           > Your Image as an Owner <
Every server owner wants to run a successful server; be it factions or minigames.  That is a fact.  A big part of running a successful server is being well presented.   Though, not all owners know how they should present themselves.  And that, fellow users, is what we shall be discussing
today.  (Of course, it's all up to you if you want to take my advice or not)

                        > Appearance <

To begin, how about we have a little chat about skins.  Skins are meant to show who you are, and how you act.  If you are just an average player, then you have the luck of just picking whatever skin you desire.  However, owners are not just an average player.  Owners are meant to be respected, therefore you should pick a respectable skin.  For example:

YES:

NO:

Though skins might not be a big deal for some people, for others; skins comepletely reflect how someone might act.  IE: if you wear an immature skin, people might think you're immature.  And no one likes someone who is just immature all the time.

                          > Maturity <
Being mature is probably one of the hardest things on the planet, and being immature is probably one of the easiest.  I mean, who wouldn't chuckle if someone fell face first into poop, right? ... right?  Anyways, back on topic.  As a owner it is your job to be a role-model of sorts for your players.  If you swear like a sailor, then that will have a large impact on your players.  For example: players will swear, players will be offended, players will find you immature, and worst of all players will leave.  (This next tip focuses on a certain type of player.  Move to the next topic if you aren't too keen on forming a relationship with your community)  While it is very important to keep a mature and respectable appearance;  it certainly can't hurt to throw in a dirty joke every now and then or to joke around with your community.  However, be very discreet with your jokes, for too many jokes can lead your players to think that you are immature.

   > A Heart of Steel,
and a Heart of Gold <
Being nice to players is good, but never be too nice.  What I'm trying to say is that you should be kind to your players; just don't go around doing drop parties every five minutes.  Of course, your players will love you if you give them a ton of diamonds; however this ruins the point of the game.  The point of minecraft is to go around, mine, fight, craft, and build.  If you just shower your players with items, then they won't have a reason to play on your server, thus making them leave.  Also, don't be too strict, as you will be despised by your players, and that might also make them leave.

                        > Relations <
Now; for our second to final topic I shall be covering relations.  Relations are the type people you hang out with on your server; such as staff (another tip I forgot to mention in the topic above; never make a player one of your relations, as that shows bias towards that player).  Always make sure to have a mature staff.  If a player sees a staff member being a fool, he/she will associate you as being a fool aswell.  When recruiting staff, all you need to ask them is 3 things:

1.  How often will you contribute to the server?

2.  Will you show respect to the server?

3.  Are you mature enough to be staff on my server?

If your staff member fits this criteria, then they should serve your server wisely.

                       > Advertising
<
There are many good and legitimate ways to advertise.  Pay a website to put up ads, tell people about your server irl, make a forum post containing details about your un-doubtley amazing server.  Another great way to advertise is to make a trailer for your server and post it on youtube.  However, there are also bad, and flat out horrible ways to advertise.  Some examples of this are players joining other servers advertising their server, or when a blog post is made advertising a server.  Both of those advertising options are horrible, and will only attract trollers, griefers, spammers, and hackers.  Also, never say you will give away free staff positions on your server is someone joins, as you will only get the sort of people I listed above.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, just about finishes this blog.  Have a lovely evening.

NOTE: I covered another topic. Your welcome ;)

You should add another heading talking about how to respond to common questions from players.

Well, making a blog post to advertise is a good idea, you're skin doesn't affect anything, and the questions you ask your staff, they could lie for answers.

Sorry, I think I might have been unclear about the blog post; I meant that making a blog post on this site is a bad idea since it's againt the rules.

In my eyes, you don't want someone on your server that judges you by what you wear.

Great blog! When I used to have a server I would always greet new players in a professional way and the majority of them were nice back, some of them were rude or just logged out without a hello. I tend to use more of a casual skin (my skin is the Joker fron Batman Arkham Origins), but reading this I might use a more professional look for my skin. I do think I could improve on my maturity and no matter how much power I have that I should use it responsibly. I also would not accept "Hi Im from Planet Minecraft give me staff" comments. Instead I would say that you cant be staff and that you have to be handpicked by me to be staff. If they keep saying it I just in a calm tone that they have blown their chances of being staff by 100%.

This is what I would do as a server owner but everyone is different.

As an owner myself, I think this is pretty okay. Of course, there are many more points fo an Owner, but these are a few of the strong ones.

You may want to include:
-No Bias
-Treating/Dealing with Staff

Not having a power complex is usually a good point, I've seen way to many servers with that kind of owner.

Hm, elaborate a bit on what you mean?

It's a little bit like the old fashioned "the customer is always wrong" mentality but with more power abuse. Usually limited to the younger admins, but I've seen it in older, supposedly more mature ones.

Not sure if "power complex" is the right way to describe it, perhaps an innate desire to put everyone else in their nonexistent place might describe it better (tends to apply to older admins). Sometimes it's necessary to completely and utterly put a player down (server admin myself), but when you start doing it unnecessarily... Well, that's what I mean by power complex. Not even sure that's the right context of the word but I'll roll with it.

Fortunately with the proliferation of minecraft servers this trope is dying out fast, any server suffering this now never lasts long. I don't see it much, and the last few instances I've seen were isolated outbursts rather than a complete mentality.

Tl:dr Respect your players, even if they've just joined. Seems like it should be common sense but you'd be surprised.

Also just noticed this is sort of covered in the blog, in the "don't be a bundle of sticks to your players" section.

Yes! This is a definite thing that any owner should look for in their staff, or make sure to have themselves.

I mean, the occasional player comes along who is just there to cause problems and start things with just about anything and anyone, but on the other hand isn't quite worthy of a ban due to other factors. That's when I'd say it's fair to just ignore them, or hold your ground representing the server.
