What is yellow?

Well. My first blog. This should be interesting. First off, I would like to say that, although I am indeed putting thought process into this, my point still may be very vague, and the article quite random. Perhaps there is no point, and I may just be giving you something for your mind to chew on. Secondly, although I love to write, this is my first blog, and I may be doing it all wrong. But it's 12:00 at night and I don't care to compare to better blogs.

So, let's start things off. You may be wondering, what in the heck is the title supposed to mean? Well, I'll tell you. It's a question I posed to myself while thinking up a hypothetical situation. We'll get to that in a second, but first, I must ask you to ask yourself, 'How do I perceive the world around me?' I do not mean this in the literal sense, as in, "With your eyes, of course." I mean this more in the way that, you personally may be recognizing your world completely differently than anyone around you. This, of course, is a confusing statement, to be sure. And so, I shall illustrate my meaning with the hypothetical situation.

There are two men in a room together. The room is sealed, no doors or windows, and no interaction with anyone else outside the room. One wall of this room is painted yellow, and the two men stand observing it's color. The first man remarks, simply, "This wall is yellow." Now, the second man has a precedent to follow. He too says, "Yes, the wall is yellow." The two agree, and the wall is yellow. Pretty boring, no? Well then prepare yourself. Let's change the scenario a bit, shall we?

The two men stand observing the wall. Nothing has changed about the room or the color of the wall. However, there is one small difference between the two men now. The second man is colorblind. So, the first man remarks, "This wall is yellow." However, this time around, the second man says, "No. This wall is blue." Now, I must ask you, reader, who is right? Take a moment to think about the given situation before you answer, and then continue reading. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you chose the first man in being correct. And if I were to ask why, you would most likely say something similar to; "Because the first man isn't colorblind." Yes, but here's the catch. The two of them are alone in a room. There is no human interaction between the two men and any outside source. Therefore, because neither of them can distinguish who is the colorblind one, and cannot conclude who is right. So now, both men are right.

There are two slightly different examples of one very similar scenario here. Both of them represent different ways in which I believe we can perceive the world around us. The first, using conventional logic, in which we accept what is around us for what it is. We agree with the precedents set for us, and continue observing them in the same fashion, day after day. The second is how I sometimes find myself viewing reality. I understand that the paradigms say that "The wall is yellow", and yet I still find myself wanting to challenge this, and say, "No, it is blue."

What is yellow? What is the standard? Pay attention, and always think, "Could this yellow be blue?" And know that no matter what color you see, you may be right.

If you made it to the end, then I'm proud of you. I know this sounds like the rantings of a man eccentric, but now you know how I think. Love it, hate it, it doesn't matter much to me, as long as I've gotten you to start thinking in a way you never thought of before. Post your thoughts below, if you made sense out of any of the above and still managed to come up with some.

This has been a blog with Cooper.

Quick update; thanks to jman, I learned that the technical term for what I'm trying to describe is known as "Qualia". Qualia, basically, is the kind of stuff that you just can't explain to another person (in this case, what the color Yellow actually looks like to you), and the inability to relay this information to someone else is known as the "Explanatory Gap". Just an interesting tidbit to further your thinking brains, courtesy of a VSauce video located in the comment section. But remember that I called dibs on this idea first! The VSauce video came AFTER this blog post! I feel smarticle :D

I love the concept, and you did it 2 months before the Vsauce video.

I can see what you mean, it's an interesting concept, because if the doctors say the colourblind people are colourblind, how do they know that the non-colourblind people are actually the colourblind one. Very mind bending. :)

I was about to say this, but in different words: What if colorblindness happens to 90% of the world's population, and the other 10% are the ones that we believe to be colorblind, but are actually seeing the world the way it is? The background of PMC might be pink and barely any of us would have realized it because we're too busy accusing perfectly normal people of being colorblind, when we are actually the weird ones. This is like Antichamber, but in words o.o

Well, I found a 6 month old blog, and I'm going to comment on it to be a cool guy.

What if you think about it like this...
Is my yellow your yellow? Do we see yellow the same way as each other? You are raised and told that the color you are looking at is "Yellow" but do we all see it the same way? I have actually spent time researching this, and there is no way to find this out at all, considering we can't crawl inside each other's heads.

Quite interesting. I've pondered the same thing, though with different 'colors'.

When the moon rises out from the ground and pours her grey light upon the ground, we see the flowers dim. When they dim like so, can one still call them by their common 'daytime' colors? Or have they become grey?

I'm for the later, as there's no such thing as a colored object. The color's attributed to the light. There are simply objects that absorb every color but one.

I had a teacher that briefly explained that concept to us, but it was a while back and we students were too young to understand it fully. It was part of a science lesson about light and colors, and we were learning about the spectrum of colors that can be seen by the eye and all that. Really is fascinating, isn't it?

Yeah, I know. This blog was written in a fit of divine guidance. And by that I mean it was late and I was thinking too hard. BUT, it still turned out alright.

This is definitely fun to think about.

As Albert Einstein once said:

A question that sometimes drives me hazy, am I or the others crazy?

I love that quote! Thanks for the read and diamond. I was worried nobody would understand it. That, or they'd just think, "Too long didn't read" due to the fact that I can't make paragraphs when posting with a smart phone.
