I think the new Minecraft launcher is better for two reasons. 1. You can choose which version you want to play, and as someone who doesn't want to/ doesn't know how to download a .jar, this is really incredible. 2. FPS-wise I am getting about twice as much fps than with the old one. For example, with the old launcher I usually got 19-30 fps, and now with the new launcher, I usually 50-60 fps. Even on servers this does not change.( Incidentally I heard some unhappy players on my server that were saying it was terrible)
