Prepare for a half-rant

Ok..... lately I've been hearing about people getting "noticed" or "popular" on planet minecraft. Some of these people are just being optimistic; they get a diamond and think that they are the best person on planet minecraft. I'll admit, when I started here, I was one of those people. I thought that levels mattered. They don't. Being a high level does NOT make anyone more popular than you.

But what Is "popular" on this site? Sure, the level system aids in judging how well someone has done in the past, and whether it is worth looking forward to other stuff they put out, but in the end, it boils down to people competing for a higher level, a pointless goal. If you upload 30 skins in a week and get to level 8, that's great. I would be happy as well, but that was probably mostly due to people who click on every skin on the list. If you can upload 30 skins in a week, you are probably not making a quality skin, and your experience is getting accumulated by views. However, in my mind, this is not going to make you "popular". This makes you able to crank out half-quality skins that people mindless click on. I'm sure some amazing people out there can make a ton of quality skins very quickly, as in once per day, but the majority of people will use skins they put about 10 minutes of work into. Not popular in this case; not many people are going to look for a while and appreciate the skin. Moral of this part of the story: cranking out content is not going to make you popular. You probably know what I'm going to say, but PUTTING OUT QUALITY CONTENT IS WHAT WOULD MAKE SOMEONE "popular". At least for me. I might loose a bit of flow in my writing here, my adobe updater is yelling at me.

This is what it boils down to for me. Quality, not quantity. I like to put out one quality project every two weeks or so(this is what happens on rare occasions, I've been slacking lately). Putting out a ton of stuff to simply level up is not going to make you popular. In fact, it will make you seem desperate. The level system is almost like drug addiction. Once you level up once, you never want to stop. Watching that little EXP bar move up is the most gratifying thing in the world, and I will admit, I love watching it crawl up as well. The level system infringes on goals though. If the goal was to make a quality project, plenty of times it will end up getting rushed during upload just to see the level bar go up a little. However, if you really want to play with the level system, take your time. Upload it with quality, and see how fast the level bar goes up. Getting simply "noticed" implies that you have gotten a few views from the project you uploaded in the past few minutes. Getting "popular" is taking your time with every project, and having the results pay off much more than with rushed content.

I'm drifting. Let me make my point and end this post. Getting "noticed" is fine for your first few uploads to the site. It is a good thing. Getting "noticed" after 10 projects is not really a good thing to be saying. If you are still only getting a few views or diamonds on an upload at this point, try spending a bit more time making the content more focused on quality. Take some screenshots. Edit them. Try new things. In the end, that is what people want to see. New things. If everything on this site was the same thing, it would have gotten boring AGES ago.

I'm drifting within a drift now, this is bad. Just a little more. So here is what "popular" is to me. Getting something on the popular reel is a start. Getting subscribers who actually check on your page periodicly. Getting to a higher level means nothing to popularity. Look at xyvlon. He was level 3, and the next day, he was level 20. He put out a quality project, with professional editing. I use the level jump to measure how much he was seen and appreciated during this time. In fact, that is the only way I use the level system. Judging quality of work.

So put out quality! Not quantity! Get "popular"! Not "noticed"!

One more thing. Don't feel sorry for yourself and pretend to beat up on your own projects to get attention. No one likes that. Just wanted to put that out there.

And for all of you who read this and understood my point,

Stay Saxxy

I'm glad somebody notices this. As far as exp goes, if somebody likes my stuff, wonderful, if they don't, that's okay too. And if I see that I leveled up, I give an unenthusiastic "that's nice" check my classes, the whole shabang, and upload whatever I finish during the day like I usually do.

Look on my new quality Survivor skin and no... I deleted the old one, in that was Survivor skin at least more popular. Look on my new Jakecreed and the old Jake skin. (Jakecreed wasnt so much more quality in) But it seems like my old skins getting more popular! Why? 8(

I think a peer-review voting system would work much better.

Must have 10 votes from PMC standard users, and 2 votes from PMC moderators to prevent pushing from fake accounts/friends.

This would stop 90% of the trash out there.

Nope. We get way too many new registered users per day for that to give time to these people to decide.
I see your point Saxxy, and if i would have the time at the moment, i would give you a bigger answer;
What I mean; A lot of guys uploading 'quality project' have LUCK. I will bet that not every popular project is 'quality'. They are XP-Raping like Eryax would say. And I will especiallly mention Xylvon. I watched xylvons rise on pmc carefully and yes nice projects and edits, but at the same time they are -first- people doing silly c**p and getting this rush and people doing an f** afford of work and seeing this reputation: zero.

But as you say, you are right, Especially 4 our team this article was quite interesing and helpful. Fititng to our thoughts. Thanks for this work.

Peace Out

Interesting rant. I see your point.

Still, are people really that addicted to the level-system? The only thing the level system is telling me, is how much this guy/girl have influenced the community on this webpage. It all comes down to posts/views/comments/downloads, but it never needs to be all of them. I'm just saying that even though someones level are high, it's still not a big sign saying "I'm awesome, creative and make good content, and people like me".

Take me for example: I'm level 41. It says "Master Enderdragon" on it, which kinda makes me seem obnoxious. Guess how many posts I've made? No, it's not 100. It's not 50. It's not 10 either. It's 2, and one of them hasn't really got that much attention either.

But this isn't visible under my name, is it? No. You have to view my page to see how many posts I've made. You can't estimate how much quality or more correctly: How requested my posts are, before knowing how many of them I've posted, and compare them to my level.

Also, I see you want to make people take more time with their projects, because this will increase the quality of their outcome. Well, using a lot of time on a project doesn't always make your content amazing and in high quality. It really depends on how the creator are using hes/hers time and how good he/her is on what ever he/her is doing.

There are also people that mentally can't use a lot of time on projects, but still want to be creative and share. Keeping the inspiration for a product over several days is hard for many. Me included. Loosing inspiration is always a problem, and getting it back is hard.

At last, "being popular" is like an extension for "being noticed". You can be both noticed and popular, but you can't just be popular. If you're popular. you're noticed. For example: Justin Bieber is both hated and loved. He is popular for some, and not so popular for others. Still, hes noticed by both the haters and the lovers.

My point with this way-to-long comment is: This is a problem you see everywhere. This a problem that have lasted for a long time. Maybe it doesn't seem like a problem for some, but if we think about the human race in general: producing the best content your mind is capable of producing, should be a goal for everyone, and this would quickly expand our race's knowledge. Sadly, most humans are not doing this, because it requires something we all probably need more of: patience and discipline.

Back to the point: You can't change this. This won't stop. What you might get out of this rant, is that maybe you have/will convince some creators out there to think about themselves and how they are producing content.

I enjoyed this. Although I'm not so certain that quality projects get the attention they deserve either. One could spend months on something and upload it here, if it doesn't have some trash in the title like Hunger Games nobody is ever going to know about it.

Most of the quality is gone, replaced by a few simple words in the project title to reel in the small minded; Hunger Games, Epic, Awesome, Huge. That's what it is all about now.

Whaha you must hate me then ;P
~I have most submissions on entire pmc xD
Reason for that is that I started off with a skinshop on the mcforums and at that time I made 5 - 10 skins a day
I only had pmc for the 'forum code' to send them to the people who requested them with a previewer
~When I stopped with that skin shop I started to make skins just for fun, that's when I got better at skinning and learnt new techniques -still learning-
Now I'm on the project to make skins for DoC -a roleplay server- which also causes me to upload alot of skins and then again -only for the people who requested-
I kinda have skins I upload just for the people who requested and I have skins I upload for my subs, better skins.
~Only the skins I make for my subs are for my level, I know the other skins won't get alot of views, diamonds etc. ;P

P.S. I disagree that the quality of a skin depends on how much time you put into it, when you have good techniques it is easy to make a good skin within 10 - 20 minutes ;3

The quality of a submission obviously has a lot to do with getting "popular" but there is also a bit of a luck factor in getting "noticed" first. For instance, I feel that I have put out some quality work in the past and yet it never gets that much recognition. Well put article though diamond for you.

Quality is very important. I didn't start uploading skins until i thought they were upload worthy, and in just two weeks I got 100 subs, off of like 6 skins. So making quality skins will get you noticed much quicker then spamming that skin stream.

I kinda see this site as a game you know, all the other games are pure BS xD I also love to see my exp bar growing up, but about the popularity thing, nah. being popular on this site means you've got a lot of luck. You need to get onto the popular page to get noticed, to get popular. But lots, lots of good work doesn't reach the popular page, so most of the skilled people don't become popular.
 • Saxxy
 • Level 32

 • May 11, 2012, 5:32 pm
Welll...... prepare for a long response dude.

Yes, I can see the site as a game XD. It is really kind of that for me. But it is not mostly luck.

If it was mostly luck, some of the better people would do the /roll command in chat and whoever got highest would get to the front page. But that isn't how it generaly works. What people look for (in projects at least) is what makes it to the front page. If you have a decent fanbase, you have an easier time. that takes some work to build up.

I think it is more quality than luck. And good quallity is really quite hard to achieve. It takes hours, maybe half a day of work total. And a lot of it. It has to be thought out, and planned.

Now I only have experience with projects. IDK how the rest of the site really is with the popular reel and stuff. But thank you for giving feedback! You yourself are quite popular on the site! I'm glad you took time out of your day to read this!
