j4red's RPG Item Overhaul

Have you ever felt like vanilla Minecraft is lacking in terms of magic items?

Have you ever been frustrated with the process for installing mods while still being able to play with your friends?

Worry no more, because now this data pack is (almost) here!

What this entails:
This data pack is designed to add new RPG-type items into the game for the sole purpose of adding flavor and making the default game more interesting. This is also my first data pack, so it has been a great way for me to learn the ins and outs of the function system present in the game!

Currently, my system implements a fully fleshed-out mana and spell cooldown system using scoreboards and tick delays. The nicest part about this system as opposed to some others is that it runs entirely through the data pack system, and as such, requires no command blocks or prior setup. This also means that it should be compatible with any world using the same function syntax.

Check out the video demo for a live preview!

How it works:
All the spells in this pack are cast using retextured carrots on sticks. By using the CustomModelData NBT tag, I was able to create unique sprites and names for each item, and then test for the different NBT data in whatever item the player has selected to allow them to cast different spells.

Please note, this does mean that to view the items properly, the associated resource pack is REQUIRED.

I want to try it!
I'm so glad!! Just be aware, I don't think it's quiiiiite ready yet-- there's still some bugs I want to iron out before releasing it to everyone. But then again, this is my first data pack and I have no idea what I'm doing, so I'm putting it here anyway!

To install:
Since there's a lot going on in this pack, I figured it should be a manual install to make sure you know what you're doing. Once you're in the world that you want to install it in (and once the .zip file is in the datapacks directory), run these commands:

/function j4:logic/init
/scoreboard players set @a max_mana 100

And you should be set! To /give yourself some of the items you might want to play with, run

/function j4:items/list

I have an idea for something you should add:
I'd love to hear it! Leave a comment here or on the YouTube demo and I'll try to get back to you :) You can also reach out to me on Twitter @J4_3D and get in touch!

Again, this is my first data pack and post on PMC (despite having been on here since 2014 😅), so any tips or advice is greatly appreciated :)
