Will Windows 10 kill Minecraft? Possibly…

Blog by: MrZybez

NOTE: This blog is about the possible monitization of minecraft through the terms of use by microsoft to remove any older versions of the game using java and forcing people to move to the C++ version where they have tighter control. This is not something that has happened, but that i could see happenening in the future. Aslo the many links are source links.

Hello Planet Minecraft. I’m here today to talk about something that we the Minecraft community should consider. Since Microsoft has purchased Mojang we haven’t seen too much happen. In fact less has happened since Microsoft has stepped in. There was an announcement a while ago for a Minecraft Story mode. With the new update to Minecraft and the addition of Duel wilding it got me thinking.

Mojang is owned by Microsoft. Minecraft is on many different plat forms. They have sort of confirmed that they will indeed update the PlayStation (SONY) versions of the game but on their own time. This could mean that there will be timed exclusivity for the Xbox version of Minecraft. Now this was no surprise what so ever. Microsoft bought Mojang for its fan base. Minecraft has one of the largest fan bases in the world. One of the largest reasons for this large player base of many ages is its customizability.

Minecraft has always been a game that has inspired. The base game is fun, but once you complete that, then you move to multiplayer. After you get bored of joining servers you want to make your own. After you’ve created your own server or two or seven you would decide to create mods. After creating a few mods that you’re like “Hey! Let’s open a forge server!” After running a forge server for a while you move on to other things within the Minecraft community, maybe helping someone else out with their projects. This game has this ability to be for all ages not because of its core game, but because of how much there is to do once the game is over.

This is where things get sad in my opinion. The Pocket edition, Xbox and PS editions of Minecraft are NOT using Java. Java is the game language Mojang used to create Minecraft. These other versions are using something else (C++). These other version you have to pay money for texture packs, skin packed and other “Custom” Stuff (Custom was said sarcastically). Microsoft has been pushing their windows 10 out and forcing it on everything like it’s a cheap CENSORED, offering it for free to anyone with Windows 7-8. In 2013 Microsoft added in the terms of service that they have the right to change their terms at will. Shortly after Windows was downloaded by millions of people these terms changed once again. They now say (I’m paraphrasing) “We have the right to look at, change, delete, update or remove any programs/Information owned by us or our partners if we see that it doesn’t meet our standards.

Let’s put this in prospective shall we? Minecraft has an awesome modding community that as it is now is doing all this for free, and extending this life of this game. There are thousands upon thousands of Minecraft servers out there being hosted for free and many that are paying server hosts who are making lots of money off Minecraft. There are many websites that are using copyrighted images owned by Microsoft that use Minecraft. If there is one thing I know Microsoft loves, it’s NOT you, it’s your money. Also with Windows 10 you will not have access to your game files. This is really important, because modding is near darn impossible without the original game files. So let me ask this, What is the best way to remove all ability to create mods, take down servers, and remove websites? Easy, Forcibility, legally, remove the files off anyone’s and everyone’s computers with Windows 10. That’s the power of the cloud baby.

Let’s be hypothetical here. Later down the road "IF" Minecraft servers, modders, and websites are taken down through windows 10, how much money would Microsoft make charging you for something that use to be free? How much would a PMC membership cost? Skin packs would be $2.99 and Texture Packs would be $5.99.

Let’s do Facts now.
  • Minecraft Realms is Server hosting provided by Microsoft.
  • The Minecraft Pocket Edition/Xbox Version of the game is confirmed to be the native Minecraft for Windows 10
  • They have the right to their properties, to remove, edit, or change
  • On Windows 10 you will not have access to your game files and they will be located on the cloud. (YAY! DRM for Minecraft!!! Good luck modding without the original game files!!!)
So in the end they have the ability to shut down everything Minecraft related whether it’s a server, website, mod, or an old version of the game. Whether they do this or not is up to them. I’m just stating what I see. Way to go Notch. :D

You can still download the Java version luckly. I have Windows 10 and tried the new "Windows 10 Minecraft" and it's pretty much garbage. I have yet to find a way to Mod or do anything useful with that version. It's a matter of time before microsoft tries to cut out the java based version to replace it with a more marketable model (the Windows 10 Minecraft version)

I'll never get windows 10 even when I buy my new computers I'll request windows 8. This is because I like not having the goverment know literatly everyhing about me. It comes with the entire package anywhere from face scanners to key loggers. Did I mention it saves what you paint in MS paint even if you don't? So if you are alright with some dude just popping in and watching you whenever they feel like have fun. I know windows 8 has its fair share of stuff inside but not nearly as much spyware as the new and "improved" windows 10.

There already monetizing on the realms crap :/

Like the xbox.... you can BUY Skin Packs "DLC' to improve your game.
Im understanding that the windows 10 version will operate A LOT like the XBOX version?
you have to purchase DLC ..maps, (made by the community for free) and Skins to install them into your game.

The Window 10 version does indead work exaccully like the Xbox Version. Hwoever at this point i have not seen any skin packs or mash up packs being sold, but since they are running the same software that wouldnt be out of the realm of possibilities.

I understand the ones that come with it now are free?

There was an article i was reading that talked about the coming DLC's and how much they would cost.

quoted from a microsoft employee) but.. :/ i cant find it now. If i come accross it again i'll definantly post it here for ya

Sounds good, But the point still stands. Minecraft for any PC should and has always had Free comunity created content, but the Window 10 version will not. Only Microsoft will be the ones dishing out content, which defeats the whole purpose of minecraft's original comunity model.

Look, don't mean to hate, but don't be some illuminati conspirist. I, personally, love the new design in Windows 10, the Xbox compatibility, and Minecraft Windows 10. When did Microsoft buy the company? And when did pocket edition update with custom skins? And get this: You don't have to buy the skins, don't you? Now, I can't explain why you have to purchase the skins from Xbox, but it's not necessary. It's not like you're playing Multiplayer or anything. And seriously: Who the HECK uses Minecraft Realms.

And they will do that... why? They're not stupid. They want money, but they know what to do.

As long as they continue to update the Java version (like they said they would), I think we'll be fine.
