role play with themselves and I've seen so Many "perfect" characters. And then ... The people who don't even read the rules or the other peoples bios ... If youre in a survival mode role play with a person like that ... Run away.

I'd have to disagree. Going on a harry potter server and roleplaying as a student is amazing.

I'm talking like on creative servers, not actual roleplaying servers. I've never been on a roleplaying server, but I'm pretty sure it's a whole lot better on said server than on creative plots.

minecraft roleplay is brilliant if you know what your doing

the only thing i really agree with is the use of god moding but it is hard not to do it if you have only two people or if you introduce a new character and then decide that nobody wants to play that character

the best way to really get the experience of minecraft roleplay is either play with mods such as mo creatures or mods that add extra stuff to help get the feel of minecraft roleplay or get on a server pumped with roleplay plugins so you can physically act out your character instead of sitting talking

there is nothing wrong with being a perfect character..althrough it does take a little bit of the fun out of the game i have no problem with that

finally if nobody takes control of the roleplay it is a little hard for it to develop without a 'leader' and playing the role of "dungeon master" does get a little boring especially when your physically roleplaying in minecraft with mods which as i explained above.

overall roleplaying is one of the main reasons why i'm not bored of minecraft xD

(my character is always a sky pirate xD)
