Ok, so Windforge... again, this is my son-in-law convincing me to get a game (and so far, I've liked all the ones he suggested, so YAY >PureEvil< for liking the same games I do!)
Windforge is a bizarre combination of Terraria, Steampunk and zepplins. It's a 2D side-scroller where you mine, craft, build and follow an interesting story on a world called Cordeus. It's a really interesting world that is primarily made up of sky-islands adrift in a strange "sea" of air currents. The sky is populated with various flying creatures, including lovely sky-whales. The problem is that whale-oil is the only fuel that Cordeus uses, and the whales are going extinct. You are part of a rebel force that is looking for ancient artifacts of the Aetherkin, the original inhabitents of Cordeus, in hopes of finding a different energy solution. This search has made you the enemy of the SOC, the religious overclass of Cordeus.
You can build your own zepplins and fly them around and be a sky-pirate. You can own a whole fleet of zepplins. There are tons of sky islands to visit and mine, with abandoned buildings and temples to explore. You can go whale hunting yourself and make a fortune selling whale oil in ports. The game HAS a storyline, but you sure don't have to follow it if you don't want to.
If I have any complaints about Windforge, it is that it can't be played multiplayer. I'm not sure if there are any plans in the works to make it multiplayer, but it stands alone as a good solo game too. I enjoy the graphics and the Steampunk flavour.
Now, if you don't mind me, I'm off to build a giant sky-fortress of evil and fill it full of steam-powered gatling guns to fend off the forces of the SOC. Be nice to whales.
(Available on Steam for $14.95, or visit the official website at http://snowedin.ca/projects/windforge/)
