Magic Meter V3.1
For Minecraft 1.14.4 to 1.16.1!

The Magic Meter data pack adds a magic meter into your world. This magic meter doesn't do anything by itself, but can be used by you, the mapmaker, to do some pretty cool stuff! This pack features a displayed magic meter which indicates the amount of magic the player currently has. It is fully multiplayer compatible. The data pack also has a simple to use scoreboard value tracking magic on a player independent system, which allows mapmakers to detect individual magic levels for use for whatever they want magic used for.

So, how can I use this pack for my own map?

Install the pack into the world you are working on. Here are some tips on how to use this pack.

  • The scoreboard used by this pack is named "magic_meter".

  • Use a <selector> like this @s[scores={magic_meter=400..}] to check if the player has a specific amount of magic.

  • Remove score from the player using a command like:
    scoreboard players remove @s[scores={magic_meter=400..}] magic_meter 400

  • To determine if the player doesn't have enough magic, use a selector like this (with 1 less than the desired magic count)
    @s[scores={magic_meter=..399}

To install, follow the instructions contained in the "instructions.txt" file included in the download. If you are still having issues installing or want help knowing how to do something with the pack, ask for help on our discord.

Fully Multiplayer compatible!

Is there a way to move the meter lower or higher? It's default placement sits directly over top of my thirst meter from another mod I have installed (Basic Thirst).

Also, what other mods are compatible with this one, and actually use the Magic Meter?

Unfortunately, Minecraft doesn't have many options for displaying stuff, so I imagine that both packs are using the same text location (action bar). However, we had settings build into the pack in game. (type /reload and press on the [settings] button) that allow the display of the magic meter to be disabled.

Currently, the packs that are compatible are only packs made by us.

Specifically,

Magical Bows

Magical Rods

and Magical Rings.

I guess I could try disabling the meter, but seeing the bar is half the fun. One of the mods I use is "Batty’s Coordinates Plus", which allows you to display game information in the four corners of the screen (and I think the middle-top); couldn't you utilize those areas for the meter, or do those areas not display bar animations well?

I figured those other 3 mods might use the magic meter, but they didn't seem to mention it anywhere on their pages, so I wasn't sure and didn't try them. I guess I'll poke around with all of this later, and see which action bar more fun for me.

Yeah, the magic meter is a datapack, so it has a lot more limitations than mods do, so we don't have the ability to use those areas.

What are the advantages to using Datapacks over Mods? Access to Resource Packs or easier to program?

Easier to program and are technically still vanilla (as they are programmed in game). You don't need any mod program like forge or fabric. Also, when installed on a server, players joining do not need to download the mod/datapack, making them super great for servers.

Normally servers that run mods on them are never really played on because it is really annoying to make sure everyone has the correct versions of mods and loaders and stuff. However, datapacks are super popular on servers right now.

I mean, it'd be cool if it actually came with stuff, but still is pretty cool.

Yeah, it could be somewhat useful for map makers. We have a couple of data packs that do use this magic meter though. You might find them more interesting.
