    Overview

This datapack utilises the new biome and dimension settings in the latest snapshot to recreate classic minecraft terrain generation as accurately as possible, featuring every original biome including the shrublands and the seasonal forest/rainforest, classic sand and gravel beaches and almost 1:1 accurate terrain generation to pre-beta 1.8 world.

Note: due to changes in the way terrain is handled in later versions, terrain is not 1:1 how it was in beta.1.7.3 and below, however I tried to get it as close as I could so it should hopefully be similarly nostalgic :)

    Features

    Old biomes return

    A classic shrublands
Classic biomes have been accurately reimplemented. The biomes included are forests, seasonal forests, rainforests, plains, shrublands, savannahs, deserts, taigas and tundras. Each one made to generate accurately to their original counterpart.

    Gravel and sand beaches
    Classic style beaches
The clean looking original beaches have been re-implemented and work almost exactly like they did in the original versions.

Full height variation across all biomes

One of the best aspects of classic terrain generation was biome could spawn at any height, leading to crazy cliff faces and mountain ranges that spanned hundreds of blocks and transitioned seamlessly without ugly borders or rivers between them. This has been reimplemented and each biome can now generate at anywhere between sea level and 128 blocks high.

    To install/use

    1. Download the attached .zip file and extract it (IMPORTANT).

    3. Drag the 'neo-beta-pack' folder contained inside the folder you extracted into Minecraft.
    4. Click on the datapack icon to move it over to the 'selected' tab
Click done then click create new world.

    Notes

Pack is currently unfinished as are Minecraft's custom dimension settings so expect things to change come later versions and snapshots. Feedback and suggestions for new features are welcome as well as bug reports. Thanks and enjoy! :)

Hi, I used the Glacier seed to get that classic mountain, but my world looks nothing like the screenshot in the above example :(

did you use a datapack generator (like misode) to make this? or you did it all by hand?

Made it by hand following slicedlime's vanilla datapack example files in his github. If you look at his youtube channel he also has some tutorials that may help you out

I checked out the latest V1.5 (24/01/2021) update you released and I have to say, I'm not at all happy about the change of noise. While I do agree that there should be more bodies of water in the terrain, I'd rather have the noise that is more faithful to actual beta terrain (kind of objectively, since glacier looks pretty close to the original).

Also, I noticed that ravines generate in the beta terrain, I don't think that's too good either but it's just a minor issue compared to the noise thing.

Either way, I'm glad you're going to work on this great data pack again, thank you very much for creating it!

Thanks for the feedback! The idea behind the noise changes was that despite some of the seeds looking similar, I didn't feel like the original noise felt beta enough, the height variation was way too dramatic and there wasn't enough flat land and ocean, but if people really don't like it then I can change it back, no problem.

Truth be told, the seeds are never going to be *exactly* the same due to how the modern game handles generation at a fundemental level. If you want 100% accurate beta terrain, mods do a better job of that than a datapack ever will. I more wanted to get the feeling of beta in vanilla than having it look exact so i guess that was my mindset with the noise changes.

What I may do is bring back the old noise generation and include the new one as a seperate dimension for those who want more even terrain. (Neo-Beta Plus has the new noise generation too so I guess there's that. Also ravines spawning is a bug lol, I'll fix it today. Cheers again!

First of all, thank you very much for taking my feedback into account. I'd just like to add that I think the noise from V1.5 fits perfectly in Neo-Beta Plus and it should remain in that data-pack, it does indeed capture the general essence of the beta noise, as you said. I do feel you could maybe mess around with it a little further to slightly increase the height of hills (but really, very slightly, not much at all, it's nearly perfect). Either way, you're right in that the accuracy of mods will probably stay superior to that of a datapack but I highly appreciate the change you made - keeping the old noise; this amalgam of current biome distribution + old, nearly accurate noise creates an interesting look and feel by itself, if that makes any sense. It's very unique and I like that a lot.
