Sophie woke up to the cheerful chirping of birds and the warm spring sunshine cascading through the window. She yawned and stretched, soaking up the rays. Her ears perked up as a fork scraped across a plate downstairs. The little dog leaped out of bed and gleefully scarfed down her breakfast of leftover cheesy potatoes.
"That was so yummy," Sophie sighed, still licking the sauce from her lips. "What should I do now?" she pondered. "Oh, I know, I'll play with PandaPanda!" Sophie's tail wagged, thinking fondly of her favorite stuffed animal. "Let's see, I was chewing on him in the hallway yesterday."
To her dismay, PandaPanda was not in the hallway. Sophie looked around, wondering where he might have gone. "I know it's around here somewhere." He wasn't in the bathroom, or under the bed, or behind the door. She dug through the basket of clean clothes, but he wasn't in there, either. "Maybe he rolled under the couch?"
All she found was a peice of kibble, and some dust bunnies. She was running out of ideas for places to search. "Did I leave him outside?" she wondered, heading towards the back door. "Hi Sophie!" Onyx exclaimed. "Hey Onyx, hey Raven," Sophie replied, without much enthusiasm. "Is something wrong?" Onyx asked with concern.
"I can't find PandaPanda anywhere. I've been looking all morning for him," she replied sadly. "Oh, we're great at finding things! Onyx and Raven are on the case!" With that, the two black labs raced out into the yard, sniffing high and low for a trace of the fluffy white bear.
Sophie watched from the deck as Onyx and Raven made a sweep of the yard. They disappeared into the shadows of the tall bushes. Moments later, there was a loud crash and the pair burst through the leaves, running at break-neck speed. "Did you find PandaPanda?" Sophie asked excitedly. "Uh, was that what we were looking for?" Raven said, panting furiously. "No, but we found this awesome stick! You can play with that instead!"
"I don't think that will work," said Sophie, looking at the log they were fighting over. "But thanks anyway." She couldn't help but to feel discouraged. "We went for a car ride the other day, maybe I left him there." She climbed up the giant steps, and looked all around the truck. "Still no sign of him," she sighed.
Sophie hopped out of the cab, and heard the clicking of hooves on the driveway. "Mama Deer, have you seen PandaPanda?" The doe chewed thoughtfully on a dried leaf. The fawn peaked out timidly from behind her. "No, I haven't seen it around here." She paused to find another crunchy leaf. "I noticed the cat chasing something this morning though, you could ask him."
Sophie looked around for Jzargo. "He is always lurking nearby," she thought. Then, she spotted him napping peacefully under a large oak tree. Sophie carefully approached the enormous black cat. "I know how mad he gets when I wake him up, but this is really important," she told herself, gathering courage.
"Hi Jzargo," she called. He opened one eye and glared at the little dog, "Ugh! What do you want?" Sophie took a step back from the menacing stare, "I was just wondering if you had seen PandaPanda." Jzargo's tail flicked with irritation, "No, I haven't seen that oversized furball. Now leave me alone, I am extremely busy," he said, stalking off and grumbling to himself.
Dejected, Sophie went back inside, sure she would never see PandaPanda again. "I looked everywhere for him," she whimpered. Sophie half heartedly pushed her kibble around the bowl, not feeling hungry at all. She was still suspicious of the cat, but couldn't prove anything. It seemed that all hope was lost.
The sun was starting to set. Sophie was ready to go to sleep, exhausted from her long day of searching. She jumped up into bed, and burrowed under the soft blankets. That's when she noticed a strange lump. "What's this?" she asked, moving the sheets aside with her tiny nose. "PandaPanda! You were here the whole time!" Sophie snuggled up with her favorite toy, and chewed lovingly on his ear. "I'll never lose you again," she promised, and dozed off into sweet dreams.
