I know, I know, I'm not the first one to come up with this on this site, nor will I be the last. However, I wanted to try and do it a little differently than renaming Item Frames in anvils. This time: By using Shears!
Notes
- Works in 1.16 and while not tested, should work in the latest Snapshots.
- Should totally work in Multiplayer!
- Datapack not appearing when adding it to a world? BE SURE TO EXTRACT THE FILE!
Send pics of any builds you guys do with this, and if there's any bugs/suggested features, be sure to comment that below too!

Mechanics
Simply place Shears in an Item Frame to "shear" away the frame's edges! After making the Item Frame invisible, you are free to remove the shears, fret not when the frame turns back to normal after that, because while there are no items in the
Invisible Frame, it'll reappear! That way, you won't end up with loose hidden frames around your base.
Want the Item Frame to work like normal after you've turned it invisible? Just remove it and replace it, and it'll be good as new!

If you ever want to remove the Datapack, be sure to hit the [Disable] button that appears when you do /reload. While there are no scoreboards in this pack, it's still nice to have an easy way to remove it when need be!

Advantages of this datapack
First of all. This is the ideal solution. And I shall take some time to expose here what makes this pack better compared to other solutions.Known installation issues
Now, some word on those people who could not make it work in the first place, like me.You MUST DECOMPRESS the zip folder. I do not really understand the reasons for this, but it is requiered to unzip the folder. I actually took the folder out and made the proper zip folder, as I do with other datapacks. But it was not working. It must be decompressed.
/reload is imperative! Then the message Invisible Item Frames Loaded! will appear. If you have clicked on the message [deactivate] by accident, simply reload and it will be there again.
Tested world:
I tested this in MC Java Version 1.16.1 along woth more than 20 other datapacks and an elaborated resourcepack. And it works smoothly!
Many thanks for sharing MisterSandman.
Be sure you:
- Extracted the Folder from inside the ZIP file into your Datapacks folder, rather than just drag-and-dropping it. When you do /reload in your world, a message should pop up reading Invisible Item Frames Loaded! If this doesn't happen, you probs did something wrong. If you DID do thisand you're still having issues, then:
- Try using the shears on the frame, remove it, then place a new item in. The item frame only goes invisible when items are inside of it!
If you're still running into issues after this, let me know.
