Frozen Hell | When hell freezes over! A frozen world survival mode Minecraft Data Pack

Introduction:

This data pack was inspired by a peculiar event. When my friend told me, he'll do something for me he'd really not want to when hell freezes over. So, I made it freeze over, literally. Then I built a world around it to still make it playable. This one is different from Redgile's Winter Apocalypse and Crazy_Cherry_Jam's Eternal Winter data pack for mine seriously tries to kill you in a lot of ways, making survival way harder and giving a serious apocalypse, end of the world feeling, while still trying to give barely sufficient enough materials to complete the game. Let's see what's changed.
As of 1.0.2 Francielly was kind enough for letting me incorporate her Snowy++ data pack in mine for achieving constant snowfall which keeps accumulating snow layers. Huge thank you for it!

Features as of 1.19.4:
  • One edition
  • Each and every overworld biome generates now with their respective frozen, desolate, snowy variants that were designed specifically for this data pack
  • Vegetation and animal life is mostly dead/gone as usual
  • It's always snowing and it's always a dark thunderstorm so hostiles spawn 0-24
  • The underground lush caves, dripstone caves and deep dark biomes are untouched so your best bet to get renewable resources is to move underground into a lush cave
  • Surface azalea trees were removed for it'd be way too easy to find renewable sources this way
  • To make the gameplay more enjoyable it's recommended to use my Learn from Your Deeds! and Backwards Crafting data packs as well!

Features as of 1.19:
  • You can craft ice to packed ice to blue ice and vice versa! It's a great deal of help for building material.
  • Since 1.19 mobs only can spawn in absolute darkness, which means even if you build all of your surroundings from pure, weak, crispy ice and use like redstone torches or soul torches, hostile mobs still cannot spawn. It's very helpful.
  • Deep dark added
  • Lush caves and dripstone caves are quite desolate, don't hope for an easily living
  • Killing the warden has 20% chance to drop any of the growable materials like saplings and crops so it's worthwhile if you don't want to butcher several hundreds of undead to get the same materials or run from village to village for them
  • Music resource pack updated and expanded
  • Only snowy and frozen biomes generate now with the exception of deep dark, lush caves, dripstone caves

Features as of 1.18:
  • One edition
  • The overworld is frozen
  • Some cold biomes were removed with update 1.18
  • Some new biomes were added
  • Resources are very scarce
  • Almost everything is covered in ice and snow
  • No animals, villagers and pillagers can exists in these cold environments above ground. They either died or turned to zombies.
  • Plant life is mostly dead underwater too, however fish and squids are still alive beneath the ice and they can drop kelp, which the player can cultivate to a viable food source by building kelp farms. Perhaps easier than killing 120 zombies for a wheat seed
  • Undead and otherworldly mobs can withstand the cold such as skeletons, strays, zombies, zombie villagers and endermen
  • The villages are rundown and uninhabited.
  • Trees are petrified. They're useless. One must be resourceful with wood for a good while and your best bet is to disassemble shipwrecks and village remains
  • Igloos are very important. They're the only source of living beings for deep down in the depths they could still survive, imprisoned, waiting for someone to rescue them
  • Trying to survive, the last of the villagers have brought seeds of all sorts and some food with themselves before dying miserably to the cold
  • Lava lakes are frozen to obsidian
  • As a small help ice blocks can be mined without silk touch
  • Unique music resource pack to make the world feel more desolate and uncaring. You can download it from CurseForge as well.

Features up to Minecraft version 1.17.1:

Two editions

Two versions

The day broke. The sun won't come up the horizon and barely shines anymore. In (the recommended) 3in1 edition sun isn't even visible. It's gone...

3in1 (recommended) edition freezes all dimensions from the Nether, through the overworld to the end

Basic edition only freezes the overworld

Always Dark (recommended) version obviously doesn't have daylight at all and pretty much like the end

The normal version has the daylight cycle frozen. The sun won't come up higher, it won't leave the horizon and just barely peeks over it to see the last survivors struggling to stay alive

Resources are very scarce

Almost everything is covered in ice and snow

No animals, villagers and pillagers can exists in these cold environments above ground. They either died or turned to zombies.

Plant life is mostly dead underwater too, however fish and squids are still alive beneath the ice and they can drop kelp, which the player can cultivate to a viable food source by building kelp farms. Perhaps easier than killing 120 zombies for a wheat seed

Undead and otherworldly mobs can withstand the cold such as skeletons, strays, zombies, zombie villagers and endermen

The villages are rundown and uninhabited.

50% of the villages naturally generate as ghost/zombie villages (only 1.0.0 versions)

All the artificial heat/light sources are depleted by the neglection. No torches or lanterns in villages

No plant can stay alive without care in this freezing cold. No crops grow in villages

Plant life is also dead. Flowers withered long ago and grass can't grow.

Trees are petrified. They're useless. One must be resourceful with wood for a good while and your best bet is to disassemble shipwrecks and village remains

Igloos are very important. They're the only source of living beings for deep down in the depths they could still survive, imprisoned, waiting for someone to rescue them

The cold seeped itself through the dimension portals, rendering other worlds frozen too

One can see the last flames of the nether go out if one's watchful enough

Crimson and warped forests petrified as well. Only the shroomlight pieces could muster enough heat to stay in their respective form

Striders and ghasts are extinct. Without heat sources they had no future

Zombie pigmen care not for the freezing cold for they're undead

Piglins and hoglins seek their survival by trying to eat one another. This hasn't changed much and in the heat of the battle they care not for their dying, freezing world

For crimson/warped stems and mushrooms are dead, piglins have stored the last pieces for though times. You can rarely find crimson/warped nylium and shrooms as loot from these beasts

The end hasn't changed much for endermenm shulkers and the dragon are not from this world. They need no sustenance thus they keep existing in their eternal forms. until the player comes and slays them

Trying to survive, the last of the villagers have brought seeds of all sorts and some food with themselves before dying miserably to the cold

One can only obtain the rare endgame netherite scraps if they search bastion remnants thoroughly

Lava lakes are frozen to obsidian

Nether fortresses are untouched mostly since they're the only places where blazes can spawn

As a small help ice blocks can be mined without silk touch

Unique music resource pack to make the world feel more desolate and uncaring.

Pretty much that's all! Good luck surviving! Try to... y'know. Enjoy yourselves :) It's just a game. If you have any suggestions or encountered a big feel free to post it in a commend down below and we'll put our heads together to make it work.

hey, we are having issue using this data pack... the nether dimension dont generate as frozen.... we tried for 1.18.. notice you actually dont mention a frozen hell in 1.18... so we looked up for the 1.17.1... and the file does not exist .. we took a 1.16.5 then.. and it broke our server....

I've not tried it on servers so I cannot comment on that. But 1.16.5 worked fine for me on 1.16.5. Since 1.17-18 the world generation changed so drastically that you cannot modify surface generator the way you could before so I cannot just tell the world to generate snow and ice all over the nether biomes. To do so I'd need to replace the nether biomes with frozen or snowy biomes which would of course break the regular gameplay and progression. I've to come up with something creative to fix this stuff and still make the hell frozen. Until then only the overworld will be cold as dead.

You should repost it for the competition.

I've also played with the thought but meh... It doesn't seem fair. While it does fit exactly the theme I nearly worked for a year on it while 99% of the users who submitted their entries have not on their own. Feels kind of like... cheating? Especially reposting specifically just for an event. If I'm correct even the entry rules said so not to do that. But fear not, I've thought about it.

It seems that this datapack no longer extracts properly, which is quite depressing

No. I just tried with 1.16.5 and works just fine. Are you sure you didn't try installing it in 1.17.1?

Is there any way you could make a datapack that makes it so there are only cold and snowy biomes, like tundra, taiga and their variants? I would really love to see that happend! Either way this datapack is pretty amazing!

So what you seek is a world generator with only cold biomes present without any modifications to gameplay, right? If yes, I can do that. But right now my graphics card is dead and I don't have integrated gpu thus I cannot use my PC. But I'll see to it eventually.
