Beachunk is a datapack that forces chunks to always stay loaded around beacons. It works by having 9 emerald blocks under a beacon. If you see green particles around the beacon you know that it's working.

The amount of chunks loaded depends on the range of the beacon, the higher the beacon range, the more chunks will stay loaded!

level 1: 1x1 chunks
level 2: 3x3 chunks
level 3: 5x5 chunks
level 4: 7x7 chunks

The center chunk is always the one where the beacon is in.

Installation instructions:
  1. Download the datapack
  2. Place the zip file inside the datapacks folder of your world
  3. Restart the server or use /reload
  4. Enjoy!

Do they need to be emerald blocks (for the whole becon), or just the top blocks?

To expand on what Foxtey256 asked, I'm curious how this works because of my understanding of the difference between forced chunk loading (now possible via commands) and the crop tick cycle (which I understood are unrelated)?

Crops do not grow in forceloaded chunks unless a player is nearby. Crop growing (without the use of bonemeal) depends on chunk ticks.

If this datapack does get around that, how does it do so? Would it be possible to implement the same behaviour with, say, a custom block vs having to create a beaon?

It actually doesn't work with crops? I never tested this, but I just assumed this would work.

This datapack only force load chunks, no other tricks are done. Sorry :(

Just place emerald blocks as a beacon base and it will cause the chunks the beacon is in to stay loaded!
This means if you have a farm in that area and go thousands of blocks away, the crops will still grow! It's really helpful especially if you have a lot of farms.

Tip: with F3 + G you can see the chunk borders.
