Hello
Ever since I got into creative building and helping others in their creative process, I and many others, have run into the same walls with providing our opinions and feedback on other builders. Through this blog I hope to show you how to help other builders, and how to improve your own critiques.
The same situation that I run into all the time is:
Mod/Admin: I don't really like your build, this definitely won't get you a promotion.
New Builder: But whyyy? I worked for a BAGILLION hours on this! I hate this server! It sucks :(
What proceeds next is normally a long, frustrating process of the builder insulting mods, and in some cases, permanent ban.
How we can avoid this.
What I have been trying to incorporate in my critiques are 'ups and downs' of the build. Positive feedback can go a long way. If you don't like a build make suggestions of what you would've done, but don't sound superior and snobby, that will make them disregard your comments. The main reason many builders are unsatisfied with critiques is because we put no time into them, or care. Our laziness and carelessness can hurt the server and the builders' opinion towards building overall. The way I give critiques, is I state something positive and something that needs improvement about the build and give them some motivation. An Example:
Me: I would suggest using less ores and diamond blocks they normally aren't attractive. But I really like your interior design, I would, however, add more details and depth to the exterior.
New Builder: Thanks, I'll try to add some more!
This method normally will help the builder's confidence and overall attitude to you and the staff on the server. Plus you may get good results from them. Occasionally I do get a much better outcome than before, and you avoid less of the permanent bans of un-cooperative and frustrated builders. Taking a little bit of time will help the builder and probably your server too, no one likes to be brought down.
Critiques normally sound harsh and insulting, these are what we don't need. Saying 'it's bad' 'looks ugly' and other non-constructive responses won't help anyone (unless putting bad builders down is your thing).
Next time someone is asking you for a critique, be constructive! Help them out! You'll feel good, and they'll be encouraged to keep their build going and take your advice.
Thanks for reading! Check my projects! :3
